Then, he studied four additional years to become a Doctor of Chiropractic which he practiced for thirty-one years while serving in 1971 as president of the Florida Chiropractic Association. During this time, he pursued his powerful passion for spirituality and theology by ordination to the diaconate in 1979. In 1994, he gained his Doctor of Ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation. In 1996, Dr. Carroll initiated a 15-year career of preaching over 200 parish retreats throughout the United States. IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, the Catholic Church made an epoch-defining magisterial, philosophical, and theological turn from an "ahistorical" methodological "habitus" toward a praxis-based methodology that interprets "historical reality," especially the reality of the poverty, as a locus theologicus. This book shows how the development of this turn began in pre-conciliar Western Europe, next flourished during the pontificates of John XXIII and Paul VI and at Vatican Council II, then became vital to liberation theology in post-conciliar Latin America, and eventually grew into the contemporary paradigm of "practical theology." The book chronicles the contributions of a range of twentieth-century Catholic philosophers, theologians, and members of the Magisterium who created and advanced this turn across Western Europe, Latin America, and North America. Today, the turn has been additionally developed in Africa and Asia, and the author looks forward to learning from additional Catholic theological voices from those important global regions. DR. BOB PENNINGTON, a native of West Virginia, grew up in Gainesville, Florida and attended the University of Florida in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Political Science. However, after a mission-trip to the isolated mountain town of La Cucarita in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Pennington transferred to Wheeling Jesuit University to finish his undergraduate degree with a focus on the political and civic aspect of mission work. Dr. Pennington then earned a master's degree in Theology from Xavier University, followed by a Ph.D. in Practical Theology from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Pennington is currently an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, specializing in Ethics, at Mount St. Joseph University. When not working on writing and speaking projects, he enjoys spending time with his wife Cassandra, and with his two children Luke and Leo.

In this wonderful book, Father Michael J. Gillgannon ("Padre Miguel") has shared wonderful stories about his work alongside the people of Bolivia and about his encounters with teachers, artists, theologians, and others. He has also recounted his experience both with the anti-democratic military dictatorship of General Banzer and with the democratic presidency of Evo Morales. (President Morales was elected as the first Native-American president ever of Bolivia, a country whose overwhelming majority is Native American and who in turn suffered for approximately 500 years under European and European-American domination.) In particular, Father Gillgannon's Parish of San Antonio de Padua in the Andes mountains comes alive with his description of colorful annual indigenous fiestas of life, community, and faith. The parish school grows, and its youth encourage him and his close colleague Maryknoll Sister Joan Mury to initiate an extraordinary campus ministry at the State university of La Paz. At age 79, Father Gillgannon returned to Kansas City. There, through engagement with Hispanic Ministry in the United States, he continued to raise ethical questions and to work for social change.

In July 1944, delegates from forty-four allied nations gathered at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The meeting resulted in the creation of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development ("IBRD"), and the International Monetary Fund ("IMF"). This book demonstrates that current Bretton Woods Institutions' ("BWI") policies must be fundamentally redesigned, since many are archaic, and others are counter-productive to integral sustainable development in the current global economy. Further, the book argues that the dominant nations in the BWI have forced their political agendas on the rest of the world, while hiding behind the veil of these multilateral global financial institutions. The book concludes that the BWI, due to their lending policies and governing structures, have restrained authentic global development. It also proposes alternative strategies for authentic sustainable development through other multilateral global institutions.PROFESSOR MARK J. WOLFF is Professor of Law at Saint Thomas University School of Law in Miami, Florida. He also serves as Legal Counsel and Board Member, Malta Projects of Southeastern Florida, Inc., an affiliate of the American Association of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. In addition, he is General Counsel and member of the Board of Directors of Pax Romana-USA, and of the Board of Directors of the Human Rights Institute at St. Thomas University, as well as a Faculty Advisor for the Center for Ethics at St. Thomas University. He formerly served as an International Vice President of Pax Romana / International Catholic Movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs, and as Main Representative of Pax Romana at United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He also founded and is Director of the St. Thomas University School of Law's United Nations Externship Program, at United Nations Headquarter in New York City. Currently, he as an Adviser to the Permanent Mission of the Order of Malta to the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In the past, he has served as a member and head of delegations on behalf of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta at United Nations World Conferences and International Consultative Conferences, and he has addressed the plenary sessions of these Conferences and the General Assembly of the United Nations.
