Beskrivelse af Emancipation
Emancipation is a novel written by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, first published in 1899. The story is set in the small town of La Chance, where a young woman named Lois Barclay has just inherited her father's estate. Lois is determined to use her newfound wealth to break free from the constraints of her traditional upbringing and pursue her own desires. However, her plans are met with resistance from the conservative townspeople, who disapprove of her independent spirit and unconventional behavior. As Lois struggles to assert her independence, she finds herself caught in a web of social expectations and familial obligations. The novel explores themes of gender roles, societal norms, and the struggle for individual freedom in a time when women were expected to conform to strict standards of behavior. It also offers a vivid portrayal of small-town life in the late 19th century, with its gossip, rivalries, and petty intrigues. Overall, Emancipation is a compelling and thought-provoking work of fiction that offers a window into the challenges faced by women in an era of social change.Esther was firm after a curious fashion. She never ordered, but her attitude was in itself equivalent to a whole broadside of orders. She never raised her voice, she often did not express a wish, but her silence held the force of ultimate command. Her aged father, retaining, as he still did in very high measure, the fire of youth, was no match for her. His rebellious desires, his impatience for his own way, were blunted before her as before a porcelain wall of purest, impenetrable femininity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
