Grace had it tough growing up. Child of an abusive mother, she learned to be a secret-keeper, holding close the horrors of her childhood and what she had to do to survive. Her daughters, Martha and Lavender, could only puzzle over the mysteries they uncovered when they cleared out their mother's house after her death. It was too late to ask her about the ways in which their own lives were shaped by her experiences.
