Beskrivelse af Dame Care
Dame Care is a novel by Hermann Sudermann, originally published in German in 1905 under the title Frau Sorge. The book follows the life of a young man named Johannes Pinneberg, who is struggling to make ends meet in early 20th century Berlin. He is married to his sweetheart, Lene, and they have a young child together. However, their financial situation is precarious, and they are constantly worried about how they will pay their bills and provide for their family. The novel explores themes of poverty, class struggle, and the role of women in society. Dame Care, or Frau Sorge in the original German, is a personification of the social welfare system. She is portrayed as a maternal figure who cares for the poor and needy, but also has a controlling and suffocating presence. Through the character of Pinneberg, Sudermann examines the tension between individual freedom and social responsibility. The book was controversial when it was first published, as it challenged the prevailing ideas about gender roles and the role of the state in providing for its citizens. It is considered one of Sudermann's most important works, and has been translated into multiple languages. Dame Care remains a powerful commentary on the human condition and the struggle for survival in a rapidly changing world.1891. Sudermann, one of the leading writers of the German naturalist movement, achieved popularity through his psychological novel Dame Care. The book begins: Just when Meyerhofer's estate was to be sold by auction, his third son Paul was born. That was a hard time indeed. Frau Elsbeth, with her haggard face and melancholy smile, lay in her big four-post bed, with the cradle of the newborn child near her, and listened to every noise that reached her in her sad sickroom from the yard and house.
