The "Anunatvapur¿atvanirdesaparivarta" is a short Mahayana sutra extant in its entirety only in Chinese translation. To judge from its use as a proof-text in the seminal philosophical treatise "Ratnagotravibhaga", which quotes roughly half of the sutra, it is a fundamental scripture expressing ideas about the unitary nature of säsara and nirväa, and each individual's innate capacity for awakening, called in this text and elsewhere 'tathagatagarbha,' 'embryo of the tathagatas.' Although the text has hitherto drawn the attention primarily of Japanese scholars, this is the first critical edition of the sutra, aligning its Chinese text with the available Sanskrit, offering a richly annotated English translation, a detailed introduction which places the work in its historical and doctrinal context, and a number of appendices exploring key notions, providing a reading text shorn of annotation, and enumerating the prolific quotations of the work found in Chinese Buddhist literature. This volume is thus an important contribution to studies of developing Mahayana Buddhism, Buddhist doctrine and the textual history of scriptures.

Der fünfte Teil der ¿Hamburgischen Kirchengeschichte in Aufsätzen¿ umfasst die Hamburger Kirchengeschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. Neben Überblicksbeiträgen zur Geschichte der Landeskirche in der Weimarer Republik, im ¿Dritten Reich¿, in der Nachkriegszeit und in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts werden theologische Außenseiter, die Studierendenseelsorge, der lange Weg zur Gleichberechtigung der Theologinnen, die Entnazifizierung, das Pädagogisch-Theologische Institut und die Praktische Theologie vorgestellt. In eigenen Beiträgen wird die Geschichte der katholischen Kirche geschildert. Biographien der Landesbischöfe und eine Bibliographie runden die Darstellung ab.

In the context of Turkey's accession to the EU, the issue of potential migration from Turkey and its impact upon European labor markets became one of the concerns of the EU, considering Turkey's growing population and young labor force. In 2011, half a century after the bi-lateral agreement between Turkey and Germany on labor recruitment in 1961, migration plays a key role in relations of Turkey with the EU and will even increase its significance - not necessarily for the next fifty years but certainly for the next decade. This book touches upon various aspects of the ongoing debate about the effects of Turkey's accession to the EU upon the migration flows and sheds light on various dimensions of current panorama, addresses policy implications as well as future challenges and opportunities.

Sport wird einerseits wie jede andere Tätigkeit in der Gesellschaft mit öffentlichen Abgabelasten beschwert, andererseits im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Tätigkeiten steuerlich geschont und sogar öffentlich unterstützt. Diese Ambivalenz der steuerlichen Behandlung des Sports hat wiederholt Fragen nach der öffentlichen Finanzierung des Sportes aufgeworfen: Inwieweit sind Leistungen der öffentlichen Hände gerechtfertigt, inwieweit lösen Sportveranstaltungen den Tatbestand der Besteuerung aus? Dieser von Martin-Peter Büch, Wolfgang Maennig und Hans-Jürgen Schulke herausgegebene Band versucht, unter dem Motto ¿Science meets Practice¿ ausgewählte Fragestellungen zu dieser Problematik aus wissenschaftlicher und sportpolitischer Sicht zu beantworten.

Die Autonomie des Sports, die verfassungsrechtlich verbrieft ist, wird durch das Gemeinschaftsrecht der EU nicht konsequent respektiert. So wird beklagt, dass die notwendige Kooperation der Verbände im Sport nicht hinreichend berücksichtigt wird. Hier setzen die Referenten des 9. Internationalen Hamburger Symposiums ¿Sport und Ökonomie¿ an, wenn sie rechtliche und ökonomische Fragen um Sportgroßveranstaltungen aufgreifen und Vorschläge zur Stellung des Sports im europäischen Rahmen diskutieren. Aufgezeigt wird, dass der sogenannte Sport ökonomisch geprägt wird, was noch keine angemessene Entsprechung auf europäischer Ebene gefunden hat. Das wird zum Beispiel bei Sportwetten und dem Glücksspielmonopol deutlich. Der Band wird die durch das EU-Weißbuch Sport und die Entschließung des Bundestages zum Sport in Europa entstandene Debatte weiter beleben.

Sport ¿ insbesondere der Hochleistungssport ¿ ist ein Faszinosum, das als Plattform für gesellschaftliche Anliegen genutzt wird. Hierauf gründen die unterschiedlichen Interessen am aktiven und passiven Sport und das staatliche Interesse am Spitzensport. In den meisten Ländern ist der Spitzensport nationales Anliegen: So bilden Staaten in nationalen Trainingszentren ihre Athleten aus, unterstützen ihre Sportverbände bei internationalen Wettbewerben oder fördern Bewerbungen für Sportgroßveranstaltungen. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes geben einen fundierten Einblick in die Organisation des Hochleistungssports und zeigen die unterschiedlichen Wege ausgewählter Staaten auf.

Small island states are one of the most affected areas by sea-level rise, and sustainable transport development is crucial to their transition towards resiliency. However, their special spatial situations, insularity, geographic remoteness, small populations, and small economies resulted in high transport costs and car dependencies. The book moves away from the conventional focus on urban areas in the Global North and tourism. It gives a different perspective on sustainable transport, travelling, and commuting in the Caribbean and Europe. The authors provide research-based insights and show the state-of-the-art and future approaches for policy-makers, academics, and practitioners. Even beyond small island state research, the book offers an innovative outlook.

Mental events, changes that take place in the consciousness of the narrated characters or the narrating entity, are an essential theme of narrative works. This book first undertakes a typologization of the procedures by means of which the content of consciousness is represented, as well as outlining the conditions of events and the criteria of eventfulness. Then, classic narrative works from various cultures and epochs ¿ from Parzival and Tristan, through Samuel Richardson and Jane Austen, to Fëdor Dostoevskij and Anton ¿exov ¿ are examined in terms of how mental events are shaped in them. The book follows three guiding questions. What philosophy of events and consciousness is expressed in the works? How disposed are different cultures and epochs to eventfulness? To what extent do they allow for the presentation of fundamental mental changes?

"New Yorks most valuable citizen" ¿ this honorary title was given to Adolph Lewisohn. When he was born in Hamburg in 1849 as the son of Orthodox Jews and successful merchants, a career as a merchant was put in his cradle. In search of personal freedom he persuaded his strict father in 1867 to let him go to New York. The fact that Lewisohn, as an industrialist in the USA, will generate millions of euros in only twenty years time would have seemed like a fairy tale to the young migrant. With dedication, foresight and flexibility he builds a copper empire. For four decades he then supports countless charitable projects with millions of euros. The Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Society) also owes him one of the biggest donations it received when it was founded. This is the first biography of this exceptionally successful businessman, art collector and international philanthropist.
