What is required to renew and articulate public spaces? The need for, and demands of, public spaces are highly specific to the local spatial and social conditions under which people live. Action at neighborhood level is crucial, and must involve interacting and co-creating with residents to discover their needs. At the start of the pandemic, superwien was commissioned to develop innovative designs for urban public spaces in three different cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Maputo (Mozambique), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The main objective of this applied research was to strengthen the capacity of local governments to undertake participatory urban design processes. This book calls upon architects and urbanists to develop place-based solutions in challenging circumstances.

"Many would consider a country without building materials uninhabitable." With these words, Minister of Industry Gylfi Þorsteinsson Gíslason opened Iceland's first and only cement plant in 1958. More than a century before, Portland cement was first used as plaster on the walls of the Reykjavík cathedral. At the time, most rural and urban dwellings were still being built from local turf or expensive imported timber. Just a few decades later, Icelandic architects, engineers, and masons were building their country exclusively in concrete. How did this material become so popular that the first decades of the twentieth century are referred to as "the age of concrete"? The Icelandic Concrete Saga focuses on over one hundred years of Icelandic architecture, construction, and technology. It traces the history of an architecture in constant struggle with material scarcity and the natural elements, its outcomes intertwined with Icelandic politics, culture, and society.

Are You a Model? explores the model as architectural tool and practice. The volume approaches architectural models not as categorical objects but through questions such as: What determines a model's functions and agencies? When in the design process does it unfold its power and when has it served its purpose? Based on nine overarching questions, the book brings together interdisciplinary voices from architecture, art history as well as architectural and curatorial practice, and software engineering. 31 contributions interweave perspectives from various disciplines and geographies, and reveal surprising affinities rather than seeking conclusive answers. The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of the locally adapted International Style that is typical of the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Foundation. The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful history of the structure and gathers detailed historical materials about its architecture and residents. Current interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening.

Threatened with demolition and celebrated as icons of brutalism, Gerd and Magdalena Hänska's Mäusebunker and the former Hygieneinstitut designed by Hermann Fehling and Daniel Gogel in Steglitz, Berlin, form a unique ensemble of exceptional buildings. Von frühen modernistischen Designs wie der Typentankstelle von Hans Poelzig, den Reichsautobahn-Normentankstellen der Stuttgarter Schule bis zu Lothar Götz' modularen Nachkriegstypenbauten als Wegbereiter späterer standardisierter Corporate Designs: Seit den 1920er Jahren prägen Tankstellen unsere Umgebung. Obwohl der Bau von Tankstellen seitdem auch eine relevante Aufgabe für bekannte Architektur- und Ingenieurbüros darstellt, ist der Bautypus bisher kaum ein Thema im Fachdiskurs. Franz Arlart untersucht und systematisiert den Werdegang der Tankstelle in Deutschland aus der Sicht entwerfender Architekt*innen. Unter Berücksichtigung funktionaler, technischer und symbolischer Belange werden die architektonische Entwicklung des Bautypus von 1920 bis 2020 aufgearbeitet und Tendenzen für einen zukünftigen Tankstellenbau skizziert.

How can climate change and spatial inequalities be tackled under crisis conditions and in view of limited spatial and other resources? While basic spatial relations are currently being renegotiated in cities throughout Europe, it is in Athens that some of the most pressing urban problems have been crystallized in order to establish unique spaces of experimentation. Infrastructures of Freedom sheds light on the impact of inadequate public lighting in self-built communities in Cape Town. Narcotic Cities traces the complex entanglements of drugs, institutions, activities, and the way they are represented with spaces and places, shedding new light on our cities. Urbanizing Suburbia considers three current and related processes underway in global cities: the hyper-gentrification of inner cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes occurring in the outer city. Rocketing housing prices have displaced residents from inner cities and created a rent gap in outer cities. Increasingly, municipalities, developers, and displaced residents search for opportunities in the suburban belts.
