Joseph Levy leads a quiet life in rural Wheaton Arizona. Retired from a long career in psychiatric research and practice, he reads, writes, and walks in the mountains and hills near the Native reservation. His quiet life ends, however, when a dental crown replacement causes trouble just before meeting an internet date in California. Thus begins a year of back-to-back nightmare infections, a drug overdose, and two failed relationships. At every step, Levy is confronted by matters of life and death, love and hate, faith and doubt, trust and betrayal. Most of all, he faces what it means to be sick and to be healthy. He prays to his God, relies on his friends, examines his dreams, and entrusts his psyche to a new therapist.Joseph Levy Escapes Death is a tale of perseverance in the face of adversity. Strassman uses several lenses to view Levy's life: medical, psychoanalytic, and religious-both Buddhist and Jewish. Pathos and humor fill the tale, while enlightening detours examine the Holocaust, cardiovascular physiology and microbiology, and Jewish-Christian relations.

  • - W.A. Mozart and THE MAGIC FLUTE
    af Michael Besack
    408,95 kr.

The Magic Flute has elicited a wide range of interpretations. From simple fairy tale to Masonic allegory, every meaning seems to have been explored. Yet the mystery remains. Mozart himself was less than helpful, leaving only inconsequential accounts of the work's conception. His untimely death, on December 5th 1791, a couple of months after the premiere has fueled additional controversies. The composer's personal letters, in which The Magic Flute is mentioned, contain mostly trivial reports of first impressions. They describe the reaction of the Viennese public and deal with comments made by contemporary musicians. Antonio Salieri, the Viennese Court's Kappelmeister, was highly supportive. Count Carl von Zinzendorf, a shrewd observer of the local operatic scene, was less than enthusiastic. "The music and the decorations are pretty," he wrote, "the rest an unbelievable farce." He did, however, mention that the crowds were huge. The Magic Flute has always been popular, but does that make it a popular opera? The dramatic vehicle assembled by Mozart is hardly a farce. The Queen of the Night is a witch and Sarastro a Mason - this much is clear, even to the uninitiated. In The Magic Flute they are at odds over Pamina's abduction by Sarastro: a theme thoroughly explored in Greek legends of Persephone. Held captive in the realm of the dead - to which the masonic Temple figuratively corresponds - Persephone stands for the magic powers of generation and renewal that Hades holds hostage in his subterranean kingdom. In the revolutionary climate of 18th century Europe, these powers were again needed for a reseeding of the hidden order. But the hermetic Temple, where the King and Queen reign, is not that easily reconstructed. Genius is not always enough where magic is the intended practice.

  • - A Wayfaring Counselor's Rendering of The Seven Interior Records
    af Raymond Bart Vespe
    223,95 kr.

The Chuang Tzu is a principal text of the ancient Spiritual tradition of Chinese Taoism. It is a collection of illustrative tales in thirty-three chapters recorded over two thousand years ago and which has since undergone hundreds of translations, commentaries and adaptations. The first seven Inner Chapters/Nei P’ien of The Chuang Tzu text are attributed to Chuang Chou/Tzu, the serene/ubiquitous/Master, and are rendered here as the Interior Records. Nei P’ien tales are lively portrayals of how individual beings manage to find their truth, freedom and happiness at a time in Chinese history of rampant bloody internecene warfare between rulers of separate feudal states vying for hegemony. The exquisitely crafted, and often outrageously and humorously expressed, characterizations of the circumstantially embedded lives of common creatures, fabulous animals, mythological beings, divine immortals, legendary ancients and a vast array of human beings ranging from Spiritual masters and skillful artisans to tyranical rulers and insane recluses; and even including Lao Tzu, Confucius and Chuang Tzu himself; are used as iconoclastic vehicles for imparting universal and perennial truths about what it is to be a True Human Being through both the Heavenly equalizing and transcending of, and the Earthly accepting and flowing with, the vicissitudes of natural instincts, human relationships and worldly affairs. The present work is an original rendering of the tales in the seven Interior Records/Nei Pien. The psychotherapeutically-oriented commentaries given for each of the tales are not only useful for professionals practicing psychotherapy, but also for anyone interested in truly and Soulfully living a more Spiritually awakened, natural, free and happy human life.

  • - And Other Stories
    af Ho Lin
    218,95 kr.

A modern woman adrift in modern China. Would-be lovers connected and separated by random chance. A drunken dissident and his less-then-happy minder. A researcher of war atrocities who must come to grips with her own family tragedies. A princess of a kingdom that no longer exists. Actors placed at the service of comedies and tragedies, depending on a filmmaker’s whim… These are the characters that populate Ho Lin’s short story collection China Girl. In its nine tales, China Girl documents the collisions between East and West, the power of myth and the burden of history, and loves lost and almost found. The stories in this collection encompass everything from contemporary vignettes about urban life to fable-like musings on memories and the art of storytelling. Wide-ranging and playful, China Girl is a journey into today’s Asia as well as an Asia of the imagination.

VERSION EN LANGUE ANGLAISE INTITULEE "THE BLUE NOTE".
