Forty years ago, the Second Wave Feminist Movement was in full swing in America. Besides fighting for legal issues such as equal pay in the marketplace and the right to have a credit card or keep one's own name, feminists demanded women's health and reproductive rights, marriage reform, and sexual freedom. Radical women began to question the very concept of God as male, with "man in his image," and from this revolutionary brew, the Women's Spirituality movement was born. Just as foam-born Aphrodite arose from the sea, the revolutionary Goddess movement arose to inspire women around the country and the world to begin researching ancient worldwide Goddess-based cultures and to create spontaneous circles of women's ritual and Goddess worship. Some called themselves witches, leaving the church or temple to start covens or churches of their own; others worked within mainstream religious frameworks to bring the "feminine" into what had earlier been male-only priesthoods and doctrines. This seeming explosion of creative religious expression on the part of contemporary Western women is the thematic focus of this book; the 33 chapters are the individual stories of the movement's founders in their own words. This is an important book for Women's Studies and the study of Women's Spirituality.

Most accounts of Italian immigration published in English have dealt with the waves of migration from southern Italy, but very little has been written on those who left northern Italy and their migration patterns. This book explores the factors that drove people who were strongly attached to their home paese (towns) to become global adventurers, as well as what factors drew them to central Massachusetts. Research was completed using American archives and in Italian-language sources in Venice, Treviso, Vittorio Veneto, and Belluno, Italy. At first the Veneti sought seasonal work in Austria and then moved across northern Europe. As conditions worsened, they became increasingly mobile. They used the transport systems to commute to Massachusetts where opportunities in quarries, foundries, and factories attracted seasonal workers. Many emigrants used temporary work to support their families in the mountains from 1880-1900 but it became increasingly difficult. My research shows that there was a complex migration of highly mobile northerners and their mobility began earlier than from the south. Over time large numbers of northern Italians found that Central Massachusetts offered opportunity. Unlike many southerners who settled in New York and Chicago, many northern Italians settled in industrialized smaller towns where they had originally found seasonal work. As one of America's most highly-industrialized regions with a strong demand for unskilled labor, first and second generation European immigrants became 74% of the population; but the influx led to a backlash in the 1920s as anti-Italian hostility intensified during the Sacco and Vanzetti trial.

News workers are at the center of change. They are asked to adhere to policy, reflect the community, and uphold journalistic norms. Journalism has always been a high-pressure profession, so how, considering this history, are news workers tackling more responsibilities with fewer staff? What mechanisms have been put into place to produce content across multiple platforms, and what has been sacrificed in this effort? There is a false impression of the journalist and the reporters being the lowest rung on the ladder of influence when it comes to content. This book corrects this misperception and situates news workers in sphere that includes new platforms and the changing landscape of the newsroom itself. This ethnography identifies and explores several means of control among organizations, explores the mechanics of daily news work at print organizations, and explores the clever ways news workers resist policy detrimental to journalisms' civic function. This book demonstrates the limits on organizations to completely control news work and looks at the ways autonomy has been lost and rediscovered by the modern news worker. This study takes participant observation in the newsroom and creates a unique model for qualitative work in the future. Author William Schulte, an assistant professor of mass communication at Winthrop University, uses a conversational style to provide detailed understanding of modern news work, its struggles, and its changes.
