- Early Period
2.286,95 kr. British theatre has a greater tradition than any other, having started all the way back in 1311 and still going strong today. But that is too much for one book to cover, so this volume deals with early theatre and has a cut-off date in 1899. Still, this is almost six centuries, centuries during which British theatre not only developed but produced some of the greatest playwrights of all time and anywhere, including obviously Shakespeare but also Marlowe and Shaw. And they wrote some of the finest plays ever, which are known around the world. So there is plenty for this book to cover, just with the playwrights, plays and actors, but it also has information on stagecraft and theatres, as well as the historical and political background. This book has over 1,183 entries in the dictionary section, these being mainly on playwrights and plays, but others as well including managers and critics, and also on specific theatres, legislative acts and some technical jargon. Then there are entries on the different genres, from comedy to tragedy and everything in between. Inevitably, the chronology is quite long as it has a long period to cover and the introduction provides the necessary overview. The Historical Dictionary of Early British Theatre concludes with a pretty massive bibliography. That will be of use to particularly assiduous researchers, but this book itself is a good place to start any research since it covers periods that are far less well-known and documented, and ordinary theatre-goers will also find useful information.

- An Introduction to Public Relations for Archivists
990,95 kr. Now in Paperback! As institutional budgets become tighter and information sources wider and more complex, archivists, manuscript curators and staff of special collections seek ways to broaden the use of their materials, bringing their services and their story to wider publics. Advocating Archives: An Introduction to Public Relations for Archivists presents practical advice on how to find and relate to these publics: how to better serve the client in person, launch a fund-raising campaign, work with the media, market programs, organize programs around historical events, train and successfully use volunteers, and avoid the most common public relations errors by planning. Written by archivists with previous professional or practical experience in these fields, Advocating Archives offers simply written, practical guidelines for the professional or manager who either develops their own public relations program or works with public relations professional in their institution. Three studies in archival public relations, taken from the daily experience of their writers, provide material for the instructors in archival management courses. Part of a long-term public relations initiative undertaken by the Society of American Archivists, the book aims to make public relations skills an integral part of archival management, and to help the archivist, curator, or special collections professional direct the public's response to their work.

- Dramatic Characterization in Great Soprano Roles
746,95 kr. New in paperback! This book comes at a time when opera-lovers, singers, directors, and critics alike are taking a new look at the dramatic soprano heroines created by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, endeavoring to delve beyond inherited scholarly interpretation and gain a richer understanding of these compelling female characters. Artistically limited by the bel canto musical tradition popular at the time, Verdi launched a new style dramma per musica which also demanded a new soprano archetype. This book illustrates the musical evolution of the Verdi and Puccini soprano while illuminating the dramatic scope and power of these great heroines. Avoiding critical reductionism, Verdi and Puccini Heroines provides an unprecedented and probing discussion of how these great soprano roles were conceived and executed. Accordingly, the authors take a three-dimensional look at these heroines, examining seven operas: Il Trovatore, La Forza del Destino, Aida, La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot. The chapters, which are fully self-contained analyses, contain translations, illustrative musical examples, supplementary notes, and references to each opera's literary sources. The musical analysis, while thorough, is descriptive and accessible to all levels of readers.

- From Washerwoman to Evangelist
690,95 kr. Now available in paperback! This biography is the compelling story of Amanda Berry Smith, a former slave and washer-woman with less than a year of formal education who rose to become one of the nineteenth century's most important and successful Christian evangelists. Based on letters published in Christian newspapers, copies of her own newspaper The Helper, and numerous public records and documents, this biography puts Amanda Berry Smith's eventful life in a proper historical perspective, evaluating the significant impact of her deeds. It traces her beginnings as the child of freed blacks in antebellum Pennsylvania, her turbulent marriages, her search for communities and faith in New York City, and her eventual prominence as a camp-fire missionary and as a world traveler of spiritual faith. This thoughtful individual study probes the complex relationship between herself and other contemporary reformers, black and white, and answers many questions left unanswered by Smith's own autobiography.

- An Insider's View
988,95 kr. Bernadine E. Abbott Hoduski, founder of the American Library Association''s Government Documents Round Table (GODORT), could very well be considered the "mother" of all government documents librarians. Still an active member in the government and library community, her name resonates throughout information circles. Structured like a memoir, with tips about lobbying interwoven throughout, Lobbying for Libraries is a lively account of one woman''s 21-year mission to get funding for libraries to establish systems that improve the way information is distributed nationwide. She offers valuable guidelines on how to lobby as an individual or group, design a bill, communicate with policymakers through traditional and new technologies, and how to influence the legislative process. Hoduski has quilted the fabric of her experiences in policy making into an insightful book that is as entertaining as it is useful. Truly a worthwhile read for government document librarians, lobbyists, and policy makers.

- An Introduction to Information Science
825,95 kr. Information can be conceptualized in two fundamentally yet contradictory ways_it appears in the world as both a physical and a cognitive phenomenon. The dilemma information specialists face is similar to that of physicists who must cope with light as both a wave and a particle. Unlike physics, however, information science has yet to develop a unified theory that unites the contradictory conceptions of its essential theoretical object. While there are numerous books today that address information science as a scholarly discipline, for the most part they assume a prior knowledge of the field. The Problem of Information provides an accessible introduction to the essential concepts and research issues of information science while exploring the indeterminate nature of information as a theoretical object. Signifying how information science contributes to the disciplines from which it borrows, this book provides insight into computer science, cognitive psychology, semiotics, sociology, and political science. Designed specifically for the beginner student new to the field of information science.

- Rediscovering John Fletcher as John Wesley's Vindicator and Designated Successor
1.167,95 kr. John Fletcher's theology of Pentecost is generally unknown today, and this book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. His writings were in large part responsible for shaping the theology of early American Methodism, especially his treatise on Christian Perfection, which highlighted a theology of Pentecostal sanctification. Wood recounts the decisive influence Fletcher had on early Methodism, and shows that his writings were able to "e;control the opinions of the largest and most effective body of evangelical clergymen of the earth."e; Fletcher's views on the Holy Spirit were also relevant in the ecumenical movement, specifically with reference to the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order held in Lima, Peru, in 1982. This group recommended the introduction of a liturgy of the Spirit in Christian baptism. For students and scholars or general readers interested in Methodist history and theology. Also a resource for pastors-helpful in developing a theology of Pentecost that will preach in a relevant way in the contemporary world.
