143,95 kr. Plenty of Water is a collection that though in many ways charts personally the biography of the writer from childhood to mature adulthood, its breadth of experience means probably it has something in it for everyone. Its themes are the stuff that literature is made of, for example, death, anger, love, philosophical reflection and spiritual rebirth. It is a collection that places traditional forms among freer forms and so will appeal both to traditionalists and those who prefer a more contemporary voice. Essentially, it is an exploration of one man's past and the realisation that having learned from the past, to move on requires the resolution to begin again.

128,95 kr. This tender and unusual modern love story, written in a style peppered with literary allusions and riddles, is Russian novelist, Masha Spivak's first foray into English. Katia, born in the old USSR, has two dreams: Love, and the Freedom of the West. Although already married, she wants to marry a foreigner and embarks in the 90s on a passionate affair with a Dutchman, only to be used by him. Then in 2009 her husband leaves her for a younger, bustier piece of eye-candy and she is alone - husbandless, childless and in Moscow. A recuperative trip to the States to visit her oldest friend, Dora, who emigrated in the early 90s, leads to Katia finding true and mutual love with her best friend's husband. Katia ends up lost in a moral labyrinth, trying to cope with her ethical dilemma as she fights her love for Lev. At the same time, she supports another good friend Vava, who dies unexpectedly quickly of cancer, while reflecting on the memories of her indomitable grandmother. The finale blends past, present and future, with plans for murder and suicide, before Katia learns what is most important in life and what true freedom means. 173,95 kr. 'Keep It Dark' might change the way you look back on the past. It is certainly a novel which defies genre. In 1964 when he is seven, Tommy sees his Uncle Jack sobbing copiously - and, as he grows up, spends the rest of his life finding out the reasons for Uncle Jack's tears. Tommy's odyssey takes him to Scotland, to Spain, to Poland and to Russia as he gradually peels away the layers of the past and discovers all that has been kept dark. He also learns about himself and copes with a tumultuous private life while piecing together his uncle's wartime experiences. This novel juxtaposes scenes from modern life in the UK with horrific descriptions of war in Spain, in Stalingrad during the Second World War, the Holocaust and then the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. But it is not a war story: it's about lost love, the past, politics, fatherhood, betrayal, memory and even language itself. The strength and endurance of the human spirit shines through. It is an ambitious pan-European novel packed with literary allusions, but it tells a very simple human story about love and loss, suffering and redemption, and human resilience in the face of evil. It's a serious novel, but full of humour and jokes, and is an emotive story of lives blighted by history and separation which works on different levels. The juxtapositions of the chapters from Tommy's life with those from the past throw up some interesting and unexpected parallels. The structure of the whole novel is unique - reminiscent of 'Catch 22' and 'Small Island' - but very different from either. As Tommy himself might put it, "If you wanna get technical, and believe me, sunshine, I always DO wanna get technical, this is a bildungsroman that turns out to be a kunstlerroman. Un-bleeding-believable!" Nominated for the Goldsmiths Prize 2013. Check out our other books at www.dogstailbooks.co.uk
