A comprehensive overview of the basic principles of radar polarimetry is presented. The relevant fundamental field equations are first provided. The importance of the propagation and scattering behavior in various frequency bands, the electrodynamic foundations such as Maxwell's equations, the Helmholtz vector wave equation and especially the fundamental laws of polarization are presented in the first section. Main poins are the polarization Ellipse, the polarization ratio, the Stokes Parameter, and the Stokes and Jones vector formalisms as well as its presentation on the Poincare sphere and on relavent map projections. The Polarization Fork descriptor and the associated van Zyl polarimetric power density and Agrawal polarimetric phase correlation signatures are introduced also in order to make understandable the polarization state formulations of electromagnetic waves in the frequency domain. The different relevant matrices, the respective terms like Jones Matrix, S-matrix, Muller M-matrix, Kennaugh K-matrix, etc. and its interconnections are defined and described together with change determined for the coherent and partially coherent cases, respectively. Concludes with worked examples and references for further reading.

Optimal Feedback Control Formulation of the Active Noice Cancellation Problem: Pointwise and Distributed. Practical design is based on the concept of a continuously operating microphone (or group of microphones) sampling the enviornment and a speaker (or group of speakers) producing interfering waves that will cancel the noise. Applications include industrial work environments. Chapter titles are ...(1) Introduction ...(2) Previous Work on Active Noise Cancellation ...(3) Pointwise Optimal Feedback Control for ANC [including both single and multiple microphone methods] ...(4) Modeling of Unwanted Noise at a Single Microphone ...(5) Distributed Optimal Feedback Control for ANC ...(6) Conclusions.

The advent of rare-earth permanent magnets (REPMs) has brought the realization of novel magnetic structures that are not practicable otherwise. So different are these remarkable materials from the earlier magnets that conventional design wisdom is inadequate to fully exploit their unique characteristics. Indeed, the conventional wisdom can lead to error or to the employment of cumbersome procedures that are quite unnecessary for REPMs. The salutary characteristics stem from two basic attributes of the rare-earth materials: 1) large intrinsic moments per unit volume; 2) extraordinarily high resistance to demagnetization by external or internal demagnetization fields. Chapter titles are ...(1) Introduction ...(2) Magnetic Circuit Design [subsections are: Magnetic Analogue to Ohm's Law, Example of Magnetic Gap Field Calculations, Flux Confinement by Cladding, Clad Permanent Magnet Solenoids] ...(3) Linear Structures Composed Entirely of Rigid Permanent Magnets ...(4) Flux Confinement to Polygonal Cavities ...(5) Rod Ensembles ...(6) Three Dimensional Structures ...(7) Structural Simplification with Magnetic Mirrors ...(8) Periodic Permanent Magnet Stacks - PPM's [subsections are: Travelling Wave Tubes, Wigglers and Undulators, Twister Structures] ...(9) Conclusions, References, and Bibliography.

Excerpt from the Preface--"The great progress which the art of perfumery has made during recent times is due to several causes, the chief one of which is fully realized only by the manufacturer on a large scale, who stands, as it were, behind the scenes and has access to facts and information concerning the materials he uses, which are not so easily accessible to the dilettante in perfumery, or remain altogether unknown to the latter. This important factor is the advance in our knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of the several substances used in perfumery, whereby we can better discriminate between the genuine and the spurious, the choicest and the inferior, thus insuring, at the very start, a satisfactory result, instead of being compelled to resort to wasteful experimentation and empiricism. A better knowledge has also been gained of the sources of the commercial varieties of many of the crude products, and a better insight into the conditions affecting their qualities or properties. "
