Mary Anne Evans was born in 1819. Her Father did not consider her a great beauty and thought her chances of marriage were slim. He therefore invested in her education and by the time she was 16 she had boarded at several schools acquiring that good education. With the death of her mother in 1835 she returned home to keep house for her father and siblings. By 1850 she had moved to London to work at the Westminster Review where she published many articles and essays. The following year Mary Anne or Marian, as she liked to be called, had met George Henry Lewes, and in 1854 they moved in together; a somewhat scandalous situation as he was already married albeit with complications. Her view on literature had taken some time to coalesce but with the publication of parts of "Scenes From A Clerical Life" in 1858 she knew she wanted to be a novelist and as her 1856 titled essay "Silly Novels by Lady Novelists" stated not a 'silly woman's one at that'. Under the pseudonym of George Eliot that we know so well Adam Bede was published in 1859 followed by the other great novels of English literature Mill On The Floss, Silas Marner and Middlemarch. However her works as a poet are almost unknown. Here we republish her epic The Spanish Gypsy. It is a work worthy of her name.

Mary Anne Evans (22 November 1819 - 22 December 1880; alternatively "Mary Ann" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871-72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women only writing lighthearted romances. Harold Transome gains the support of his Tory uncle, the Rector of Little Treby, and enlists the help of his family lawyer, Matthew Jermyn, as an electioneering agent. Much of his electioneering is focused in Treby Magna. In this village resides Felix Holt, who has recently returned from extensive travels in Glasgow to live with his mother. He meets with Rev. Rufus Lyon, a Dissenting minister in Treby Magna, and his stepdaughter, Esther. Felix and Mr. Lyon become ready friends, but he appears to treat Esther with condescension. Felix and Rev. Lyon both appear aligned to the Radical cause.

Scenes of Clerical Life is the title under which George Eliot's first published work of fiction, a collection of three short stories, was released in book form; it was the first of her works to be released under her famous pseudonym.The stories take place in and around the fictional town of Milby in the English Midlands. When Scenes of Clerical Life was published anonymously in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in 1857, it was immediately recognized, as 'the production of a peculiar and remarkable writer'. The first readers, including Dickens and Thackeray, were struck by its humorous irony, the truthfulness of its presentation of the lives of ordinary men and women, and its compassionate acceptance of human weakness.
