Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (born January 27, 1832, died January 14, 1898), better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. He was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. It was on one expedition, on 4 July 1862, that Dodgson invented the outline of the story that eventually became his first and greatest commercial success. Having told the story and been begged by Alice Liddell to write it down, Dodgson eventually (after much delay) presented her with a handwritten, illustrated manuscript entitled Alice's Adventures Under Ground in November 1864. Sir John Tenniel (born February 28, 1820, died February 25, 1914). He was an English illustrator, graphic humourist and political cartoonist whose work was prominent during the second half of the 19th century. He was knighted by Victoria for his artistic achievements in 1893. He was the artist who illustrated Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
