The Pelican's Brood is a multigenerational novel capturing the end of an era of privilege where white men ruled, and women often paid the price. In this case, the price is paid by Jill, the mother of Seth Winslow. Seth recounts the pleasures and sins of the fathers from the hospital bed where he recovers from what he describes as 'enraged fits of paranoid hysteria'. Rich in detail, both mythical and autobiographical, Evans Lansing Smith unfolds a complex search for meaning, weaving tragedy with comedy, and the literal with the psychological.

These poems follow Ezra Pound's mandate to "Make It new" by offering adaptations of haiku stanzas, in lyric and narrative sequences, revolving around the eternal themes of love, death, and nature. Evans Lansing Smith is Chair and Core Faculty of the Mythological Studies Program at the Pacifica Graduate Institute, in Santa Barbara, CA. He is the author of nine books and numerous articles on comparative literature and mythology. In the 1970s, he traveled with the late Joseph Campbell on tours of Northern France, Egypt, and Kenya. He has taught at colleges and universities in Switzerland, Maryland, Texas, and California, where he lives with his beloved partner, Cheryle Van Scoy. He is currently preparing a series of novels, and a second book of poems, for publication.
