When fleeing her war-ravaged home, a young girl brings four magic seeds to help her family on their difficult journey Dounia loves her home in Aleppo, Syria, and all of its wonderful smells, sights, and traditions. But when war breaks out, Dounia and her grandparents must flee their home to find safety. Before they go, their neighbor reads their future in a cup of coffee and sees a long, difficult journey ahead, and a blue house waiting at the end. With only a bird carved from Aleppo soap and four little baraké seeds in her pocket, Dounia and her family face dangerous waters, a camp surrounded by barbed wire, and unfriendly soldiers. Remembering the ancient knowledge that baraké seeds ward off evil, Dounia pulls one from her pocket to use for each of the threats her family faces. Magically, the seeds help the family along their way, until they finally find the blue house prophesied by their neighbor. Elegant, eye-catching artwork beautifully illustrates one young girl's strength and resilience as she takes an active part in her own destiny.

"In this (almost wordless) picture book, the sole character, a crow, finds themselves in a new and completely empty space. With nothing to do, boredom sets in, and the crow decides to take matters into their own hands. The crow starts to decorate, adding a bed, a bookshelf, a lamp, and even a potted plant. Everything is placed neatly in the corner of the room, and slowly the corner begins to reflect the life and personality of its occupant. These furnishings help, but it's not enough. The crow spends time watering the plant, reading, sleeping. However, in the end, there's still not much to do but stare at the wall. "Hello?" the crow calls out. But nobody answers. The crow wonders what else they can add to the space to make it their own. They start small, using a small piece of yellow chalk. The reader watches the plant grow as time passes, and the crow draws squares and rectangles on the walls, filling the space with beautiful, glowing geometric patterns. The room fills with colour as the crow thrives in a space complete with wall art, a healthy plant growing taller, and music for dancing. But something is still missing. So, after thinking on it, the crow adds one last thing -- a window! "Hello?" the crow asks once again. And this time, they are greeted in return by a passerby on the other side of the window."--

"Princess Pru's life was practically perfect. She had two loving dads, an ostrich named Orville, and three royal tarantulas. And then one day, a ghastly ogre with crusty toenails and goopy ears moves into the house on the hill. At first, Pru sees the ogre as a nuisance: he disrupts her royal rock band practices, weekly tickle tag games, and even the hide-and-seek tournament. The townspeople are also suspicious--everyone knows ogres hate seeing people have fun. But Pru starts to wonder if the ogre is just lonely and asks her dads, the kings, if she can throw him a "Welcome to the Kingdom" party, which her over-protective parents refuse. As alarming reports about the ogre's behavior roll in--he's spotted buying cupcakes, craft supplies, and balloons--the people of the kingdom are terrified. When they receive ominous notes, which readers, like Pru, will recognize as invitations, the kings imagine the ogre plans to put them all in a stew. But Pru heads for the house on the hill at the appointed time, where she's greeted by the ogre for a party. He simply wanted to make friends. With her courage, Pru clears the way for the others to join the fun, and they spend the afternoon playing games and eating ogre-licious cupcakes with Oggy the ogre, who becomes Pru's fast friend. This heartwarming, humorous story about genuine friendship shows Pru accepting Oggy as he is, ear goop and all, and nudges the reader to do the same and not judge based on appearances."--

"Today, Amik is expecting her beaver cousins for a special visit, and she can't wait to show them her home. But as the visitors arrive, Amik suddenly realizes that her little sister, Nishiime, has disappeared. Where could she have gone? As Amik shows her cousins some of her favorite haunts, the reader also learns how beavers help all the other animals in the forest: they cut down poplar trees so deer have easier access to the leaves, they create canals in streambeds that fish need to swim in during the winter months, and they build dams that form shallow pools for otters to swim in with their babies. Along the way, each animal shows its gratitude by saying "Meegwetch" (thank you) to Amik. Meanwhile, Nishiime, who can be seen hiding in the illustrations throughout the story, finally appears, explaining that she was feeling scared and shy about meeting other beavers from far away. It doesn't take long until Nishiime is comfortable with her cousins, asking many questions and planning how she will one day visit them."--

"At first glance, this is a simple and fun pirate story. An orange tabby pirate is out at sea with their trusty -- if a little crabby -- first mate, and everything is right with the world. Until... Splash! A wave crashes over-board and something gets in the pirate's eye. A trip to the floppy-eared eye doctor brings solutions in the form of (you guessed it!) an eye patch and lollipops! Soon enough, the two companions are back on the high seas where they belong. But there's more to this story than first meets the eye. See? (Har har.) The story plays with only two words -- but includes the variations that can be found within those two words: "I" can also be "eye," "aye," and the letter "I." While "sea" can also be "see" and the letter "C"! Very young kids will be engaged by a simple and clever pirate story, while at the same time learning the concept of a homophone in a practical, straightforward way. On the final page, readers discover that this charming and whimsical story was played out by a child with toys in their bathtub -- a fun ode to creativity, imagination, and one of the key themes in a book of homonyms: the power of perspective."--

"Once there was a bear who lived in the forest and did all the regular bear things. But as the world and the forest around him changes, he finds that it's becoming more and more difficult to be a bear. So he decides that the sensible thing to do would be to learn how to be human. After all, humans don't seem to be having any trouble in the changing world. With a little girl as his teacher, the bear learns all the important human stuff and heads off for the city to try out his new skills ... but nothing goes as planned. So, back in the forest, the little girl suggests that maybe bears should be less like humans, and humans should be more like bears. And with the bear as her teacher, she begins to learn all the important bear stuff, ultimately discovering that the Earth is a place of giving, where all living things breathe together."--

"Who hasn't wished for a superpower? Maybe it's to be able to regenerate like Wolverine, or fly like Shazam? How about the ability to turn invisible like Violet Parr, or have superstrength like the Hulk? What about being able to control minds like the Scarlet Witch, or even be immortal like Klaus Hargreeves? Well, grab your cape and tights, because scientists are working to replicate many of the superpowers we see in comics and movies and on television. Some are already a reality! Using popular superheroes and their powers as a starting point for imagining what could be, BECOMING BIONIC explores how science is constantly searching for and discovering new ways to augment the human body and the human experience. BECOMING BIONIC covers six aspects of superhero performance: Super Parts, Super Flight, Super Sight, Super Strength, Super Brains, and Super Survival. In each section, an illustrated timeline takes readers back in time for a fascinating look at inventions of the past. For example, in the Super Parts section, we begin with the Cairo Toe, a jointed prosethetic big toe that dates all the way back to 950-710 BCE, and end at 2012 when scientists built a "bionic man" out of 27 engineered parts. In the second spread of each section, readers zip ahead to read about some of today's amazing science that is already in use. In the Super Sight section, for example, we learn about a technology that uses radio signals to "see" through walls and can be used to uncover earthquake victims. A final spread blasts readers forward to find out what the future might have in store, such as the crustacean-inspired exoskeletons that give wearers extra strength with the help of artificial muscles that are described in the Super Strength section. Finally the book concludes with some bigger picture thoughts and questions that prompt readers to think critically about the innovations they've just read about - should science abide by a moral code and who determines what that is?"--

"Twelve year old Justine's parents are recently divorced and she and her little sister, Bea, go back and forth between their parents homes in Montreal. Because her mother (whose anxiety manifests itself as the need to control) believes that their father and beloved half-sister are a bad influence on Justine and Bea, she enlists Justine's aid in collecting evidence that would lead to sole custody being granted to her. Justine goes along with this plan, and buys into her mother's view of her father at first, but when she crafts an outright lie for her mother's court case, she starts to question her mother's--and her own--behaviour. When called upon to testify in court in front of a judge who actually cares about Justine and Bea, Justine is able to summon the courage to tell the truth, no matter what the consequences. The book explores the widespread phenomenon of parental alienation, which the DSM-5 calls 'child psychological abuse'"--
