Beskrivelse af The Circle And The Sword (1911)
The Circle and the Sword is a historical fiction novel written by Joseph Mary Plunkett and published in 1911. The story is set in Ireland in the late 16th century, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and follows the lives of two young men, Hugh O'Neill and Red Hugh O'Donnell, who become leaders of the Irish resistance against English rule. The novel begins with the arrival of the English in Ireland and the subsequent oppression of the Irish people. Hugh O'Neill, a young Irish nobleman, is sent to England to be educated at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. While there, he becomes disillusioned with the English and returns to Ireland to lead the Irish resistance.Red Hugh O'Donnell, another young Irish nobleman, also becomes a leader of the resistance after his father is killed by the English. Together, Hugh and Red Hugh lead the Irish in a series of battles against the English, including the famous Battle of Kinsale. The novel also explores the personal lives of Hugh and Red Hugh, including their relationships with women and their struggles with loyalty and betrayal. Ultimately, the novel ends with the defeat of the Irish resistance and the flight of Hugh and Red Hugh to Spain. The Circle and the Sword is a gripping tale of love, loyalty, and war set against the backdrop of one of the most turbulent periods in Irish history. Plunkett's vivid descriptions and rich characters bring the story to life, making it a must-read for anyone interested in Irish history or historical fiction. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
