Beskrivelse af An Unknown Country (1887)
An Unknown Country is a novel written by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik and published in 1887. The story follows the life of a young woman named Winifred, who is raised in poverty and struggles to make a living for herself. She is eventually taken in by a wealthy family, the Vanes, who offer her a job as a governess for their children. As Winifred becomes more involved with the Vane family, she begins to uncover secrets about their past and their relationships with one another. She also develops a close friendship with the eldest son, Stephen, which eventually leads to a romantic relationship. However, their relationship is complicated by the disapproval of Stephen's mother, who wants him to marry someone of his own social class. Throughout the novel, Winifred grapples with questions of identity and belonging, as she tries to navigate the unfamiliar world of the Vanes. She also confronts issues of class and social status, as she tries to reconcile her own humble origins with the privileged world of the Vanes. An Unknown Country is a poignant and insightful novel that explores themes of love, family, and social class. It offers a vivid portrait of Victorian society and the challenges faced by those who straddle the boundaries between different social classes. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
