Pierre Bayle bereitete durch seinen Kampf gegen Theologie und spekulative Philosophie, den er mit Hilfe des Skeptizismus führte, den Boden für die Entwicklung aufklärerischer und materialistischer Ideen in Frankreich. Bayles kritische Betrachtungen über Religion und Moral, über Theologie und Wissenschaft, über den Atheismus und eine atheistische Gesellschaft, nutzt Feuerbach zur Propagierung eigener aufklärerischer Auffassungen: Er kritisiert jegliche Vermittlung von Theologie und Wissenschaft, von Philosophie, Religion und reaktionärer Politik und plädiert für eine Philosophie, die die Wissenschaften und das allgemeine Wohl befördert. Unter Feuerbachs Schriften erinnert dieses weit über den Rahmen einer philosophiegeschichtlichen Darstellung hinausgehende Werk in besonderem Maße ab die streitbaren Schriften der französischen Aufklärer und Atheisten des 18. Jahrhunderts.

Für die Heine-Säkularausgabe musste eine Entscheidung bezüglich der chronologischen Anordnung getroffen werden. Gewählt wurde eine Anordnung, die zusammengehörige Werkkomplexe, zum Beispiel die Prosateile der "Reisebilder" oder die "Lutezia", als selbständige Bandeinheiten begreift. Ähnlich wie Heine selbst in der Ausgabe seiner französischsprachigen Werke bestimmte, werden in der Säkularausgabe gleichzeitig entstandene Texte nach inhaltlicher Übereinstimmung zusammengefast, so das sich eine leicht zu überschauende Anordnung des Gesamtwerkes ergibt. Band 3 enthält die Gedichte 1845 bis 1856 mit "Romanzero" und Einzelgedichten aus den Jahren 1845 bis 1856.

Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.

This book presents an ethnographic perspective on the intersection of humor, identity, and belonging. Based on recorded interactions between Americans and Japanese, it explores how beliefs and stereotypes surrounding gaijin 'foreigner' identities create various types of humor such as mockery, sarcasm, and conversational jokes. Through this analysis, the study also discusses how identity-focused humor impacts participants' understandings of interculturality and social belonging. In particular, it argues that while "being an outsider" can be marginalizing, humor allows cultural differences to become a basis for developing inclusion and social unity, in part through the recognition of shared norms and values.

Intelligentsia has been a widely used term in the studies of history and society to describe intellectual, academic, educational and publishing circles. Zhang Qing analyses the formation of Chinese intelligentsia in the context of modern China, more specifically the late Qing dynasty and Republic of China, and addresses topics such as the expansion of newspaper distributions, the relationship between newspapers and academia, the impact of newspapers on society, the change of readers' expressions and scholars' social mobility. The emergence of the intelligentsia and other circles in the early twentieth century is an epitome of the drastic changes in Chinese society at the time, indicative both of a new state-society relation and of Chinese scholars' efforts to find new roles and identities for themselves after bidding farewell to imperial examinations. The author shows how both the emergence of new-type publications and new roles in academia had a profound influence on modern China. The formation of the intelligentsia at the turn of the twentieth century was not only a key to grasping modern Chinese history, but also a mirror for examining the future society.

Morphological typology is usually limited to the realm of grammar. Accordingly, English is considered an analytic language due to its poor grammatical morphology - but what about the lexicon? Taking a twofold approach, this study investigates the typological development of English nouns since 1150. First, the focus is on the means used to extend the lexicon: Correlating the central noun formation processes as well as borrowing reveals, for the first time, their quantitative importance - with some surprising results. Second, the structure of the lexicon takes center stage: The morphological analysis of all nouns uncovers diachronic shifts - and striking parallels between grammar and lexicon.

Aldo Quarisa's Diary: An Italian-English EditionEdited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace. Transcribed and with a preface by Galileo Sartor. Translation of the diary by Aisling Reid (Italian-English). In 1943, Aldo Quarisa worked at a military school in Florence, where he taught literature. In October of that year, one month after Italy had surrendered to the Allied forces, the Italians declared war on the Germans. In Florence, the German occupiers responded quickly, by arresting and deporting people with military connections to numerous concentration camps in Austria. Quite suddenly, Aldo was detained and deported through a network of camps, including Benjaminovo and the Stalag X-B internment camp, near the Austrian village of Sandbostel. For two years, he found himself imprisoned alongside other Italians, including the celebrated journalist Giovannino Guareschi, who secretly kept a diary that was later published as his Diario Clandestino 1943-1945 in 1946. Much like Guareschi, Aldo also kept a diary and excerpts are published here in both Italian and English for the first time. The diary describes in unprecedented detail the monotony of camp life, the cruelty of the guards and the prisoners' struggle to survive. The text is an important document that preserves the memory and voices of all those who suffered during the war and will inevitably be of interest to readers with an interest in World War II.

This book thematizes the tension between education, politics, and religion in Norway after the Second World War, with an emphasis on the years between 1945 and 1970, and throws a new light on Norwegian school and education in the post-war period. The Norwegian educational landscape in the years after the Second World War must be seen against the development of the welfare state, and it appears as a part of the social democracy project typical for Norway at that time. The Labour Party, which held a prominent position in the educational landscape in the post-war decades, is normally regarded to have been an important driving force behind secularization of schools in Norway, not least because the total number of weekly lessons in religious education gradually was reduced. This book problematizes this thesis and enlightens how important politicians and policymakers within the Labour Party defended religious education. A central point is that this defense must be seen within the frames of a liberally oriented protestant theology. Thus, the study highlights the diversity of ideas in Norwegian politics in the post-war period and demonstrates how important impulses in Norwegian politics can be viewed against a wider international background.

Die Institution des antiken griechischen Symposions wird in der bisherigen Forschung wie folgt charakterisiert: Es handle sich dabei um eine aristokratische Einrichtung, die ausschließlich Männern vorbehalten war. Doch erlaubt dieses dominierende Deutungsmodell tatsächlich, dem griechischen Trinkgelage epochenübergreifend gerecht zu werden? Um dies zu überprüfen, bot es sich an, von den ersten Zeugnissen zum Symposion auszugehen. Gegenstand des Buches sind daher Text- und Bildzeugnisse des 8.-6. Jahrhunderts v.Chr. Dreh- und Angelpunkt war dabei der sogenannte "Nestorbecher" von der Insel Ischia, ein Trinkgefäß, dessen dreizeilige, poetisch geformte Inschrift als erstes Testimonium für das spezifisch griechische Trinkgelage anzusehen ist. Ausgehend von diesem im ersten Kapitel behandelten Objekt und seinem kulturellen Kontext werden dann in den übrigen drei Kapiteln, gerade auch in Bezug auf das Verhältnis zwischen Schriftgebrauch und Symposion, drei Problembereiche analysiert, mit dem Ergebnis, dass das frühgriechischen Trinkgelage von vielerlei Mischungen bestimmt wird, die im Zeichen der Gottheiten Dionysos und Aphrodite stehen und Männer wie freizügige Frauen betreffen, ohne dass diese Institution auf Aristokraten beschränkt war.

Wie sehr unser Alltag auf Konsensen der unterschiedlichsten Art beruht, merkt man immer dann, wenn diese implizit oder explizit aufgekündigt werden. Damit verbunden ist eine Begriffs- und Theoriegeschichte, der sich die Beiträge dieses Bandes aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive widmen. Gegenstand ist der zentrale Beitrag eines vielsprachigen und multikulturellen Jahrtausends, das wir gewöhnlich Mittelalter nennen. Im Mittelpunkt der Begriffsarchäologie in historischer und systematischer Absicht steht der Begriff "consensus", der auch in gegenwärtigen Debatten eine beachtliche Konjunktur besitzt. Ein Konsens beruht auf einer in vernünftiger Rede konstituierten Gemeinsamkeit. Die ihm zugrundeliegende Übereinstimmung ist jedoch von der Art der gut begründeten, anerkannten Meinungen, nicht von der Art der Beweise. Im Unterschied zur Zustimmung aus rein theoretischen Gründen tritt beim consensus zur Einsicht in die Gründe ein Moment willensmäßiger Zustimmung hinzu. Zugespitzt gesagt: Ein Konsens muss auch gewollt sein. Wie aber kommt ein Konsens zustande und was geschieht, wenn er aufgekündigt wird? Der historische Blick zeigt uns wie in einem Laboratorium die zentrale Idee wie auch die Perspektivenvielfalt der Konsensthematik.

Das Werk untersucht, ob es nach geltendem Recht Mechanismen gibt, die es im Insolvenzverfahren über das Vermögen eines konzernierten Rechtsträgers zulassen, auf das Vermögen verbundener Gesellschaften zuzugreifen. Auf der Kehrseite werden die Risiken eines solchen Eingriffs betrachtet: Gruppen-Folgeverfahren, Insolvenzanfechtungen sowie die haftungsrechtlichen Probleme der Geschäftsführungsorgane stehen im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung.

Die Nuslehre Alexander von Aphrodisias' wird als eine erhellende, innovative und systematisierende Interpretation von Aristoteles rekonstruiert, die durch die Theorie der Integration der Potenzen die Konstitution komplexer Formen (wie der Seele) erklärt, ohne auf platonisierende Strukturen zurückzugreifen. Dafür wird einen Aktivität und Passivität integrierenden dynamis -Begriff herausgearbeitet, der die Entfaltung der prinzipiell unveränderlichen Form ermöglicht, sodass die Komplexität der Seele aus den Relationen zwischen deren Potenzen resultiert. Diese Theorie erreicht ihren spekulativen Höhepunkt in der Nuslehre, die den Intellekt als einen maximal integrierten, einheitlichen Ternar darstellt, dessen Strukturmomente der materielle, habituelle und wirkliche Nus sind. Diese sind weder verschiedene Vermögen noch Entwicklungsphasen, sondern die konstitutiven, sich ergänzenden Funktionen der einen Vernunft. Die Lehre Alexanders ist relevant für aktuelle Debatten über Nus und sein Beitrag zur historischen Entwicklung der Idee der Vernunft originell. So erscheint Alexander als eine bereichernde Stimme, die sowohl in die spezialisierte Aristoteles-Forschung als auch in die systematische Diskussion über Geist und Seele einzubinden ist.

Im interdisziplinären Zusammenhang lässt sich in jüngerer Zeit eine Art "Wiederkehr der Rache" beobachten - Versuche, Rache oder Vergeltung zu rehabilitieren und anthropologisch zu verankern. Lisanne Teuchert arbeitet geistesgeschichtlich drei Ebenen dieser Umbewertung heraus: Emotionen, Überzeugungen und Praktiken. In allen drei Teilen wird der aktuelle Fachdiskurs pointiert zusammengefasst, bevor aus spezifisch theologischer Perspektive darauf reagiert wird. Zwischen einer Geschichte der Dämonisierung einerseits und der neuerlichen Verteidigung andererseits nimmt die Verfasserin einen theologischen Standort ein, der auf die Ambivalenz aller Zwischenmenschlichkeit verweist. Eine echt interdisziplinäre, hochaktuelle Studie, die gleichzeitig theologische Position bezieht.

The role of phonetic detail within the language system and its interplay with other kinds of linguistic information represent a hotly debated territory. In the current volume, different types of phonetic nuances are examined with a particular focus on their relation to phonological, morphological, and semantic/pragmatic phenomena. These three interfaces - the phonetic-phonological, the phonetic-morphological, and the phonetic-semantic/pragmatic one - are investigated from a variety of angles and by consistently taking the rapport between phonetics and phonology into consideration. In doing so, we provide an up-to-date picture of research dealing with the interaction of distinct linguistic areas, and also discuss the question if and when phonology is needed to mediate between phonetics and other linguistic domains.

The Languages and Linguistics of Northern Asia: A Comprehensive Guide surveys the indigenous languages of Asia's North Pacific Rim, Siberia, and adjacent portions of Inner Eurasia. It provides in-depth descriptions of every first-order family of this vast area, with special emphasis on family-internal subdivision and dialectal differentiation. Individual chapters trace the origins and expansion of the region's widespread pastoral-based language groups as well as the microfamilies and isolates spoken by northern Asia's surviving hunter-gatherers. Separate chapters cover sparsely recorded languages of early Inner Eurasia that defy precise classification and the various pidgins and creoles spread over the region. This is the very first publication mapping onomatopoeia in the languages of the world. The publication provides a comprehensive, multi-level description of onomatopoeia in the world's languages. The sample covers six macro-areas defined in the WALS: Euroasia, Africa, South America, North America, Australia, Papunesia. Each language-descriptive chapter specifies phonological, morphological, word-formation, semantic, and syntactic properties of onomatopoeia in the particular language. Furthermore, it provides information about the approach to onomatopoeia in individual linguistic traditions, the sources of data on onomatopoeia, the place and the function of onomatopoeia in the system of each language.

The study of language contact in the "new" English varieties is frequently influenced by sociolinguistic approaches and reference to substrate languages but much less often to functionally-based contact linguistic theory. Der Band geht davon aus, dass sich die Literatur und ihre Wissenschaft transdisziplinär gestalten und von Denkfiguren, Metaphern oder Modellen anderer Disziplinen speisen und umgekehrt zu einem zentralen Ort innovativer Begriffsbildung werden. Werden solche Prozesse literaturwissenschaftlicher Beschreibungsvokabulare selbst zum Gegenstand der Betrachtung, dann fallen verstärkt Rupturen, mitunter auch Kontroversen im Gebrauch der vielfach aus den Bereichen von Organizität und Technizität transferierten Metaphoriken ins Auge: Organisches und Technisches überlagern sich, interferieren, tauschen die Plätze. Eben diesen Phänomenen der Grenzüberschreitung in der metaphorischen Übertragung von Verbindungen des Organischen und Technischen - die im Angesicht neuester Technologien und Biopolitiken mehr den "Normalfall", denn eine Ausnahme bilden - geht der Band aus einer historiographischen Perspektive vom Mittelalter bis heute nach. "Organitechnoscience" stellt sich somit als Laborbegriff vor, literarische wie literaturtheoretische Operationen technischer und organischer Interferenzen nicht nur post , sondern auch ante digitisation nachzuzeichnen und auf ihre wissenspolitischen Dimensionen hin zu befragen.

Literarische Gattungen existieren nicht einfach so, sondern sie werden vielmehr ,gemacht'. Der Band perspektiviert Gattungen und ihre wechselvollen Dynamiken von daher praxeologisch und nimmt sie als Ergebnis spezifischer Praktiken der Produktion, Distribution, Klassifikation und Wertung durch unterschiedliche Akteur*innen des Literatursystems und der Literaturwissenschaft in den Blick.

Dieser Band lotet vor dem Hintergrund einer krisenhaften Gegenwart das Verhältnis von Verletzbarkeit und Institutionen aus. Kleine Formen sind jüngst in das Blickfeld literatur-, medien- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen geraten. Dabei wird oft das politische Potenzial kleiner Formen verkannt. Eingebettet in fluide Publikationsorgane und insbesondere im digitalen Kontext können sie unterschwellig kollektive Dynamiken bündeln, kritisch-subversiv den gesellschaftspolitischen Status quo infrage stellen und alternative Gemeinschaftsbildung entwerfen - auch in gattungspolitischer Hinsicht: So lenkt das Prekäre und Randständige kleiner Formen den Blick auf die Unabgeschlossenheit von Gattungen und lässt die dynamischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Genres, Schreibweisen und Medien hervortreten. In drei Sektionen behandelt der Band die politische Kommunikation kleiner Formen: als Teil einer digitalen Streit- und Protestkultur; als diskursive Plattform für Zeitgeschichte sowie als kreative Ausdrucksregime, die - etwa als Paratexte - auch formalästhetisch hegemoniale Sichtweisen und Wahrnehmungsmodi entthronen können.
