"What do you say, King, railroad smash-up or shipwreck?" "I say shipwreck, with an awfully desert island." "I say shipwreck, too," said Kitty, "but I don't want to swim ashore." "All right," agreed Marjorie, "shipwreck, then. I'll get the cocoanuts." "Me, too," chimed in Rosy Posy. "Me tumble in the wet water, too!" The speakers in this somewhat enigmatical conversation were the four Maynard children, and they were deciding on their morning's occupation. It was a gorgeous day in early September. The air, without being too cool, was just crisp enough to make one feel energetic, though indeed no special atmospheric conditions were required to make the four Maynards feel energetic. That was their normal state, and if they were specially gay and lively this morning, it was not because of the brisk, breezy day, but because they were reunited after their summer's separation.

"Marjorie Maynard's May Came on a beautiful day; And Marjorie's Maytime Is Marjorie's playtime; And that's what I sing and I say! Hooray! Yes, that's what I sing and I say!" Marjorie was coming downstairs in her own sweet way, which was accomplished by putting her two feet close together, and jumping two steps at a time. It didn't expedite her descent at all, but it was delightfully noisy, and therefore agreeable from Marjorie's point of view. The May-day was undeniably beautiful. It was warm enough to have doors and windows flung open, and the whole house was full of May that had swarmed in from out of doors.

According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), it was around 1910 that she heard one of Anna Katherine Green's mystery novels being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unravelling of the puzzle. From that point onward she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among the most famous of her mystery novels were the Fleming Stone Detective Stories whic

"A bit thick, I call it," Pollard looked round the group; "here's Mellen been dead six weeks now, and the mystery of his taking-off still unsolved." "And always will be," Doctor Davenport nodded. "Mighty few murders are brought home to the villains who commit them." "Oh, I don't know," drawled Phil Barry, an artist, whose dress and demeanor coincided with the popular idea of his class. "I've no head for statistics," he went on, idly drawing caricatures on the margin of his evening paper as he talked, "but I think they say that only one-tenth of one per cent, of the murderers in this great and glorious country of ours are ever discovered." "Your head for statistics is defective, as you admit," Doctor Davenport said, his tone scornful; "but percentages mean little in these matters. The greater part of the murders committed are not brought prominently before public notice. It's only when the victim is rich or influential, or the circumstances of some especial interest that a murder occupies the front pages of the newspapers."

"Well, go to church then, and I hope to goodness you'll come back in a more spiritual frame of mind! Though how you can feel spiritual in that flibbertigibbet dress is more than I know! An actress, indeed! No mummers' masks have ever blotted the scutcheon of my family tree. The Clydes were decent, God-fearing people, and I don't propose, Miss, that you shall disgrace the name." Ursula Pell shook her good-looking gray head and glowered at her pretty niece, who was getting into a comfortable though not elaborate motor car. "I know you didn't propose it, Aunt Ursula," returned the smiling girl, "I thought up the scheme myself, and I decline to let you have credit of its origin." "Discredit, you mean," and Mrs. Pell sniffed haughtily. "Here's some money for the contribution plate. Iris; see that you put it in, and don't appropriate it yourself."

"What a gorgeous day for a sleigh-ride! Did you ever see such sunny, twinkling snow, and such crisp, crackly air? It fairly snaps off as you breathe it!" Betty McGuire stood on the steps of the veranda as she spoke. Her mother, in the doorway, was smiling down at her, and her pony, Dixie, was jingling his bells and pawing at the snow and ice in the driveway below. It was the first trial of the pretty new cutter, and the joyous excitement of the occasion made Betty's cheeks as red as her scarlet tam-o'-shanter cap, or her red cloth coat with its high fur collar. Betty drew on her driving-gloves, still talking to her mother. "Isn't it a darling sleigh, Mother? Did you ever see such a pretty one? And Dixie is so proud of it." "It's a beauty, Betty. I know you'll enjoy it. Are you taking Tilly for a ride?" "No; I'm going for May Fordham to-day. We're planning for the party, you know. I'll take Tilly some other day." "Very well; be home by sundown, won't you?" "Yes; or very soon after. All right, Pete." The face of the big Irishman beamed with pleasure as he assisted Betty into the new sleigh and tucked the fur robe round her. "'Tis a foine turnout, Miss Betty," he said; "an' mosht becomin' to Dixie, -the proud little baste!" "He is proud of it," agreed Betty, as she gathered up the lines. "He's just vain enough to love those silver bells jingling about him. Good-by, Mother." "Good-by, darling," said Mrs. McGuire, and after watching Betty disappear down the winding drive, she returned to the house. Denniston Hall, though a beautiful summer place, was equally attractive in winter. Then the wide front veranda was inclosed with glass, and, heated by an arrangement of steam-pipes, made a delightful sun-parlor. The house was of the old-fashioned type that has two front doors opening into two large halls.
