The concept of desirable difficulties is central to many of the evidence-informed strategies - such as spaced practice, retrieval practice and interleaving - that have become so prevalent in recent years, and so are one of the most crucial building blocks of cognitive science. Based on the finding that instruction and tasks most effective for long-term learning often hamper short-term performance, they are also one of the most counter-intuitive. In their seminal work, Elizabeth and Robert Bjork identified four desirable difficulties - so called because they improve long-term retention and transfer while making learning seem more challenging - including varying the conditions of practice, spacing, interleaving and practice testing. Isaac Moore and Jade Pearce build on this, explaining each strategy in detail including a summary of the research evidence that supports each difficulty, how it might look in the classroom and how it might be implemented with the greatest impact. They also discuss why students often fail to use these strategies in their independent study (despite their effectiveness) and how teachers and school leaders may encourage students to use them more. Succinct summaries and case studies from a range of practitioners will enable all readers to utilise desirable difficulties in their own classrooms and beyond.

Ask any teacher and they would say workload is one of the biggest blockers to their professional development. Simply put, most teachers are time-poor and too busy to engage with educational research to improve their classroom instruction. One-pagers are ultra-concise, A4-sized summaries that share important ideas about good teaching. In this practical volume, Jamie Clark presents more than 55 evidence-informed one-pagers that help educators reflect on their practice, build pedagogical knowledge, and prompt professional conversations with colleagues.

For one reason or another, mainstream education does not suit every young person. Many young people are educated in alternative provision, which is defined by the Department for Education as educational provision 'for pupils who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not otherwise receive suitable education'. As of 2023, over 25,000 young people are enrolled in alternative provision, and those numbers continue to rise. It is essential, then, that the curriculum on offer in alternative provision is exemplary, as these young people - already facing extraordinary challenges - need the very best if they are going to progress successfully into adulthood. Huh is the Egyptian god of endlessness, creativity, fertility and regeneration. He is the deity Mary Myatt and John Tomsett have adopted as their god of the curriculum. Their Huh series of books focuses on how practitioners design the curriculum for the young people in their schools. The Huh project is founded on conversations with colleagues doing great work across the education sector. In AP Huh, Mary Myatt and John Tomsett discuss curriculum provision for pupils attending alternative provision with some of the leading experts in the field. Mary and John interviewed pupils, parents, teachers, headteachers, CEOs, educational consultants and lecturers. They then edited the transcriptions of those interviews to provide an ambitious, thoughtful, nuanced and challenging vision of what the best possible provision looks like for children who find that mainstream schooling is not for them. The challenging conversations that comprise AP Huh paint a positive picture that is hugely hopeful for the future of the curriculum in our alternative provision settings.

Critical pedagogy is a transformative approach to education, moving beyond a simple transmission model of teaching where the teacher imparts predetermined knowledge to students. This participatory and empowering pedagogy can ensure classrooms become places of opportunity. Students are encouraged to critique their world and develop the essential attributes needed to become consciously aware, politically knowledgeable and socially responsible. Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion provides a refreshing perspective on English secondary education and discusses why critical pedagogy is more essential than ever for our marginalised and oppressed students. Realistic, pragmatic and sensitive suggestions enable the school leader and classroom teacher to consider critical pedagogy as an ongoing responsive, moral and political endeavour to fight social injustice. This book is a must-read for all those who value education as the practice of freedom and emancipation.

Formative practices can motivate students, enhance their self-regulation, and help find a better balance between education and assessment. However, the successful implementation of formative practices and feedback in lessons begins with a well thought out educational design. In this book, the authors outline the implementation principles to which formative action must adhere to be of practical and substantive significance. They also explain how educators can use feedback more effectively and efficiently, and the essential role of instilling a shared sense of quality. This book is for teachers, educators, leaders, and curriculum developers from primary to higher education who want to successfully integrate formative practices into their daily teaching methods.
