The book 25 to Life is based on Waulee Evans's twenty-five years as a corrections officer in the Department of Corrections and how he viewed it. Also, he will show you how jail affects both the inmate and the officer almost in the same way, and everything that can happen to an inmate can happen to an officer in jail. The minute you walk through the doors and down those halls, you could very well be the next recipient of some unpleasant attention or a life-changing situation. Nobody in jail is immune from violence, disrespect, or being injured. The officer is in just as much danger as the incarcerated person.

MLK Jr.'s Detroit Dream: Memoir of a Civil Rights Foot Soldier is an autobiography of an African American black girl who was indoctrinated into the civil rights movement at the age of eight when Dr. Martin L King Jr., the freedom icon, marched in Detroit during the summer of 1963. The memoir puts, in chronological order from a child's point of view, the events, major personalities, triumphs, and tragedies in American history from the time of the Detroit Dream March in 1963 until Dr. King's tragic death in 1968.This book was inspired by young children who were mesmerized by the oral recitation of author Sharon Elizabeth Sexton's memory of when Dr. King came to Detroit and delivered his first version of the "I Have a Dream" speech. "Children do like history if they feel they can be a part of it," Sexton discovered and put the story into written form as the memories came back while writing. Sexton realized that she and her baby boom generation of the 1950s went through a lot of life-changing history between the time Dr. King first talked about his dream for the children of America and his untimely death. In recent history, American youth are once again witnessing life-changing social circumstances. Many of the youth don't realize that their grandparents, who were part of the baby boom generation, were faced with similar issues. This book can be used by multiple generations to bring up similarities, talking points, generate conversations, and provide teaching moments that will bring the different generations of family, community, and nation together to talk about African American history and current events.

But now and then, I need to rattle off another verse.I wake up of a morning, and lying there in bed,Start putting words together, somewhere in my head.I might stop it if someone tells me they're no good,Or I might slash their tires, and write another book.

The tension between property and equality, as the Founders expressed it, or liberty and equality as commonly expressed today, has been a central issue for democracy since its beginning in Athens. The US founders addressed the problem with commitments to the protection of individual liberty and to equality of opportunity. Central to these commitments are private property rights and their enforcement, recognizing the diversity of individual interests and abilities and their rights to develop both as they choose. As James Madison put it in "The Federalist Papers," "the protection of the faculties (of men and their diversity, the original source of the rights of property) is the first object of government." That this is the greatest obstacle to a pursuit of a uniformity of interest as it would imply an equality of outcomes instead of opportunity. Thus, a political commitment to the pursuit of equality fosters continual questioning of its achievement and on what terms. In his new book, Property v. Equality--America's Enduring Political Rivalry, Mack Ott weaves the history of our democracy with the evolution of its political parties, the role of voting, its government and its institutions, with the central concern for the evolving tension of equal liberty with various and different levels of property. From the outset, Ott argues the problem of slavery presented deep moral and political problems. The importance of political compromise between the states to secure the adoption of the Constitution led the founders to put off abolition and settle initially for an end to importation of the enslaved in twenty years. Most states outlawed slavery well before 1860, but the end of slavery did not come easily. It was the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and his restoration of the Union that removed the biggest obstacle to liberty and equality. Ott explains that Lincoln also had a full agenda of other policies. Lincoln's "fair chance" aimed to provide Federal assistance to the emergence of greater equality. He successfully introduced three programs to enhance public welfare and the common good: assistance to develop roads and a federal highway system, the Homestead Acts to aid people to acquire property and residences at subsidized prices, and the Land Grant College program to assist states in developing institutions of higher education for young people. Lincoln's notion of a fair chance reflected his desire to expand the Federal role in promoting the common good and the enhancement of economic equality. The Civil War also brought to the center of political attention a practical obstacle to the achievement of balance between liberty and equality, according to Ott. This was the inability of federal revenue to provide a growing revenue base to support economic growth and intervention in major shocks, especially war. Except for a brief period during the Civil War, income taxation had not been available because it was viewed to be unconstitutional. In 1913, the Supreme Court ruled that direct taxation of citizens did not violate the Constitution. In the implementation of the Sixteenth Amendment, Congress allowed for progressive taxation--people of higher incomes would face higher tax rates than those with lower incomes. Lincoln laid the basis for an expanding Federal role in the economy and showed the way to progressively fund the Federal government. Perhaps the second major challenge to the pursuit of liberty and equality led to the election of Franklin Roosevelt. To confront the Great Depression, Roosevelt embarked on a major expansion in the Federal role in the American economy and control of much of the private sector. His success led to new debates over that role, in which liberty-versus-equality issues were central. With the death of Roosevelt and end of the Second World War, the political economy continued to expand the role of the government and to st

Inspiration for creativity can come from within yourself, thoughts, feelings, the inner world, or from the physical world, the outer world. The inspiration for the Illustrated Book of Halloween, Vol. I, came from my wife, Debra. She decorates the living room for every Holiday. New Years Eve, Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, July 4th, Halloween, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Her favorite, of course, is Halloween. She dresses as a witch on October 31st, cooks witch's stew for the neighbors, and makes sure the Trick-or-Treaters get special treats. After observing her numerous decorations of witches, skeletons, Jack-o-lanterns, rats, cats, and bats. I began to see images in my head. I needed a hobby anyway. I was tired of watching Mr. Commercial for twelves minutes of a half hour T.V. program. The result is The Illustrated Book of Halloween, Vol. I. Yes, I am a kitchen table artist.I hope it is a source of visual entertainment, an inspiration to craftsmen and women to create Halloween or seasonal artwork. It would be an excellent seasonal coffee tabletop book. Or you can take a page, frame it, and hang it on the wall.I hope you enjoy The Illustrated Book of Halloween, Vol. I as much as I did in its creation.

If God changed me, he can change anyone, if only you let him. See, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. And my life's journey proves that. I thought I was in control, but the path God took me down let me know that I (you) have to have Jesus as my (your) Lord and Savior. But that's if you want to go to heaven after this life here on earth. I lived just how I thought I wanted to live. But down the road I realized that I have a choice, even in my mess. I was not satisfied; something was missing, and the reason I knew that was because I was a backslider. I knew the difference between the two lives (saved and unsaved). It seemed like the more I lived like I wanted to live, the worse things got for me. But God. I remember that all I had was the Word of God. So I started to apply the Word of God to my everyday living. I started to seek his face. I already knew his Word, so I started to pray every day. Seeing that my prayers were being answered made me pray more and more. Then I started to believe again, and then I started to receive again. God had his hand on me the whole time I was out there. I stood on God's promises, and I still stand on them today, because God is not a man who would lie. Now I am a child of God, and I know I am a chosen one. If you let go and let God be the head of your life, he will change you too. Please believe me.

Being immortal from the outside sounds like a positive thing. But when you're the one that has to live an everlasting life with no end, watching everyone you have grown to love die, time after time, then, it becomes your curse. Throughout history, men have risen up to be heroes and villains. Somehow, there has always been a balance. At times evil seems to prevail. Like a swarm of locusts, it can be anywhere and everywhere, taking over all that is good. But somehow, good makes a comeback and evens the score. Being evil may be easy, but being good and righteous takes a lot of work and sacrifice. This story tells the tale of two men, Michael and Nathan, who are cursed with the burden of being the gatekeepers of good and evil. They pass away from the mortal realm, only to be resurrected as gods. The men are cursed by the gods, who watch them struggle through life as they persuade kings, queens, and warriors to fight for their cause, helping tilt the scale of history in their favor. Follow their trials and tribulations as they tell their side of the story throughout history. Witness their journey as they navigate famous historic battles all over modern-day Europe. Unbeknownst to them, their actions have laid the foundation of what the world is today. Nemesis explores the consequences of seeing the world in parallels of 'good versus evil' and being subjected to paths in life that may not be of one's choosing. Will Michael and Nathan be able to break free from the bonds placed on them by their gods? Or will their demise be their own making? Will it be heaven or hell on earth?

I'm Big, I'm Big by Jasmine Harding is a heartwarming children's book that tells the story of a little caterpillar who wants to be big like his animal friends. As children, we often feel the need to be bigger, stronger, or more popular to fit in. This book addresses these insecurities by teaching children to embrace their unique qualities and not to compare themselves to others.Through the eyes of the caterpillar, children will learn the importance of self-love and self-acceptance, as well as the lesson that size is not everything. The story emphasizes that what truly matters is the size of one's heart and the ability to form meaningful connections with others, which the little caterpillar learns on his journey. The book also highlights the importance of empathy and kindness. The animals in the story try to help the caterpillar understand his size and value, despite their different perspectives. It's a great reminder for both children and adults that everyone has different viewpoints, and it's important to be understanding and empathetic toward others. In the end, the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, showing that change is a part of life and that it's okay to grow and evolve. I'm Big, I'm Big is a wonderful book for children and adults alike, teaching important life lessons in a fun and engaging way.

I made this book in the hopes of being able to express what goes on through my mind in a digestible yet relatable manner. We go through life in such unique ways, and this book represents what I've personally experienced, summarized in a few words. I hope to connect with those around me with my writing or simply allow others who might feel or think similarly to know that there are others like themselves out there. We're not alone, we've never been alone, and we are always stronger together.

Pere was born into a middle-class family. His father was the chief priest of the community shrine. His creditors could not pay up. He struggled through life until his father arranged his marriage. Although this marriage was blessed with children, it was a tumultuous one. He became the Achilles tendon of the church that he built. He wished his parents were alive to see the difference between traditional religion and Christianity.

In Search of the Beanstalk is a memoir about the family history and life of Jack Griggs and was written to preserve some of his family's history by recounting some of the amusing events and episodes of their humble beginnings and their journey to self-sufficiency.The family ancestry hails back to Scotland and the Cherokees of North Carolina. Although they were "poor," the family persevered through many hardships, but they seemed to always see the humor in what would have seemed to be unbearable circumstances. Levity made many of them tolerable, and the stories were retold many times at family gatherings.Jack, despite the many obstacles he faced in his early life, grew up to be the first in his family to graduate from college and earn not one but two master's degrees along with becoming a successful public servant devoting forty years to law enforcement. The book covers his family background and life from birth through adulthood. Jack recounts his tumultuous childhood in and out of orphanages, almost constantly changing where and who he lived with during his early years. He attended five different high schools. He served in the United States Air Force and had many jobs in his life until he ultimately began his career in law enforcement culminating in his last two jobs as a police chief in California before his retirement. With a phenomenal memory for details, Jack shares many anecdotes about his life growing up and his law enforcement career.

Take Me to the RiversBoating the Rivers of America from Wisconsin to FloridaBoating down the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee-Tombigbee Rivers, and Mobile Bay to the Florida Intracoastal in the fall of 2018 might be described in retrospect as a series of near misses. The river conditions were extreme, characterized by the worst fall flooding in recorded history. And at the end of our trip, the strongest category 5 hurricane ever to make landfall, Hurricane Michael, engulfed us within its eye.Take Me to the Rivers chronicles my husband's and my fifteen-hundred-mile journey by boat to both remote and well-traveled parts of some of the greatest rivers of America. Setting out on a course to Punta Gorda, Florida, we began our river adventures on the Upper Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wisconsin, continuing all the way through St. Louis, Missouri. We then found ourselves in the wild and ruthless wilderness of the Mississippi River up to the junction of the Ohio River. We traveled up the Ohio to the Kentucky Lakes, where we rested for several days and got a glimpse of the elegant and pampered side of river boating. Continuing south, we entered remote areas that had yet to be charted in GPS. Traveling on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Rivers, through Mobile Bay, we finally arrived on the Florida Intracoastal. In October 2018, our trip was cut short abruptly and with finality in Panama City when Hurricane Michael destroyed our boat and our dreams of boating our way through retirement. The book is written as a series of everyday short stories--stories about the people we met and the rivers that tried to swallow us alive. With its in-depth descriptions, it provides interesting insights for Quimby's Guide travelers as well as for those who have only been able to dream of boating from Wisconsin to Florida. In addition, the uniqueness of the river people we met on this journey and the extreme river and weather conditions we lived through will make this book appealing to an adventurous and curious audience.Highlights that stand out in the author's mind include a 360-degree fascination with the Mississippi River bluffs, the World War that was averted with an LST-325 Navy warship, our only tourist trap destination in Hannibal, Missouri, the incredible spectacle of the St. Louis Arch, dining at Bobby's Fish Camp, the winners and losers along the Kentucky Lakes, the statue of the Mistaken Klansman, floating bollard mastery techniques, and Hurricane Michael in Panama City.As much as I loved writing about these and other stories, our close encounters with the people we met along the way are the lifeblood of the book. It was a matter of life and death on the rivers in the fall of 2018. Many people shared their lives with us on this journey; many people helped to save our lives--the lives of total strangers.
