Award-winning director and author Makoto Shinkai offers a romantic sci-fi tale about young love and space adventure, based on his animated film. This new novel gives readers more insight into Mikako and Noboru's relationship. Fans of the original series will again be immersed in the beautiful world of Shinkai. The word, "world"... I vaguely thought it meant anywhere there was cell phone reception. It's the year 2046. Mikako Nagamine and Noboru Terao are middle school classmates, tentatively sharing an unspoken first love--but unbeknownst to him, Mikako has been recruited into the UN Space Force, and instead of going on to high school, will join the spacecraft Lysithea to search for alien Tarsians. As she travels further and further to the outer reaches of the solar system, the time it takes for a text message to reach the Earth grows longer and longer. Back on Earth, time passes normally for Noboru, but as the years pass he still can't forget the voice on the other side of the cell phone... Steeped in nostalgia and memory, Arata Kanoh brings to the page the award-winning OVA by acclaimed filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, director of She and Her Cat, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Garden of Words, 5 Centimeters per Second, and the highest-grossing anime film of all time, Your Name. Arata Kanoh is a writer who has produced novelizations of Makoto Shinkai's other works, including 5 Centimeters Per Second (also available from Vertical).

The history of Japan's martial traditions is replete with many outstanding individuals, but few have attained the legendary status of Morihei Ueshiba. Throughout his extraordinary life, Ueshiba mastered an array of martial arts and techniques, including jujutsu and kendo, and endlessly devoted himself to the philosophies of Japan's martial schools. He also had a deep knowledge of the practice of Shinto. Refining these traditions into a wholly new system, he founded Aikido—the way of harmony. Aikido goes far beyond simple methods of attack or self-defense, seeking to dispel aggression by creating a sense of oneness, thus ultimately promoting peace. Through its unique aspect of both preserving the heritage of the classical fighting arts and applying them within the context of contemporary society, Aikido has quickly become one of the most respected martial arts in the world. In this engaging and compelling biography, the Founder's son Kissomaru Ueshiba (the second Aikido Doshu) details the life of this remarkable man, from his early years as a youth in the turbulent Meiji era to his death in 1969. Incorporating many first-hand accounts and anecdotes as well as historical documents, the author weaves a fascinating narrative of the Founder's life, and with great fondness tells of his own memories of the man who would come to be known as O Sensei—great master.Ueshiba reveals much about the character and temperament of his father, painting a picture of a man of formidable commitment and spirituality, in both his practice of Aikido and his message of peace. Indeed, his dedication to his art was so strong that through his techniques he was able to attain kami-waza; an ability that transcends the human and reaches the divine. This book will appeal to any reader with an interest in the life of Morihei Ueshiba and a desire to discover the real person behind the legend.

On June 19, 1988, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper broke the story: Recruit Co. Ltd., a media conglomerate founded by Hiromasa Ezoe, was alleged to have bribed the deputy Mayor of Kawasaki City. Thus began what became known as the Recruit Affair, a scandal that shook Japanese politics to the core, just at the height of the Bubble Economy and brought down the long-entrenched Liberal Democratic Party and the government of Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita. As the other mainstream newspapers also began reporting on seemingly-suspicious stock transfers by a Recruit subsidiary to bureaucrats and prominent politicians, an angry public turned on founder and President Ezoe, setting him up as the villain, although the transactions were, actually, legal. Soon, Ezoe was detained by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, and harshly interrogated. There was no concrete evidence against Ezoe, but the sensational reports in the newspapers, TV new programs, and weekly magazines fanned the public's fury and encouraged the prosecutors to pressure a confession out of him. Ultimately, many top LDP politicians were linked to the scandal, and the Takeshita cabinet quit en masse the following year. Mentally and physically exhausted, Ezoe signed the interrogation records. He was given a suspended sentence, and resigned from the business he had founded as a Tokyo University student.Where is the Justice? is Hiromasa Ezoe's detailed and candid look at the Recruit Affair and the part he played in it. More than that, however, it is a sharp indictment of what the Los Angeles Times called, "the pervasive political dishonesty and rampant profiteering at the heart of the system..." Many experts on contemporary Japanese politics say that, in retrospect, the Recruit Affair was a significant turning point in Post-War Japan, as the Bubble Economy became the Lost Decade. Ezoe offers a unique perspective on these events, from which we, today, can draw important lessons about ethics, accountability, transparency, and the often dangerously entwined roles of policy makers, policy enforcers - and those who report and manipulate public opinion.
