153,95 kr. If there be any subject that can bring the multitudes to poetic expression it must certainly be war. This was definitely true of the First World War. Among its poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfrid Owen most assuredly rank at the top. Winner of the military cross, English Captain Siegfried Sassoon's poetry is heralded for its brutal realism and its satirizing of overly patriotic pro-war rhetoric. Wilfrid Owen would meet his mentor, Sassoon, at the Craiglockhart War Hospital and follow in Sassoon's footsteps in lyrically relating the horrors of trench life. Owen died just one week before the final armistice. His poems come to us in several collected volumes, the first of which is included in this anthology. Further poems by Ivor Gurney, Isaac Rosenberg, Vera Brittain, Rupert Brooke, Alan Seeger, Robert Graves, Charles Sorley, Edgell Rickword, and others, are gathered here in this anthology. Together these poems provide a diverse perspective of the war seen through the eyes of the people who faced it in service to their country. In sharp contrast to the great loss which produced it, these lines stand as an enduringly beautiful testament to the war to end all wars. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

128,95 kr. Archy, a New York City cockroach, and Mehitabel, a New York City alley cat, were characters created by "The Evening Sun" columnist Donald Robert Perry Marquis. The subject of hundreds of humorous poems and stories, Archy is portrayed as having been a free verse poet in a previous life who takes to writing stories and poems on an old typewriter at the office of a newspaper after everyone has gone home. Archy's best friend is the alley cat Mehitabel with whom the cockroach shares a series of daily adventures which serve as a satiric commentary on the daily life of New York City in the 1920s and 1930s. Archy's poems are notable for the fact that they don't use capital letters since as a cockroach he cannot simultaneously hold down the shift key while he hurls himself at the keys to type away on the old typewriter. Don Marquis's Archy and Mehitabel poems were first published as a collection in 1927. This edition reproduces that first collection and is printed on premium acid-free paper.

128,95 kr. African-American scholars have cited James Weldon Johnson's 1927 book of poems, "God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse" as one of the author's most notable works. Johnson, who is best known for his 1912 work, "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man", was an American writer and civil rights activist born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1871. As a leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Johnson helped to bring awareness to the problem of black lynching in America during the first part of the 20th century as well as other civil rights issues that people of color faced in America. A collection of eight poems, "God's Trombones" draws upon the tradition in the black church of drawing upon black folklore to preach the word of god. The title of the work has been described by Johnson as a metaphor for the powerfully persuasive nature of the vocal and rhetorical qualities of the sermons of a folk preacher. Immediately upon its publication "God's Trombones" would go on to achieve great critical acclaim in the black community further helping to establish Johnson as one of the principal figures of the Harlem Renaissance. Originally published in French as a series of essays in the magazine "L'Esprit nouveau (revue)" beginning in 1921, "Towards a New Architecture" by Le Corbusier was published as a book in 1923 and first translated into English in 1927. Le Corbusier's revolutionary approach to architecture became an instant classic and a highly influential work on the meaning and function of buildings and cities in the modern age. Born in Switzerland as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret in 1887, Le Corbusier became a world-renowned architect. In "Towards a New Architecture," he expands upon and clarifies his guiding design principles specifically that buildings should serve modern needs and that form should be pure. Le Corbusier rejected much of classical and art deco design as valuing stylistic experimentation and expression over function. His dramatically different ideas of using materials and design to change the relationship of people with their surroundings completely transformed modern architecture and city planning and remain relevant and informative to this day. "Towards a New Architecture" is a must-read for every architect, designer, urban planner, and anyone who desires to better understand one of the twentieth-century's most important architectural figures. 118,95 kr. First published in 1927, E. M. Forster's "Aspects of the Novel" compiles a series of lectures given to Trinity College at the University of Cambridge in that same year. By utilizing examples from other classic works Forster puts forward a standard theory on the writing of fictional prose. The book takes turns tackling the issues of story and plot, character, fantasy, prophecy, pattern and rhythm in the writing of novels; the elements which Forster asserts as essential to successful writing. Critics of the work, many who are successful novelists in their own right, including W. Somerset Maugham and Virginia Woolf, have heaped varying degrees of praise upon the "Aspects of the Novel". There are many books on the subject of writing, but few that have been penned by authors as successful at the enterprise as E. M. Forster. Any aspiring author would be wise to add this work to their library of works on the subject of writing, for even if it may not hold the ever elusive secret to great writing it provides an invaluable perspective into the process from one of English literature's greatest novelists. 118,95 kr. A founding member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of New York City writers, critics, and actors, Dorothy Parker rose to literary fame during the first part of the 20th century. An accomplished poet, writer, critic, satirist, playwright, and screenwriter, Parker was known for her sharp wit in describing 20th century urban life. Although she disliked this characterization, because she thought it undermined her writing, it is primarily for this reputation that her writing endures to this day. First published in 1926, "Enough Rope" is Parker's first collection of poetry and was an immediate commercial and critical success. Containing many poems which first appeared in such famous magazines as "The New Yorker", "Vanity Fair", and "Life", Parker's collection was heralded not just for its brilliant wit but also its sometimes darker reflections on love, death, and the role of gender in America during the first part of the 20th century. 178,95 kr. "Treatise on Law" is a collection of essays by Saint Thomas Aquinas, drawn from his most significant work, "Summa Theologica". The impact of Aquinas on Western law and ethics cannot be overstated. The venerated Dominican Friar and Catholic priest was an important Doctor of the Church during the 13th century and his writings on theology and philosophy have shaped church doctrine and Western political theory for centuries. Aquinas argued that all laws made by man must be measured against Divine Law, or the plan by God for humanity. Only those laws consistent with God's command to love thy neighbors as thyself and to love God above all others are truly just laws. All morality flows from this Divine Law and whether something is ethical may only be judged by its action or effect. Aquinas argued that the cardinal virtues of justice, fortitude, prudence, and temperance are ordained by God and these principles must guide all just political and legal systems. "Treatise on Law" brings together some of Aquinas' most influential ideas in one volume so that their impact on our moral and legal systems may be better understood. 168,95 kr. "Michael Kohlhaas" is Heinrich von Kleist's early 19th century novella based upon the real historical 16th century story of Hans Kohlhase. A German merchant from Colln, Kohlhase is attacked by the servants of a Saxon nobleman, Gunter von Zaschwitz, while he is on his way to a fair in Leipzig. As a result of the attack, Kohlhase has his horses stolen and subsequently suffers significant losses to his business. The dispute between Kohlhase and Zaschwitz soon develops into a full-blown feud that would spread across the whole of Saxony. Unable to achieve redress for his losses through official legal channels, Kohlhase pursued a course of revenge by enlisting a band of criminals to spread terror throughout all of Saxony. The particulars of Heinrich von Kleist's novella are somewhat changed from the actual historical events but largely represent the same conflict of a merchant who is wronged and being unable to achieve suitable restitution through legal channels resorts to criminal means. Noted for its surprisingly modern themes and style "Michael Kohlhaas" has been recognized as an important early work in the realist literary movement. 128,95 kr. First published in 1926, "The Sun Also Rises" is Ernest Hemingway's enduring novel of the Lost Generation and their directionless wandering through life in Europe following World War I. The novel centers around the frustrated love story between the protagonist, Jake Barnes, and the twice-divorced and sexually free Lady Brett Ashley. Jake was wounded in the war and is physically unable to consummate his love for Brett, while Brett is unable to decide what she wants in life and drifts from one relationship to another, afraid to be alone. Jake and Brett spend their time with other American expatriates living in Paris and the group of friends, dislocated by war and united in their dissatisfaction with their lives in America, seek out entertainment and distraction in a fishing trip and an adventure to Spain to see the bullfighting. The friends and lovers often fight amongst themselves while they spend their time drinking and wondering what to do next. The novel is written in Hemingway's unique style and employs his "iceburg theory" of writing, which favored minimalism in descriptions that allowed a work's deeper meaning to remain implicit. Widely hailed as one of Hemingway's most significant novels, "The Sun Also Rises" remains a timeless and engrossing masterpiece of American literature. 153,95 kr. French philosopher Henri Bergson produced four major works in his lifetime, the second of which, "Matter and Memory", is a philosophical and complex nineteenth century exploration of human nature and the spirituality of memory. In this work, Bergson investigates the function of the brain, and opposes the idea of memory being of a material nature, lodged within a particular part of the nervous system. He makes a claim early in this essay that matter and memory are dualistic, leading to a careful consideration of the problems in the relation of body and mind. His theories on sense, dualism, pure perception, concept of virtuality, and famous image of the memory cone often make Bergson's essay a confusing and challenging existentialist work. However, the years of research and extensive pathological investigations spent in preparation for this and other essays have gained Bergson great distinction as a brilliant, though unjustly neglected, theorist and philosopher. "We" takes place hundreds of years into a bleak future, where the citizens live under the total control and surveillance of a police state, called One State. The country is made almost entirely out of glass, which makes it easier for the government to watch every move of its citizens. One State manages all aspects of the society with a rigid, scientific discipline where art and passion are outlawed. Citizens are expected to march in step, wear the prescribed uniforms, and are only able to refer to each other by their assigned numbers, rather than names. The main character is D-503, a mathematician who lives willingly under One State's strict rules until he meets and falls in love with I-330, a rebel who lives her life with the creativity and lust prohibited and feared by One State. "We" is widely viewed as the forerunner to such dystopian classics as "Brave New World" and "1984" and continues to be a fascinating and vivid work of science fiction and social commentary. He grew up in Sichuan province, China, and set out at the age of twenty-five to travel in the country, writing poems. A well-read student of both Confucianism and Taoism in his youth, and later an unofficial court poet, Li Po is credited as the author of over one thousand poems about wine, friendship, nature, solitude, and time. His works are revered for their exquisite imagery, rich and effortless language, and cadence, although some critics admonished his violation of traditional poetic form. The poet was a member of a group in Shandong called the "Six Idlers of the Bamboo Brook", an informal group dedicated to literature and wine. Popular legend tells that an intoxicated Li Po drowned after falling from his boat in an attempt to embrace the reflection of the moon in the Yangtze River. When Vane finally encounters the wraith, called Mr. Raven, he comes to discover that it knew his father, who now resides in "the region of the seven dimensions". Vane follows the apparition through a mirror to this strange new world where he encounters the house of beds, where dreamers sleep in death until the end of the world, the Little Ones, who are children prevented from ever growing up, and Lilith, the beautiful and charming princess of Bulika. Vane vows to help the Little Ones after meeting and falling in love with Lona, the eldest of the children. A fantastical journey with great battles and heartbreaking tragedy, Vane searches for truth and redemption in a mystical world. "Lilith" is considered one of MacDonald's darkest and most profound works, one that concerns the very nature of life, death, and salvation itself. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
