Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948) with his wife Mary were highly influential historians in the first half of the 20th century. Their works had a major impact on American historians. This book was written in 1921 and is still one of the most interesting books on the History of the United States. It was originally written as a textbook, and consequently is a good introduction to American History from its founding to the 19th Century. It discusses history in a mixture of a chronological and thematic manner, and therefore offers the reader insights into events that one may not have otherwise connected. It contains an index, footnotes, tables of populations and Presidents, copious illustrations and a Topical Syllabus.

This is a relatively short book, published in 1899, showing some exquisite examples of pen drawing, and instructing the reader on how to produce them. Maginnis was a celebrated architect, and his love of buildings comes through in the text. The tone of the book can be a bit dated, but that adds to its historical interest, and the instruction is as true today as it was when the text was written.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips was published in both the United States and the United Kingdom 1934. Such is its popularity that it has been adapted into two films and two television series.Mr Chips is a much loved schoolteacher at Brookfield, a fictional boys' English public (private in US English) boarding school. It is a sentimental book showing how he overcomes his own mediocre academic record and his profound shyness to become a tremendous educator. It also depicts the sweeping social changes that Mr Chips experiences. He begins his tenure at Brookfield in 1870, at the beginning of the Franco-Prussion War and covers Victoria's death and along with her the social order, and the devastating impact of war on British society, with countless old masters and schoolboys dying on the battlefield in World War I. Mr Chips dies just as Adolf Hilter rises to power.This version also includes the book "To you, Mr Chips" which includes an autobiographical chapter and several additional Mr Chips stories.

This delightful children's storybook, written in 1952 by Carley Dawson is fully illustrated. It tells the story of twelve-year-old Chris, who entered Mr. Wicker's shop to inquire about a job for his friend. However, he was so intrigued by Mr. Wicker that he took the job himself. So began an adventure beyond his wildest dreams, full of magic and adventure.

Crome Yellow, is Huxley's first novel, published in 1921. It is a British manor satire where almost nothing happens - even less than normal for this genre. The characters are immaculately presented and manage to express immense profundity in tiny conversations. The writing is wonderful and each turn of phrase is a gem. Huxley's genius shines through the book. It is hilarious, wry and erudite. The Burning Wheel is Huxley's first collection of Poetry, published in 1916 before any of his novels. He was not allowed to fight in the Great War due to his very poor eyesight and so it is unsurprising that many of the thirty poems in this collection deal with light, sight and war. These poems show the Young Huxley at his most optimistic, even sentimental, although this is tempered by a second voice, that of an ironic modern commentator.The Defeat of Youth and Other Poems is Huxley's second book, published in 1918. There are thirty five poems and it starts with a poem that a contemporary called "the century's most successful sonnet sequence, better than Auden's or Edna St. Vincent Millay's." Mortal Coils is a collection of five short stories published in 1922, all of which are highly amusing and brilliantly written by the young Huxley.
