-THIS IS THE ONLY EDITION THAT INCLUDES an index, timeline of dates, and family tree- "I was born May 3, 1824, almost seventy-seven years ago. I think I was just like most children. I loved to play, and I loved to go to school. I remember my first day at school. It was in a little log cabin, with no windows, just a log sawed out and paper greased and pasted over the opening, with little sticks of wood set upright to paste the paper to, or strengthen it, and we had to be as careful of it as if it had been glass windows." In 1904, Jane Patton, née Cade privately published this chronicle of her life in Indiana and Illinois. Her memories are rich and detailed, and accompanied by names and dates-lots of names and dates. Though her book has been republished (scanned and printed as-is) as an important historical work in the past, this is the only edition that includes an index, timeline of dates, and family tree. You can now look up your ancestors, or just follow which Martha, William, or David, she's indicating in a given paragraph. Over 400 names are included in the index, and over 150 in the family tree. With clarified names and relationships, standardized spellings, modern punctuation, and chapter breaks, this edition will prove easier to read than the original. "I have written from memory, and I do not claim that [these lines] are perfect, for the best people are liable to make mistakes. I have written everything as I remember it, without notes, by the way. I hope that my own family may get some good out of it when I am done writing it. It is a pleasure to me to be permitted to do this work, and I am thankful to God for the thoughts that have come to me while writing this book, and the great blessings that have been bestowed on me." A note on our public domain restorations: Idle Winter Press selects interesting projects in the public domain to publish. Our books are not simply a PDF of an original version, printed and bound with a sub-standard cover. We painstakingly restore images, professionally format interiors, and design quality covers. If the text warrants it, we add an index (or improve the existing one), create diagrams, and research contexts as necessary. Though the public domain text is available for free on the internet, the high-quality, beautifully printed restoration is only available from Idle Winter Press.

Shakespeare's Complete Paragon combines all 42 illustrations and quotations from the first two volumes in the series, Shakespeare's Zoo and Shakespeare's Menagerie. The series was originally envisioned as a 42 illustration set, and this book makes it a reality. Laudea Martin is a long-time student of Shakespeare, as well as both art and wildlife. Her delightful illustrations are created digitally with layers of texture, capturing the essence of various animals mentioned by William Shakespeare. The quotations included in this book are not Shakespeare's most famous quotations; they are instead those that evoke vivid imagery of animals, wild and domestic, that were in the common purview during Shakespeare's time. This is not a story, or even a poem; this book is meant to be enjoyed one page at a time. It takes a bit of time for the nuance of William Shakespeare's words to sink in, to really comprehend the meaning of each phrase. Though each source work is cited on the facing page, with act and scene numbers, and which character is speaking to whom, feel free to ignore the original context of the quotation, and experience it simply in the context of Martin's art. This volume, Shakespeare's Complete Paragon, includes all of the illustrations found in the Shakespeare's Paragon series. Other books in the series: Shakespeare's Zoo includes: falcon, eel, baboon, robin, bee, lizard, cricket, dove, camel, bat, crocodile, owl, fish, calf, parrot, crab, urchin, unicorn, spider, cat, and fox. Shakespeare's Menagerie includes: raven, butterfly, horse, frog, mole, fly, ape, swan, barnacle, snail, tiger, mouse, beetle, wren, sheep, whale, adder, eagle, elephant, chameleon, and stag.

The second in the Shakespeare's Paragon series, this volume continues where Shakespeare's Zoo left off, pairing the lesser-known words of the great William Shakespeare with Laudea Martin's incredible textured illustrations. Just as with a simple phrase, a line, or even part of a line in a poem or play, Shakespeare is able to convey the richness of a scene, so, too, can Laudea Martin capture the essence of an animal with her illustrations. William Shakespeare was famous for many phrases that we still use today; these are not those phrases. Included in this book are the often overlooked snippets that refer to animals of all kinds-some in general terms, and some very specific. Some even reflect common misunderstandings about the natural world that were prevalent at the time. The context of each of these lines is missing, and it doesn't matter. The animals in question may even have been referred to metaphorically in the original work. Here, each page is a work of art, made up of words and textures (some familiar, some not so familiar) representing some of the animals mentioned by Shakespeare. This volume, Shakespeare's Menagerie, includes: raven, butterfly, horse, frog, mole, fly, ape, swan, barnacle, snail, tiger, mouse, beetle, wren, sheep, whale, adder, eagle, elephant, chameleon, and stag. Other books in the series: Shakespeare's Zoo includes: falcon, eel, baboon, robin, bee, lizard, cricket, dove, camel, bat, crocodile, owl, fish, calf, parrot, crab, urchin, unicorn, spider, cat, and fox. Shakespeare's Complete Paragon includes: all of the above.

Friends, Romans, countrymen: this is not your average book of quotations by Shakespeare. Wherefore? Here you will find no comparisons to summers days, or advice to be true to oneself. Ladies will not protest too much, or demand the departure of damned spots. We are quite content with our winter, thank you very much, and our kingdom has plenty of horses. The stage of this brave new world has no men or women, rose-scented or otherwise, to bid goodnight to each other until the ides of March, or at least 'til it be morrow. So what kind of book can this be? That is the question. Shakespeare's brilliance shines through, not just in his most famous lines, but in every line. The tiniest snippet of his work contains fantastic wordplay and depth of imagery. This book takes some of his less-known bits about various animals and pairs them with Laudea Martin's unique illustrations assembled from textured layers. And, like all Shakespeare, each page will become easier to understand the more you read it. The brilliant words of Shakespeare are meant to be heard, not seen, so read the words aloud and listen to the rhythm. Read them again and again, and let your imagination fill in the details of the scene. Each illustration was digitally constructed using layers of textured color. Some textures will be immediately recognizable, such as wood grain or leaves; others may be more difficult to discern, but all come together to create whimsical representations of just a few of the animals mentioned by Shakespeare. This volume, Shakespeare's Zoo, includes: falcon, eel, baboon, robin, bee, lizard, cricket, dove, camel, bat, crocodile, owl, fish, calf, parrot, crab, urchin, unicorn, spider, cat, and fox. Other books in the series: Shakespeare's Menagerie includes: raven, butterfly, horse, frog, mole, fly, ape, swan, barnacle, snail, tiger, mouse, beetle, wren, sheep, whale, adder, eagle, elephant, chameleon, and stag. Shakespeare's Complete Paragon includes: all of the above.

Another charming natural history narrative on birds by Olive Thorne Miller, some of the chapters of Little Brothers of the Air were written in 1888, on the shore of the Great South Bay, Long Island; others in the northern part of New York State, known to its residents as the "Black River Country," a year or two later. Some chapters have been published in The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's Bazaar, The Independent and other papers. The nomenclature featured in the index has been updated to reflect modern common and scientific names as of 2015.

In Nesting Time by Olive Thorne Miller poetically portrays the habits and interactions between her feathered friends. Olive Thorne Miller converted one room of her house into a large aviary, and In Nesting Time describes her observations of the high drama that played out between the individuals of various species amongst her array of cages. Complete, updated index includes modern avian taxonomy. A note on our public domain restorations: Idle Winter Press selects interesting projects in the public domain to publish.
