Beskrivelse af Eight Books of Caesar's Gallic War
The Eight Books of Caesar's Gallic War is a historical account of Julius Caesar's campaigns in Gaul, written by William Rainey Harper. The book is divided into eight chapters, each covering a different year of Caesar's conquest of Gaul. The narrative follows Caesar's military campaigns, including his battles with the Gauls and his eventual victory over them. The book provides a detailed account of the political and military landscape of Gaul during Caesar's time, including the different tribes and their alliances. It also explores the motivations and strategies of both Caesar and the Gauls, as well as the tactics and weapons used in battle. Throughout the book, Harper offers his own commentary and analysis of Caesar's actions, providing a deeper understanding of the historical context and significance of the Gallic War. The Eight Books of Caesar's Gallic War is a comprehensive and engaging account of one of the most significant military campaigns in ancient history.1891. The authors write in the preface that: In this volume the student is permitted to compare the Latinity of the eighth book, which was written by Hirtius, with that of the seven which precede. No Latin author repays the careful study of advanced Latin scholarship more satisfactorily than Caesar, and for this reason it is a misfortune, perhaps, that the Commentaries are relegated to the preparatory school. On the other hand, in no writer are the great principles of the language so constantly reviewed, thus forming a sure foundation for classical scholarship.
