It takes Zheng Jinhua, a rural woman in Fujian and eastern Fujian, as the main line. It tells about her experiences when she was young, after marriage and "working in the city," and describes her tragic childhood, humiliating youth, complex marriage, and emotional life. At the same time, it depicts the fate of 12 rural women. The novel begins with the news of Zheng Fangmei's death, which leads to the memories of Zheng Jinhua's childhood and youth stories and the process of struggling for family life in adulthood. The book describes her emotional entanglement with her lover Chen Yuejin, her husband, Huang Biaofu, her little partner Zheng Bin and her hometown Huang Jianfeng.
