Cultures, for as long as we have had history, have had some sense of magic. This book contends that some of it, at least, is real; it describes what that is, and why the Bible is so negative about it. However, to say 'magic is real' in our contemporary culture could be very misleading. In fact, wrong. For what our culture thinks of as 'magic' - as vague and diffuse as that is - is likely to be very different from what was practised in the Ancient Near East (the things that modern English translations of the Old Testament call, for instance, sorcery or witchcraft) or in the Greco-Roman world (what the New Testament calls magic). It also may be very different from what is called 'magic' or 'witchcraft' in animistic or ancestor-worshipping cultures today.This book unpacks the background and explores the implications of the biblical teaching about the supernatural. We are very familiar with the New Testament and can easily verify its teachings, but what happened to these teachings subsequently? Were they upheld, diluted or discarded? In particular, what did the Church Fathers make of Paul's cardinal doctrine 'justification by faith'?The sixteenth-century Protestant Reformers thought it was ignored prior to Augustine (354-430). This book is about how God''s Word shapes and rules our devotion to him. What is the best way of talking about this? ''Spirituality'' is what many people call it, but this is not the ideal word. It can mean a great many things, some of them very far removed from anything the Bible teaches. ''Piety'' is another possibility, but this is sometimes used in a rather negative way. Preferable is ''Devotion''. When we speak of a couple being ''devoted'' to each other, we mean that their relationship is strong, loyal, and loving - which is how we should relate to God.All three words are used in this book. Along with the Thirty-nine Articles, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal, the two books of Homilies form part of the constitutive documents of the Church of England and are therefore of considerable importance for understanding both its history and its doctrine. But whereas the others are well-known and easily obtainable, the Homilies remain obscure.Having said that, there is still much in the Homilies that is of great value and it would be a pity to lose that because of the formidable difficulties involved in tackling the original texts today.This Guide therefore aims to provide modern readers and students with a bridge that will help them gain access to what the Homilies teach and adapt them to modern usage and circumstances. Each homily is outlined according to its own internal divisions and themes, and extracts from them are provided in italics.These extracts are designed to sum up the teaching of the homily in question, but also to be capable of modern use as quotations in sermons preached on the same subjects today.
