- The Story of Bertha Strehlow
283,95 kr. "Leni Shilton offers us a woman's exploration of loss and survival in the unforgiving and beautiful landscape of central Australia. Bertha Strehlow, overshadowed by her anthropologist husband's achievements, was a woman of integrity and a brilliant observer and connector of people in settings such as the Great Sandy Desert over many years of endurance. In this volume, Leni Shilton restores to her a voice. Walking with Camels is charged with the lovely strangeness of a re-imagined perspective: Bertha Strelhow exists here in a lyrical history that is inner, poetic, singular and deeply mysterious and we are reminded of the moving gravity of so many untold stories." - Gail Jones

273,95 kr. When Doris Brett's fit and healthy 59-year-old husband Martin had a stroke, they were unexpectedly thrown into a journey of discovery. What began as a minor stroke turned into a golf-ball sized blood clot on his brain, followed by a life-threatening heart condition. Later, Doris learned that she carried the potentially deadly BRCA1 genetic mutation. Due largely to Doris' research into brain plasticity and the neurotherapy techniques she implemented, Martin's recovery was exceptional and he has now returned to all of his pre-stroke activities. The Twelfth Raven is a literary journey through a series of crises and is an inspirational story of recovery after stroke. Doris Brett's brave and unflinching memoir offers hope to the hundreds of thousands of people affected by stroke through the active intervention Doris conducted and the excellent results that were achieved. *** Praise for Doris Brett's previous memoir, Eating the Underworld: "Extraordinary...Its bravery, irony, humour and intelligence - everything shines through the transparent prose...a remarkable literary voice, or melding of three voices - the autobiographical, the poetic, and the allegorical." -- Dr. Oliver Sacks

- the rock art of the macropod hunters and the mollusc harvesters
623,95 kr. The genesis for this study came out of the industrial development of the Burrup, once one of the 42 islands of the Dampier Archipelago, located on the Pilbara region's coast of Western Australia. One of the major rock art provinces in Australia, the Dampier Archipelago arguably comprises the highest concentration of petroglyphs in the world. Ownership of the rock art lies with the local Aboriginal people - its custodianship is held by Yaburara descendants and Ngarluma people. The book presents a model of the artistic traditions and the associated petroglyph production, suggesting five major phases for the Dampier Archipelago and providing insights into a world that existed for Indigenous Australians over many thousands of years. - The Father of Modern Seychelles, a Biography
563,95 kr. Albert Rene is a towering figure of modern Seychelle, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, east of mainland Southeast Africa and northeast of the island of Madagascar. He arouses intense emotions in both admirers and opponents. This first full-length biography analyzes Rene's early years, his political awakening, and his struggle for full electoral support in the face of strong opposition. Frustrated by the slow pace of Seychelle's economic development and the extent of social division along racial lines, Albert Rene took the fateful decision to seize power by coup d'etat in 1977. It is a dramatic story, which includes an attempted invasion by South African mercenaries. In 1992-93, Rene finessed a change from a one-party socialist state to multi-party rule. He bequeathed to his successor a transformed nation that had shed its oppressive racial hierarchy and had attained the highest social and economic indicators within the African region. Underlying the political drama is the story of the compassion and romance of the all too human man that is Albert Rene. The book adds authority to this account by the depth of research through archives and contemporary newspapers, as well as extensive interviews covering both his political and personal life, the latter including interviews with all three of Albert Rene's wives. *** "A saga of political drama, struggle, and ultimately hope...fascinating from cover to cover, and highly recommended especially for public and college library biography collections." -- Midwest Book Review, Library Bookwatch, The Biography Shelf, October 2014 [Subject: Biography, Politics, History, African Studies]Ã?Â?Ã?Â?Ã?Â?Ã?Â?
