Derrida, Supplements

Bag om Derrida, Supplements

"Nancy's text fascinates because it is not simply an analysis, a text written on or about Derrida, but also an act of memory, a testimonial to a life lived."--Marc Redfield, Brown University "Derrida, Supplements provides 'new access' not only to the work of Jacques Derrida but also to what deconstruction will have meant to Jean-Luc Nancy, that is, to one of the twentieth century's great thinkers of politics, of plurality, and of the community."--Elizabeth Rottenberg, DePaul University When Jean-Luc Nancy first encountered the work of Jacques Derrida in the 1960s, he knew he was hearing something new, a voice genuinely of its time. Thinking with and against each other over the course of their long friendship, the two thinkers reshaped the European intellectual landscape. Nancy's writings on Derrida, collected in this volume, reflect on the elements of their shared concerns with politics, the arts, religion, the fate of deconstruction and the future of sense. Rather than studies, commentaries, or interpretations of Derrida's thought, they are responses to his presence--not exactly a presence to self, but a presence in the world. Jean-Luc Nancy (1940-2021) was Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the Université Marc Bloch, Strasbourg. His wide-ranging thought runs through many books, including Being Singular Plural, The Ground of the Image, Corpus, The Disavowed Community, and Sexistence. His "The Intruder" was adapted into a film by Claire Denis. Anne O'Byrne is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Stony Brook University, SUNY. She is the author of Natality and Finitude and The Genocide Paradox: Democracy and Generational Time.
