"What comes after 'hi'? This is the question that goes through the mind of kids with autism. Everyone experiences happiness, sorrow, anger, fear, loneliness -- including kids on the spectrum, but they often sound very different. They have issues with confidence and don't know what comes after 'hi,' which makes it very difficult for them to succeed in social situations. In the 1990s, autism wasn't widely talked about, and 'networking' didn't exist. Eric and I were literally on our own. I'd start every morning believing that today was the day Marston was going to look back into my eyes, reach for me, smile for the first time, and walk -- and he'd say 'Mama.'
