- Theater and Performance in 1970s Spain
1.433,95 kr. This book examines troupes, plays, festivals, performative practices, and audiences active during the final years of the Franco dictatorship and the beginning of the transition to democracy. This period, spanning 1968 to 1982, is considered the historical moment that most directly shaped contemporary Spanish politics and society. The dominant narrative of the Transition has long portrayed it as a normalized, non-confrontational, and consensual process steered by political elites. But the world of Spanish theater tells a very different story--one in which ordinary Spaniards played a vital role in the transition to democracy. The chapters of this book draw on censorship files, photographs, audiovisual and textual material, and the author's own interviews with more than a dozen audience and troupe members. Using these sources, David Rodriguez-Solas examines the notable experimentation during this period with theatrical performance, music and ritual, the establishment of performing spaces and festivals, the development of touring networks as a way to evade censorship, and the creation of networks of support that opposed diverse forms of violence and repression. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in theater and the cultural and political history of Spain in the 1960s and 1970s.

- Suspicion, Trust, and Dialogue
658,95 kr. In our information age, deciding what sources and voices to trust is a pressing matter. There seems to be a surplus of both trust and distrust in and on platforms, both of which often amount to having your mindset remain the same. Can we move beyond this dichotomy, towards new forms of intersubjective dialogue? This book revaluates the hermeneutic tradition for the digital context. Today, hermeneutics has migrated from a range of academic approaches in to a plethora of practices in digital culture at large. We propose a 'scaled reading' of such practices: a reconfiguration of the hermeneutic circle, using different tools and techniques of reading. We demonstrate our digital-hermeneutic approach through case studies including toxic depression memes, the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial, and r/changemyview. We cover three dimensions of hermeneutic practice: suspicion, trust, dialogue. This book is essential reading for (under)graduate students in digital humanities and literary studies.

1.433,95 kr. This volume employs an urban lens to provide a critical analysis of the North Korean style of sustainable urban development in the face of severe sanctions and a scarcity of vital resources. With a focus on five major areas--population, economics, architecture, urban planning, and culture--the authors examine the preconditions that led to the emergence of ideas related to urban sustainability, assess and reassess the trends in sustainable development brought about by market forces, and recommend paths for their further intensification. Since this work covers a variety of topics, ranging from geomancy and social control to economic issues and green architecture (both locally and in comparison with European post-socialist cities and South Korea), it will point to lessons that other countries could learn from. The book will be a valuable reference for scholars, researchers, students, and the general public who have a regional interest in North Korea, Korean unification, and East Asia as a whole; and/or a topical interest in urban studies, urban sustainability, and post-socialist urban transformation.

- Authoritarian Nationalism, Hegemony and Emotions
658,95 kr. This book analyzes right-wing memory politics in Poland through the concept of "cursed soldiers" as a key memory symbol, and how it has been used to construct a narrow and exclusionary vision of Polish identity framed in terms of Catholicism, national culture, and traditional family values.Groundbreaking in its approach and combining top-down study with reception analysis, the book builds on the theory of hegemony, adding emotional dimensions to the understanding of memory politics and nationalism. It provides a detailed case study of Polish memory politics since 2015, when the Law and Justice Party (PiS) came to power, and offers insights into how historical memory is used to mobilize support within nationalist and populist movements. Through a range of data including interviews, participant observation, and analysis of various media, it presents a semiotic and emotional map of how these memory symbols are received and experienced in Polish society. The focus on Podlasie, a region with significant Belarusian population and a history of post-war partisan conflicts, highlights the complex interplay of memory, identity, and politics in contemporary Poland. This work is intended for a broad audience, including undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars, and non-specialist readers such as booksellers or librarians.

- Philosophical Explorations
1.365,95 kr. This volume brings together two philosophical research areas that have been subject to increased attention: work regarding the unique character of having an experience and studies on the nature and powers of imagination. The importance of imagination seems to stand in tension with the assumed unique and irreplaceable role of experience in our lives. However, new arguments in various philosophical debates suggest there is a need to examine how both areas of research interrelate and can enrich one another. The chapters in this volume examine whether the traditional accounts of experience and imagination need to be challenged. They are divided into thematic sections that discuss epistemological, ontological, normative, phenomenological, and intersubjective questions related to experience and imagination.Imagination and Experience is an essential resource for scholars and advanced students working in philosophy of mind, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of psychology.

1.682,95 kr. Slut Narratives in Popular Culture explores representations of slut shaming and the term "slut" in U.S. popular media, 2000-2020. It argues that cultural narratives of intersectional gender identities are gradually but unevenly shifting to become more progressive and sex positive.Moving beyond prior research on slut shaming, which exposes problematic conflations between women's morality and a sexual purity associated with White economic privilege, this book examines how narratives that perpetuate slut shaming are both contested and reinscribed through stories we circulate. It emphasizes effects of twenty-first century developments in digital communication and entertainment. The rapid evolution of genres combined with increased access to the consumption and production of texts stimulates more diverse storytelling. The book's analyses demonstrate twenty-first changes in how slut shaming is depicted and understood, while encouraging consumers and producers of pop culture to attend to cultural narratives as they reify or challenge the subordination of vulnerable populations.Aimed primarily at an academic audience, this book will also engage general readers interested in intersectional feminism, pop culture, new media, digital technologies, and socio-linguistic change. Readers will become more adept at deconstructing assumptions embedded in popular media, especially narratives informing slut shaming.

- Developing Leadership Skills Through Acting
477,95 - 1.365,95 kr. Leadership as Performance: Developing Leadership Skills through Acting is based on the premise that leadership is a performance, a role played by leaders to inspire followers to achieve a shared goal. Thus, the book explores how acting techniques can facilitate the development of leadership skills. For this purpose, it introduces the SPACE model of leadership development, which is based on five key leadership skills: self-awareness, presence, authenticity, communication, and emotional intelligence. The book is divided into three parts. The first part explores the metaphor of leadership as a performance and the fundamentals of both leadership and acting. The second part elaborates on the SPACE model by showing how each of the five key leadership skills can be developed with acting techniques. The final part explores how improvisation can help leaders adapt to change, work with teams, and foster creativity and innovation. It also discusses the role of visionary leadership in inspiring others and creating a shared purpose. Readers are provided with tools to build on their skills through a range of pedagogy, including: A set of self-reflective questions in each chapter, acting-based exercises and improvisations in the most practical chapters, discussions of cases of well-known leaders. This book is ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, executive education courses, and for anyone interested in developing their leadership skills through acting.

- Motivations of Former Participants in Al-Shabaab
1.433,95 kr. This book focuses on the involvement of some Kenyans in al-Shabaab, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda based in Somalia, despite their country's relative stability compared to Somalia. The book discusses the origin of the Kenyan state and how colonization created social stratification that benefited elites closer to the centre, while excluding marginalized groups at the periphery. The argument is that this pattern still prevails, despite attempts to enhance equality, such as the adoption of a new constitution in 2010 promoting the devolution of power and resources. The persistence of this condition, it is argued, is what initially handed al-Qaeda and later al-Shabaab opportunities for mobilization, enabled by its creative politicization of religion. The heavy-handed tactics employed by security forces under the auspices of the 'War on Terror' further catalysed this process, resulting in more Kenyan individuals joining the group. Using an historical and political process approach, the book shows how the interplay of structural conditions and al-Shabaab's mobilization strategy linked with individuals' motivations for joining the group. Based on individuals' own narratives about their participation, the latter is empirically demonstrated to be non-linear, incorporating motivations beyond rational ones, contrary to the overemphasis on ideology in the literature on participation in groups similar to al-Shabaab.This book will of much interest to students of political violence, African politics, Islamic studies and International Relations.

- Essays on a Shifting Relationship
507,95 - 1.433,95 kr. Power and Space sets out the inherently spatial nature of power today and seeks to change the conversation around how power exercises us in the contemporary moment. The essays brought together in this book are a response to the fact that conventional descriptions of power and its ordered geographies no longer chime with our lived experience. Spatiality matters to the workings of power nowadays and this book sheds light on what it is that we face when power is exercised though more subtle, spatially nuanced arrangements. It is divided into three parts, each representing a different kind of engagement with power's relationship to space, from the spatial shifts in the way power is exercised through to its assemblage-like entanglements, and, in turn, its progressive topological character. Throughout the book a wide range of social, political, and economic examples are drawn upon to illustrate a more provisional sense of power, ranging for instance from the seductive logic of privatized public spaces to the attempt by a data analytics company to manipulate political behaviour, through to the offshore spaces invented by rising financial elites to challenge the established banking order.Illustrating the new-found abilities of the powerful to make their presence felt, this book provides an accessible account of the practical workings of power in the present-day. It will be invaluable to students and academics in human geography and urban studies as well as politics, sociology and cultural studies.

- A Research Agenda
1.433,95 kr. This collection sets out an innovative research agenda for advancing a multidisciplinary approach to genre, bringing together researchers from a variety of disciplines to enhance our existing understanding of the challenges and opportunities for current and future genre research. The volume brings together perspectives from across disciplinary borders, including such fields as discourse studies, cognitive studies, computational discourse analysis and education, to advance genre research into new directions, as it has historically been studied from a mono-disciplinary perspective. The book highlights how fruitful a multidisciplinary approach can be in accounting for the dynamic complexity of the discourse genres that underpin daily life, exploring six broad themes: defining genre; stability and variation; genre and cognition; computational methods; language and literacy development; and genre education. Taken together, the volume makes the case for the value of such an approach in better accounting for the conceptual and empirical complexities of genre and in turn, serving as a springboard for innovations in genre research. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in linguistics, discourse studies, discourse psychology, media studies, language and literacy development, and education.

1.433,95 kr. In highlighting how a WHO Public Health Approach (PHA) has been successfully used in developing countries to provide HIV/AIDS patients with antiretroviral therapy (ART), this important book provides a template for how the PHA can be implemented to treat other chronic but non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well. With over 28 million people globally now receiving treatment for HIV/AIDS, it's clear there are lessons to be learnt from the provision of ART which have great relevance for NCD care and towards achieving Universal Health Coverage in the global south. The first section of the book provides a detailed overview of the strategy that enabled such a successful program to be take place, the challenges faced and its evolution over time. The book then moves on to assert that by approaching other chronic NCDs in a similar way, focussing on populations with integrated long-term and short-term person-centred care, there is a pathway towards universal health care and Universal Health Coverage across the developing world. Discussing many of the most pressing diseases and public health issues effecting these regions, this book provides global health scholars and practitioners with a detailed analysis of the challenges faced in tackling these diseases, but also an integrated person-centred health-care approach by which these challenges may be met.

427,95 - 1.325,95 kr. Offering a unique, comprehensive, and critical introduction to increasingly visible social inequalities, this textbook examines the political and economic causes and cultural consequences of a stratifying system that allocates material resources and human dignity on the basis of private profit and labor exploitation.Mapping Inequality in an Era of Neoliberalism foregrounds capitalism as the major source of the power relations in the United States, as a class system that serves the dominant vector of inequality and sets the parameters of social mobility. The book starts with "racialized" capitalist power and shows how this power is constituted in structures of opportunity and constraint, using ethnographic accounts to "flip the script" to show how individuals in the class structure construct identities.Providing students tools for understanding, Valocchi engagingly introduces many of the crucial concepts in this area of sociology - power, opportunity structures, ideology, social and cultural capitals, and intersectional class identities - connecting them together as part of a uniquely critical approach.

- Recruitment, Reliability and Repeated Exchange: An Analysis of Urban Social Networks and Labour Circulation
450,95 kr. Originally published in 1996, Workers' Dilemmas analyses the management skills of those with least resources, the women of the urban poor, and finds that there is an abundance of evidence on the high levels of managerial competence within this group. It is information which has largely been hidden from history. This study of poor women's involvement in the world of work corrects this missing record. For over a century (1850-1960s), women and children travelled from their urban homes in the East End of London to work in the hop picking fields of Kent and Hampshire. The scale of the annual migration and the complexity of neighbourhood and household organization it required to provide this volume of labour have escaped the literature. Drawing on a variety of historical records and on oral history, this book explores the high level of management and occupational skills possessed by the urban poor in their construction of household survival strategies. Above all this book highlights the key entrepreneurial role played by women in this labour market and the importance of the financial support provided by this regular seasonal labour for household survival.Workers' Dilemmas provides a fresh look at how work patterns, family structure and community networks interrelate and in the process challenges accepted ideas in the wider fields of anthropology and the sociology of work.

- Legal and Economic Aspects
1.365,95 kr. The book explores the role of public market actors in sustainable and circular economy innovation and financing. The shift to a circular economy requires active innovation, alongside radical changes in law, finance and policy considerations, since regulation is often tightly connected with the assumption of a linear model of consumption. Finance is crucial in creating sustainable and circular economy markets and innovations: public finance is important from the perspective of seeing the state as an engine for promoting sustainable innovations, but private funds are also required. Legislative initiatives for promoting repairs have been proposed or adopted in the EU, US and in Australia, representing remarkable steps forward but still leaving many obstacles without legislative intervention. This book examines circular economy regulation and policy on a comprehensive, general level, as well as assessing the regulatory possibilities of promoting the right to repair. Promotion of circular economy innovations as well as changing the practices and changing consumer patterns towards a more comprehensive adoption of CE are discussed from perspectives of legal, social and moral norms. The book critically evaluates current legislative reforms and assesses existing barriers to the circular economy and innovation in intellectual property law, consumer law and competition law.Providing an in-depth analysis of this dynamic field, geared towards reconsidering both existing and prospective policies and regulatory regime, the book makes recommendations for solutions to legislative barriers. It is an indispensable resource for both researchers and practitioners working at the intersections of markets, innovations and sustainability.

It focuses on individual differences in female career development, from early adolescence through young adulthood. Rather than constructing a general model of career development, the authors use the interplay between theory and observation to build networks of patterns demonstrating the long-term consequences for adult women's career involvement, their educational levels, their family commitments, and their social networks.Throughout their investigation the authors interpret individuals' patterns as characterizing processes that underlie women's differential development. They illustrate that a research strategy oriented toward pattern analysis and related methodology reveals information that is generally obscured in more traditional variable-oriented designs. They also argue that a pattern approach is particularly suited to the tenets of modern interactionism, which provides the theoretical foundation of the study.
