Please note: this Solis Classics edition of the book is the complete version of the story. The buyers' reviews below are not necessarily for this particular version. Please cross-check the reviews' dates with the publication date of this edition. The Wreck of the "Golden Mary" was first published in the Christmas issue of Household Words in 1856. Household Words was a London-based weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens. The magazine contained serialized stories by many now-famous writers. In the magazine, Dickens would often collaborate with other writers, particularly on special issues, and this story is one of those collaborations. Here, different sections of the book are written from the perspective of some of the characters who feature in the story. The idea being that each section of the story was written by a different writer. The writers were Wilkie Collins, Percy Hetherington Fitzgerald, Harriet Parr, Adelaide Anne Procter, James White and, of course, Charles Dickens himself. The story follows the journey of the sailing ship, Golden Mary, her crew and passengers as they attempt to travel from Liverpool to California. This book is the complete version of the story and has been reset in fresh type.

  • - A Study of the Popular Mind (Solis Classics)
    af Gustave Le Bon
    113,95 kr.

In this fascinating book, Gustave Le Bon examines the psychology of crowds. He posits that crowds have personalities, just like individuals, and that individuals change when part of a crowd. "The most careful observations seem to prove that an individual immersed for some length of time in a crowd in action soon finds himself-either in consequence of the magnetic influence given out by the crowd, or from some other cause of which we are ignorant-in a special state, which much resembles the state of fascination in which the hypnotized individual finds himself in the hands of the hypnotizer. The activity of the brain being paralysed in the case of the hypnotized subject, the latter becomes the slave of all the unconscious activities of his spinal cord, which the hypnotizer directs at will. The conscious personality has entirely vanished; will and discernment are lost. All feelings and thoughts are bent in the direction determined by the hypnotizer." This edition has been completely reset in fresh type.

First published in 1928, this Canadian classic describes the lives of the people that make up an isolated fishing community on the fictional island of Rockbound, off Nova Scotia. The book is set just before the start of the First World War, in the opening years of the twentieth century. This novel may be described as being of its time, but it still evokes the eternal battle between humans and their environment: the struggle of the fishermen to survive working in the harsh seas in order to earn their livings. Frank Parker Day (1881-1951) was a native of Nova Scotia and would have been able to draw on his own life experience to describe the island of Rockbound and its inhabitants.

  • af Theodor Storm

This novella, first published in 1888, was the final and arguably the finest work by German writer, Theodor Storm. Combining both realism and the supernatural, The Rider on the White Horse is full of symbolism and superstition. Here, humankind must battle against the forces of nature, a struggle embodied by the image of the phantom-like rider and his white horse galloping into the waves. This is a tale of a man from the North German fenlands who tries to tame not only the natural world but also the reactionary ideas and ingrained superstitions of his neighbors. Storm uses narrative framing, stories within stories, to move across time and conventional boundaries to explore different aspects of how we see ourselves, each other, and our relationship with our environment. The main narrative focuses on Hauke Haien, his dramatic encounters with the sea and his obsessive mission to protect the low-lying land, a quest that leads him into the realm of science and mathematics. There is a sense that superstition is under scrutiny by reason, yet an underlying uneasiness remains in the imagery that permeates the text: the incessant screaming and shrieking of the gulls, the roar of the waves, the constant reference to eyes with the "burning eyes" of the white-horse rider, and the inquiring gaze of the old schoolteacher. Nature is portrayed as wild, unpredictable, and disconcerting, while the community is always mindful of its destructive powers.

This new edition of The House of Memory: Stories by Jewish Women Writers of Latin America revisits the meaning of heritage and home, exploring the experience of losing the familiar to embrace the unknown. While often painful in its examination of antisemitism, this collection of essays embraces the belief that hope and love can triumph over adversity and racism. This collection contains over thirty stories from internationally acclaimed writers, such as Clarice Lispector and Margo Glantz, as well as new voices, with some appearing for the first time in English translations. Although many of the stories are rooted in the Jewish experience and tradition, there is a universal resonance that transcends place, race, gender and religion to speak of matters that are still ever-present to all of us.

    158,95 kr.

In this book, Henri Bergson examines human consciousness and proposes that evolution is motivated by an élan vital-a vital impetus-that can also be understood as humanity's natural creative impulse. "All the living hold together, and all yield to the same tremendous push. The animal takes its stand on the plant, man bestrides animality, and the whole of humanity, in space and in time, is one immense army galloping beside and before and behind each of us in an overwhelming charge able to beat down every resistance and clear the most formidable obstacles, perhaps even death." (page 158) The book also considers perception of time. Bergson thought of time as a more individual subjective experience, as opposed to the familiar empirical concept. Bergson's philosophy went on to influence modernist writers such as Marcel Proust. Bergson's text was also added to the Catholic Church's list of banned books: "In the presence of the false theories of this new Bergsonian philosophy, which seeks to shatter grand fundamental principles and truths, it is necessary to unmask the poisonous error of philosophic modernism. It is the more destructive because it is sugar-coated, subtle, and seductive in nature." (Pope Saint Pius X in 1913) "A great 19th-century French philosopher ... ." William Kingdon Clifford, FRS (1845-79) was an English mathematician and philosopher. His areas of research were very wide ranging and in this book, published posthumously, he demonstrates his interest in applying rational and scientific thought to the moral and ethical questions of human existence. The book republishes four of Clifford's essays: The Scientific Basis of MoralsRight and Wrong: The Scientific Ground of their DistinctionThe Ethics of BeliefThe Ethics of ReligionEven in our own 'post-modern age', it may be appropriate to reflect on Clifford's maxim of 'it is wrong always, everywhere and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence'. Perhaps humanity should apply Clifford's thought processes to the present-day problems of religious extremism, climate change and 'fake news'. This edition features short footnotes adding some explanations to the terms used in the original publication

This book, first published in 1902, is a collection of four, slightly interconnected, stories. O'Sullivan's characters flit between the stories, all of which have a slightly moralistic purpose. However, O'Sullivan's macabre sense of humour ensures that the tales do not preach, and he puts his black wit to good use in this hard-to-find collection.

A prose collection of 25 short stories where each story is titled with a mononym. The book, was described by the author as a book of monologues - perhaps he meant that the stories were not so much speeches of entertainment but one-sided views with no argument or questioning given by someone who is, best to say, not under-confident in their views.
