The 36th Infantry division saw intense combat in World War One - the story of their training and battles in France is enwoven with rich anecdotes and details of the conflict.Trained in Texas at Camp Bowie, much of the Corps' exercises were orientated around the realities of the Western Front: digging trenches, bayonet practice, and use of the rifle. The arrival of the fresh units of American troops in France in the autumn of 1917 is eye-opening; much of the front was in poor condition, worn down by more than three years of stagnant warfare and horrific losses. The 36th and other divisions invigorated the Allied war effort; their enthusiasm and determination, and their solidarity with the local French citizens, gave hope that victory was near.Yet the 36th and their companion divisions would fight for over a year: the new technology introduced to the front is described, as is the emergence of the Spanish Flu pandemic. The German army mounted a dogged defense, yet their ebbing resources and sheer manpower of the Allies made their situation ever more difficult. Amid the chaos of the front lines, German prisoners are taken on several occasions, with many appearing relieved and glad of their capture. The author, Captain Ben H. Chastaine, accompanies his narrative with some forty photographs, allowing the reader to better visualize the events he evocatively describes.

In these engaging lectures, William Ralph Inge shares his views on religion, and the philosophy with which he approached belief.Inge was popular in the USA for his novel approach and serene discussions of religious topics. He was a Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, and worked as a priest in the Anglican church. These lectures are a good introduction to his views: that spiritual experience and an emotional connection to God and to Christ are more important than an authoritative presence. Inge sought to emphasize how the personality of Biblical figures, both in the Old and New Testament, offered a way for readers to relate to the narratives of the scriptures.Several of Inge's ideas are related to neo-Platonism, which itself is an evolution of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato's views. The author is also well-acquainted with modern philosophy, which he energetically reconciles with the principles of the Christian believer. The final essay concerns the problems of sin; how sinfulness is treated both historically and in modern Christianity is discussed at length, and its interplay with moral values and shifting attitudes.

Land of the Burnt Thigh tells the story of two sisters from a comfortable family in the Eastern United States, braving great perils to settle in the West. This book tells a simple yet inspiring tale of the hardships and adversity encountered by women in the pioneer culture of the 19th century. South Dakota was one of the States newly populated by adventurous peoples wishing to settle the great Western expanse. At the time, the federal government allowed settlers to keep a parcel of land for their own on the condition that they remained resident for eight consecutive months. The adverse weather, consisting of snowstorms and blowing sands, tests the ability of the women who must endure these months in a spartan wooden shack. As both a eye-opening tale of overcoming adversity, and as a historical snapshot into the history of the westward expansion, Land of the Burnt Thigh excels.

113,95 kr. Principia Ethica is G. E. Moore's outstanding treatise of moral philosophy, wherein the philosopher posits that what is 'good' is indefinable, while demonstrating the fallacy of naturalism.Upon its original publication in 1903, this text received strong reception within academia for its convincing and clearly stated views. Moore firmly believed that moral values could not be based upon a simple knowledge, but instead from rigorous and intuitive experience of life's pleasures - beholding beauty, enjoying friendships, and taking pleasure in activities. In this book, Moore convinces readers of his argument with a series of expositions which are today held as advancing the field of moral philosophy.Influential in 20th century philosophy, this work was praised by Moore's contemporary Bertrand Russell and others in the scholarly community. For the student or enthusiast of modern moral philosophy, the Principia Ethica is vital reading. This edition presents the original text in full, with no abridgement made.

113,95 kr. The KKK's early history from its formation to its first disbandment is revealed with astonishing detail - writing in 1905, the author includes eyewitness accounts from those alive at the time.Following the American Civil War, the emancipation of black Americans occurred - the peoples formerly owned by plantation owners and farmers were accorded freedom, citizenship and rights as citizens of the United States. However, a segment of the population were unhappy with the emancipation of the enslaved - a desire for white domination led many, particularly in the Deep South, to perpetrate violence, mischief and murder. In the southern states, six former officers of the Confederate States of America formed the Ku Klux Klan. Intentionally shrouding the initiation ceremonies, doctrines and customs in mystery, the group was formed to amuse its members and attract public curiosity. Only later, as the group gained in membership and perpetrated violent and murderous acts, did their white hoods and rituals acquire notoriety and become synonymous with white supremacy and menace against the black minority. This book details the formation and progress of the 1st Klan, which operated between the years 1865 and 1871. Authored in 1905, it benefits from eyewitness accounts; at the time, the KKK's first appearance was within living memory, thought a curious event firmly confined to the past. However, a decade after Fleming published this book the KKK was revived, becoming far larger than before.Although overshadowed by later events, histories such as Fleming's shed light on an era of upheaval. Backlash against emancipation was anticipated, and the KKK was not the only extra-judicial group of its kind; although such organizations successfully intimidated many blacks into departing politics, laws and crackdowns by the government contained the organization, albeit temporarily.

98,95 kr. Krishnamurti's profound early work of spiritualism displays great wisdom attuned to matters of higher contemplation.Demonstrating a precocious ability to instil and guide others with spiritual wisdom, Jiddu Krishnamurti was twelve when he first authored this primer on gaining knowledge. The book is not an attempt at conversion, but is instead a meditation upon wholesome, guiding principles that anyone who desires spiritual harmony should aspire to. Krishnamurti urges aspiring spiritualists to be honest with themselves. If they are determined, and have the inner wealth to embark upon such a journey, they will go far. Eliminating material desires, behaving properly with good manners and conduct, and regarding other human beings with compassion and love are explained as crucial tenets. Obstacles to attainment, both physical and mental, are also explained. Upon publishing this work, Jiddu Krishnamurti gained renown as a prodigy in spiritual thought. The curiosity of a wise master emerging whilst merely a child sparked great interest within and outside Krishnamurti's home nation of India. At the Feet of the Master asserts that while only a boy, Jiddu Krishnamurti received insight through a series of impressions gained from an unnamed master. A refreshing text certain to provide relief amid the maddening complexity of modern life, At the Feet of the Master not only marks the beginning of Krishnamurti's life as a spiritual teacher, but the commencement of countless spiritual journeys undertaken by its readers.
