263,95 kr. "Here is your journey of George Washington Carver, the shy, unassuming scientific genius of Tuskegee Institute, and white businessman Bob Barry, Grady Porter, and Tom Huston--through the letters they wrote to each other and to others who joined them on a quest to grow the peanut industry in the South by understanding and solving the problems faced by farmers. The letters document a fascinating early example of cooperation between farmers, private business, university researchers, and government policymakers in the early twentieth century. Even more importantly, the story offers eloquent testimony to a lasting interracial friendship in the segregated south--so much more than peanuts"--Back cover.

Its heroine, Gabi, shares in the activities of five-year-olds everywhere. She dances, she pretends, she dresses up, she helps with the baby. Her exuberence about her life bounces off every page, and the enthusiasm and warmth of her family surround her, and the reader, with love.

218,95 kr. Many people have interesting childhoods, eccentric relatives, go off to college, and set out as adults to make their way in the world. Few people are as keenly observant or can write as compellingly about these experiences as does Helen Blackshear in this inviting memoir. Here we are invited into extended Southern families and are given glimpses of a world that no longer exists - of genteel women's schools, of college towns when they were small communities, of first car trips and first suitors and a young girl's coming of age. The author recalls us back to her world in the early to mid-twentieth century, and reveals in the process her own generous spirit and wise heart.

188,95 kr. The life of Stephan Sure, born John Gregory Suhor, began serenely and ended violently in New Orleans. He was both participant and voyeur in the city's middle class, upper class, and gay cultures, yet never found a true home in any of them, nor during his years in Florida, the Midwest, or his sporadic hitchhikes to nowhere. Throughout, Sure kept with him three notebooks comprising The Book of Rude: short lines ranging from insults and puns to social commentaries and cries for help. Born from these rude witticisms is this collection of poetry and short stories that in total represent the far-ranging experiences of this insightful and complicated man. His father, Charles Suhor, gathered his writings after Sure's death for this unique volume.

218,95 kr. More than a hundred men and women in various aspects of law enforcement were interviewed for this unusual profile. The interviews were all conducted in Alabama, but the insights and experiences are common to the criminal justice system throughout the United States. Lofton's subjects ranged from the veteran lone officer in the storefront police department in Town Creek to the college-educated major in the big-city Mobile Police Department. There are stories from county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and peripheral views from prosecutors, criminal court judges, bailiffs, and probation officers. The goal was to find out what the men and women working in criminal justice thought and remembered about their jobs, which are among the most difficult and sometimes controversial in modern society.

163,95 kr. Arthur G. Worthy was raised in Marengo County, Alabama, had served in the military, and was a student at then-Alabama State College when he had a chance opportunity to become one of the first black police officers in Montgomery. He consulted his wife Mildred and decided to take the job. The year was 1954, one year before Montgomery would make civil rights history in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Worthy found police work to be interesting and challenging. Though he later left the police department to teach school for a few years, he remained interested in law enforcement. By 1964, the United States Marshals Service was seeking to desegregate its ranks, and Worthy was nominated for a deputy marshal position in the Middle District of Alabama. He served with distinction in that job for twenty years. Among his memorable experiences were serving papers related to the Selma-to-Montgomery March, supervising the transport of deadly nerve gas, guarding foreign dignitaries and witnesses in federal trials, and investigating EEOC complaints.

218,95 kr. In the Midst of Life is a moving, evocatively described narrative of the patients and caregivers Charles Rose encountered as a hospice volunteer. It is also a perceptive account of his own journey into the world of the dying-a journey that in the end brings him, and us, more deeply and compassionately into the transitory world of our own lives.
