Sahm' Allah (The Arrow of Allah) in St Augustine is an action adventure thriller that involves three protagonists in three very different and seemingly unconnected adventures that only come together in the last chapters. Two of the lead characters are men and one is a woman. An unusual cadre of enemies of America have infiltrated our federal government and are planning a major destructive effort. Both the unconnected and finally the coordinated efforts of the three lead characters are needed to try to foil this planned unusual cataclysmic event that is not fully understood until the climax at the end.

Within these pages are bits and pieces of the lives of the members of the COA River House Writers. These clever ladies and gentlemen have met in the Council on Aging's St. Augustine River House every Wednesday morning at ten o'clock for the last four years. Under the guidance of journalist Peter Guinta, we share mostly memoirs, but also a few other types of writing, even fiction. We read our writings aloud and then the group makes comments and suggestions. The sharing is exhilarating, funny, sad, and deeply satisfying. We each have learned much about the art and craft of writing from each other and from Peter, our mentor. Several of our members have put together books of their own memoirs which their family and friends have enjoyed reading.

Dr. Draxel Syl has a wild, off-Earth adventure with a drop-dead gorgeous lady named Leura Clauson. Reeling from this experience, he wonders about trying to learn what really happened, who Leura actually is, and what these strange happenings are about. This leads to his learning of the other universes and humanoids, and finally to his being abducted and transferred by "portal" to another part of our galaxy by a Segwah star ship captain. The Segwah are a humanoid species closely related to Humans, but from a different universe in a different dimension of space-time. The Scentar, another humanoid species, are from yet another universe in another dimension. The Scentar and Segwah have been at war with each other for millennia, invading each other's universes and killing each other. Drax, a principal gravity scientist of the Eegis project in Pasadena has inadvertently created a slowly growing tear in the space-time fabric between the Human and Scentar universes. This tear, caused by one of his research projects at Eegis, could cause the two universes to fold into each other, annihilating both. While the Segwah are virtually identical to Earth's Neanderthals, the Scentar are quite the opposite, slender and physically very beautiful by human standards. Both Scentar and Segwah have cultures very different from each other and from Humans as well. The Scentar are quite different in another way. There are twice as many females as males because each female birth is identical twins, while male births are always single. This makes their culture and morality based on two female twins bonding with a single male, a very unusual family structure and related sexual morality.

This is a collection of short stories by Howard Johnson. Most of the stories are "hard" science fiction. The word "hard" means that the science basis is actually possible. It could also be called extrapolated science, based on real science, projected into the future in both time and space.

The author says of this book, Memoirs from the Lakeside - - "Over the years I have told many stories of things that happened in my life. I finally decided to write these stories as a series of memoirs. These memoirs were generated over many years and many situations. They range from my childhood to quite recently. There are stories of joy, love, happiness, excitement, wonder, amazement, adventure, and excitement, at least exciting to me. There are also stories of despair, tragedy, anger, disappointment, frustration, and other negatives. Life comes in all flavors for most of us, some of these are not so great. A few of them carry a great deal of pain, mostly now long past. There are even a few revelations that could surprise and possibly distress some of my family and friends. The truth is not always pretty. "I enjoyed a wonderful childhood as part of a loving family of several generations. I have been blessed with a terrific family both up and down the generations. I also have many dear friends, mostly from the many church families I have been part of during my entire life. Mostly with my family and friends, I have enjoyed a full life with far more ups than downs. I am fortunate to be one who revels in and remembers the dear people and good happenings while mostly minimizing and forgetting the bad. For this reason, even the stories about bad things emphasize the positive lessons learned from these negatives. Bumps in the road, even wash outs, teach one how to avoid the rough places and pitfalls. "The collection of quotes, essays, letters and other writings represent words and ideas that have had a positive teaching effect on me. Many of these are my own. They are mixed in with the words of others that I listen to and use to good advantage whenever and wherever possible. They were collected from many sources, mostly during the last fifty years of my life. I often page through these and read them over and over. I add to my collection regularly and perhaps there will be another book of memoirs with another group of quotes and other writings I find uplifting and informative. Of course, the time for collecting is getting short at this point in my life. "I hope my family and friends enjoy my writing. I certainly do. It is a treasure to sit at the Keyboard and turn thoughts into the written word to share with others. The following is a quote from the Preface of Memoirs from the Lakeside." "I was an avid reader for many years devouring all kinds of literature. Once I started writingat age seventy, my reading time gave way to mostly writing time. It has been this way ever since. To me, writing is so much more rewarding. Certainly I would like my words to be read, but my main pleasure lies in the writing. I would write even if I knew no one would ever read my words. "So think about writing. If there is a story or memory in you, give it the wings of the written word. Who knows how many others you may touch."

  • - How Americans can Solve the Energy Crisis in Ten Years
    af Howard Johnson

This book is a collection of descriptions of energy systems-past, present, and future-and of many possible and practical ways to replace fossil fuels with renewable fuels or nonfuel energy systems. All of the new systems described could lead to no-net carbon dioxide addition to our atmosphere. Using easily understandable terminology, the book describes the many energy systems, sources, fuels, conversions and usages that comprise our total energy system. Use of the information in the book could lead to new, safer power plants, new powering and fueling systems for our vehicles, and greater energy efficiency and reliability. These systems are real and practical alternatives that will replace the use of fossil fuels and stop the hemorrhaging of billions of U.S. dollars for petroleum imports. Some of these proposed systems are unusual and very recently announced. The book provides many unique and surprisingly workable, long-term answers to the growing concerns about energy, the economy, and greater energy efficiency and reliability. Adopting these new systems would significantly improve our balance of trade, our economy, our job opportunities and our technological presence. We do not have the luxury of time. The economic menace is here, now, and dangerous. If we don't act immediately, the already bad consequences could be catastrophic. Politicians and political forces will have much to do with how we deal with all types of energy related problems. For this reason there is much about politics and the ongoing battle between the federal government and private interests in the book. To ignore these powerful political forces that mostly stand in the way of technical progress and solutions to energy problems would result in an unrealistic view of our total energy situation.

The author says of this book, "Since 1945 I have collected a wide variety of sayings, letters, essays, poems, and quotes that appealed to me for many reasons, but mostly because they carried significant wisdom, addressed human values and weaknesses, or had humor. Many are very significant life lessons and values. All but the quotes are my own work along with many of the sayings. The quotes are from several hundred different sources. All of the sources and authors are acknowledged except for those marked, unknown or anonymous.

This is a collecttion of ten years of mostly political comentary as published in my BLOG, HoJo2Rants. Closed minds beware! Politically I am a REALIST, as that is the only 'IST I can remotely consider being a member of among all the 'ISTS out there. There is sure to be something in this collection that will raise the ire of those of every political persuasion. I am an equal opportunity offender, but liberal intellectuals lead the list of pointed barbs. There is a large section devoted to political quotes from many clever individuals. If you have a thin skin you may want to skip this section.

This is the second book of Blue Shift trilogy. Blue Shift, the first book, tells the story of the discovery of a star moving at ninety percent of the speed of light toward an intersection with the path our solar system is taking through the galaxy. This intersection will take place in approximately thirty years. Dr Charlie Botkin, from Cal Tech, one of the worlds top authorities on high energy physics is asked for help in determining just what the effects of the star's passing so close to the Earth might be. Shortly after the mysterious disappearance of his uncle C he becomes deeply involved in the ongoing task of predicting how close the star will pass, and what damage it might do. Working with the original group from Gemini, Crazy Charlie helps in their effort to keep the public calm. Armed with increasingly accurate projections of the path and possible effects of the ghost star, Charlie predicts there is a good chance it will pass with little or no effect on the Earth. In the midst of this, a new menace appears in the form of a large asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth. International cooperation on an unprecedented scale is organized to try to solve this unexpected new cataclysmic danger.

This little book delves into the multitude of questions, attitudes, and varied reactions to the global warming/climate change controversies. It looks at the actual realities and why there is so much passion tied to what should be a hard-nosed, scientific question to be researched. It has instead become a cause celeb for politicians and the media who have certainly at least muddied the waters with wild claims, exaggerations, and accusations that have taken it out of the realm of science and placed it firmly in the domain of politics where all rationality has evaporated and it has become a tool used to gain money and power and to bludgeon opponents. A collection of other real menaces with infinitely more danger to humanity is also discussed and considered.
