The girls had done their very best all school year and are being rewarded with the title of best fourth grade students. They even resort to asking the aunties, and even though they know the aunties will not tell them a thing, they remain hopeful to the last minute. The adventure as they call it turns out to be bigger, better and more usual than they could have even imagined. The lesson they learn this week is priceless.

The story takes place in and around the city of New Orleans. It has a heartbreaking beginning; a young child is snatched away from her family and given to a teenage boy as a gift. She lives under slave like conditions. When she becomes a teenager she is brutally beaten then forced out into a world she has no concept of. She finds a secluded little house in the woods, where she gives birth to her daughter, Lillian, when the baby starts talking; she names her mother, Mema. After living there for over four years, Mema becomes fearful that someone would steal her baby and use her, as a gift, so she moves to the city of New Orleans. Mema's earlier suffering brought about many types of mental issues, and unfortunately her daughter had to endure her mother's erratic behavior. Because of her appearance Lillian had issues of her own. Lillian makes it through puberty and meets the man of her dreams. She finds herself showing some of Mema's mental behavior toward the people she loves. With the help of time, and an old friend, she finally faces her demons, forcing the mental anguish out of her family's future, giving them the opportunity to do great things.

A group of friends grow up in New Orleans, the main character, Dee, wakes up in the hospital not remembering anything, so he goes on the mental journey of his life. This is where he discovers how family lies can break up a family, make two friends enemies, and end friendships that had been in place since childhood.

Katrina: One Set of Footprints is a story that needed to be told. For years Paulette has placed this experience to the back of her mind only thinking about it every now and again. The more she listens to others' stories the more she realizes that her story is different. As she sits in her home watching the water rise she asks herself the question over and over, why did she stay? In trying to find the answer it dawns on her that she was not supposed to move to New Orleans until 2006. She examines how she ends up in New Orleans during this horrific storm. In the end, she realizes that she was where she was supposed to be and her every step was ordered.
