Beskrivelse af A Visit To The United States In 1841
""A Visit to the United States in 1841"" is a travelogue written by Joseph Sturge, a British abolitionist and social reformer, about his journey to the United States in the early 19th century. The book provides a detailed account of Sturge's experiences as he traveled throughout the country, including his observations on the political, economic, and social conditions of the time.Sturge's book is particularly significant for its commentary on the issue of slavery in the United States. As an abolitionist, Sturge was deeply troubled by the institution of slavery, and he wrote extensively on the subject in his book. He describes his encounters with enslaved people and slave owners, and provides a vivid portrayal of the brutality and inhumanity of the system. In addition to his commentary on slavery, Sturge also provides insight into other aspects of American society. He writes about the state of education, religion, and politics in the United States, as well as his experiences with Native American communities.Overall, ""A Visit to the United States in 1841"" is a fascinating historical document that offers a unique perspective on American society during a pivotal moment in its history. Sturge's observations and insights continue to be studied and analyzed by scholars and historians today. One of my fellow passengers had recently been traveling in the southern States, and showed me a letter given to him as a curiosity at the post office at Charleston, South Carolina, which was addressed by a slave to her husband, but from insufficient direction had never reached its destination. It was to convey the tidings that she was about to be sold to the South, and begging him, in simple and affecting terms, to come and see her, as they would never meet again. Another of the passengers, who had also been a fellow voyager with my friend Joseph John Gurney, had recently travelled in Texas. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
