413,95 kr. The Big Island was the first of the Hawaiian Islands to be settled by early Polynesians. It was from the Big Island that Kamehameha proceeded to create a kingdom of Hawaii. It was on the Big Island where Captain Cook was killed and where the kapu system was overthrown. The Big Island was the creadle of Hawaii's paniolo culture, where coffee was first cultivated, and where hula began its modern revival through the Merrie Monarch Festival. It is the only island with active volcanoes, and the island most devastated by natural disasters. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, explorers, traders, adventurers, and missionaries arrive along with Western diseases that devastate the original inhabitants of the land. In the mid- to late nineteenth century, sugar becomes king and thousands of immigrant workers arrive whose future generations will lead to a multi-ethnic society. In the first half of the twentieth century, a tourist industry develops around Kilauea's eruptions. Sugar workers strike, Marines train in Waimea, and earthquakes and tsunamis destroy coastal towns. In the second half of the twentieth century, the tourist industry becomes resort-oriented, the Hawaiian Renaissance evolves into the sovereignty movement, and astronomy and science become a significant part of the island's economic future. The Big Island is not only rich in history but in visual imagery recording its past, maintained in pubic, private, and family archives. From these collections, over 400 photographs and illustrations have been selected to narrate the Island's story and enable us to time-travel through the island's exciting past filled with colorful personages, dramatic events, and sweeping economic, cultural, and social change.

333,95 kr. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is forever burned into the national consciousness as a turning point in world history. Today, Pearl Harbor is a place of pilgrimage, not only for the generation of Americans that fought in World War II, but also for their descendants, and for hundreds of thousands of Japanese who come to pay their respects. Yet the tropical lagoon that was catapulted into the spotlight that fateful day has a history of its own. Long before it became known as Pearl Harbor, it was a placid bay fed by streams that flowed down from Oahu's mountains. This massive lagoon, known to the Hawaiians as Puuloa, was once home to an extensive system of fishponds that provided a rich and plentiful bounty. Granted to the U.S. in negotiations with the Hawaiian government related to the import of Hawaiian sugar in 1888, Pearl Harbor grew in importance over the years, making a quantum leap when the U.S. headquartered its Pacific Fleet there in 1940. By 1941, America was on war footing, with Hawaii at the helm as the central defense post of the western front. The stage was set, yet few anticipated the extremity of events to come. From Fishponds to Warships: Pearl Harbor provides a sweeping view of the region's past, from geologic origins to fishpond days, through the tense moments before and after the attack, and the years of reflection and repair right up to the present. A valuable resource for anyone interested in Pearl Harbor, it is a colorful work filled with rare photographs documenting the key military figures involved and the intense battle. Wartime posters, advertisements and propaganda are also included, along with a nostalgic look at life in wartime Hawaii.

213,95 kr. The world's greatest migration of animal life occurs every evening when uncountable numbers of mostly small marine organisms rise up from the dark, chilly depths of the open ocean to its surface waters. The people who witness this nighttime migration are blackwater divers""brave divers who throw themselves off a boat in the dark of night in open ocean waters that are, for all practical purposes, bottomless. The animals that we encounter range in size from baby squids smaller than a pinky nail to forty-foot long jellyfish called siphonophores. Kona is the birthplace and world headquarters for blackwater diving. Its proximity to deep water and favorable ocean conditions make Hawai'i the perfect place for blackwater diving, but divers can also visit places such as Florida, the Philippines, Indonesia, and even Papua New Guinea to see many similar animals. Blackwater Diving in Hawai'i is designed to satisfy the curious ocean aficionado by presenting beautiful photos and information on over 300 strange pelagic animals, most of which you won't find in a standard field guide to reef animals. This book is intended to present an overview of life in the open ocean at night. Each epipelagic creature is given five minutes in the spotlight to explore a little of what we know about them.

Hollywood knew Kauai's secrets long before the Garden Isle became a destination for travelers from around the globe. Its fascination with Kauai goes as far back as 1933 when the first major feature, White Heat (originally titled Cane Fire), was filmed. The New Kauai Movie Book includes films made since the book's original release in 1996 such as The Descendants, a film acclaimed as the most authentic movie about Hawaii ever made; Pirates of the CaribbeanOn Stranger Tides; Soul Surfer, the story of Kauai shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton; and Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder. It documents Hollywood's almost century-long love affair with Kauai integrating rare movie stills of casts, crews, and sets, along with the breathtaking color imagery of locations by renowned island landscape photographer David Boynton. Readers are able to trace the location of almost every major Hollywood feature filmed on the island including Jurassic Park, South Pacific, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Descendants. It is almost like visiting the locations where your favorite memorable scenes were made and reliving them. The New Kauai Movie Book is also filled with detailed information about film making on Kauai. There is a concise history of surfing movies, a look at documentary filmmaking in the island's native forests, and accounts of Japanese film companies. As well, there is a driving guide to movie locations, a two-page film location map, a comprehensive compendium of feature films ever made on the island.

They have multiplied and diversified into every imaginable shape and form, from 20-foot giant squids to tiny creatures living between sand grains. Ninety percent of these animals are invertebrates--animals without backbones. Many are beautiful, a few are bizarre, and all are fascinating. This book, as sequel to John Hoover's best-selling guide Hawaii's Fishes, leads the reader deeper into the undersea realm with photographs of over 500 species of lobsters, shrimps, crabs, shells, octopus, corals, anemones, urchins, stars, sponges, slugs and a host of other lesser-known creatures. Virtually all the animals encountered by snorkelers, divers and beachgoers in Hawaii are here. Hoover provides scientific, common and Hawaiian names for each animal and a wealth of information on its natural history, ecology, cultural importance and even suitability for aquariums. Every person who visits the sea, whether diver, snorkeler, wader or beachgoer, eventually encounters an unrecognized creature--a beautiful shrimp, an exquisite shell, something covered with spines, a puzzling slug or worm. The question "What is that?" always arises. This book gives the answer with style.
