Volume 10 is a direct continuation and extension of Volume 3 in this series, Visual Cortex.

David Jones, Nature (1990) 348:290 Optical imaging of the brain is a rapidly growing field of heterogenous techniques that has attracted considerable interest recently due to a number of theoretical advantages in comparison with other brain imaging modalities: it uses non­ ionizing radiation, offers high spatial and temporal resolution, and supplies new types of metabolic and functional information. From a practical standpoint it is important that bedside examinations seem feasible and that the implementations will be considerably less expensive compared with competing techniques. In October 1991, a symposium was held at the Eibsee near Garmisch, Germany to bring together the leading scientists in this new field.

The project was originally conceived in 1985 when Paul van Geert, who had just completed his Theory building in developmental psychology (North Holland, 1986), agreed to col laborate on anAnnals volume examining foundational issues pertaining to the concept of development.

Peter Gabriel Bergmann started his work on general relativity in 1936 when he moved from Prague to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In 1942, Bergmann published the book "Introduction to the Theory of Relativity" which included a foreword by Albert Einstein.

The problems which this book addresses is to maintain an organic unity between new ideas and the current profusion of innovative experimental tools.

Although there are a number of excellent current reviews on one or another aspect of cytomegalovirus, the last comprehensive treatment of this subject was that of Krech et al. Each area might have been reviewed and analyzed by workers more expert than myself.
