Beskrivelse af Devil's Dictionary
The Devil's Dictionary is a satirical lexicon written by American journalist and author Ambrose Bierce. Originally published in 1906, the book is a collection of humorous and often irreverent definitions of common words and phrases, presented in the style of a traditional dictionary. Bierce's definitions are often biting and cynical, skewering the hypocrisy and absurdity of human behavior and society. The entries range from the mundane to the philosophical, with topics including politics, religion, and human nature. The Devil's Dictionary has been praised for its wit and insight, and remains a classic work of American satire.1941. The most famous dictionary after the OED and Webster's. The renowned author and journalist provides hilariously witty and wise definitions for common words in our language. For example: Abdication - an act whereby a sovereign attests his sense of the high temperature of the throne; Abrupt - sudden, without ceremony, like the arrival of a cannon-shot and the departure of the soldier whose interests are most affected by it. Dr. Samuel Johnson beautifully said of another author's ideas that they were concatenated without abruption. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
