With the continued aim of providing a forum where the latest developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology can be presented and discussed, the XXI International Materials Research Congress, held in Cancun, Mexico in August 2012, hosted the Nanostructured Materials and Nanotechnology Symposium. This volume compiles a number of the contributions presented.

This volume is a compilation of papers that were presented at Symposium 7D of the XXI International Conference of the Mexican Academy of Materials Science - MRS Mexico, organised in collaboration with MRS, 'Advanced Structural Materials', which was held from August 13th to 18th, 2012 in Cancun, Mexico.

This volume of proceedings published by the Materials Research Society and Cambridge University Press is the first one to bear the title Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Issues in Materials Science (CHARIMSc). It presents selected contributions of the symposium in its 2011 edition, evaluated by an academic committee.

Symposium BB, 'Solution Synthesis of Inorganic Films and Nanostructured Materials', was held during the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting on April 9-13, 2012. This proceedings volume provides a glimpse of the recent developments in the chemical solution growth of nanoparticles, nanocrystals, films, and nanostructured materials for various applications.

This volume contains papers presented at Symposium HH 'Nanocomposites, Nanostructures and Heterostructures of Correlated Oxide Systems' held in San Francisco, California, April 9-13, 2012, during the JSAP-MRS Joint Spring Meeting (JSAP: Japan Society of Applied Physics).

Symposium U of the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting, 'Materials for Catalysis in Energy', was held April 10-13. Researchers were brought together to highlight recent progress and discuss challenges and opportunities in the materials aspect of catalysis research and development for energy applications.

Symposium S, 'Nanostructured Metal Oxides for Advanced Applications', was held April 1-5 at the 2013 MRS Spring Meeting. In these proceedings, attention is paid to the synthesis, structural and functional characterization of self-assembled nanostructures and architectures of all metal oxides with application potentials.

Symposium R, 'Nanostructured Semiconductors and Nanotechnology' was held April 1-5, 2013, at the 2013 MRS spring meeting in San Francisco, California. The aim of the symposium was to review present and future trends of research on nanostructured semiconductors from fundamental issues of synthesis to emerging applications in advanced devices.

The scope of detector materials for semiconductors and scintillators includes a wide variety of molecular compounds such as cadmium zinc telluride (CZT), lanthanum halides, and others. This book explores results in radiation detection materials from both experimental and theoretical standpoints, as both are needed to grow and characterize materials that will produce better detectors in the future.
