The papers of the 12th Comenius Conference titled »Imago Dei« (20-23 April 2022, Pápa Reformed Theological Seminary, Hungary) discussed especially the question what it means to be human. Are we just biological beings, not substantially different from other living beings? Or are we created in the image of God, having a special value and dignity over all creatures? The special place of humankind in creation is often recognized in the ability of (abstract) thinking, speaking, creativity. However, can rationality define humans and set them apart from other creatures? How can we communicate the rule of God, or the responsibility and accountability of humankind toward the Creator and the people of modern ages? [Imago Dei. Die zwölfte Comenius-Konferenz] In den Vorträgen der 12. Comenius-Konferenz mit dem Titel "Imago Dei" (20.-23. April 2022, Reformiertes Theologisches Seminar Pápa, Ungarn) ging es insbesondere um die Frage, was es bedeutet, ein Mensch zu sein. Sind wir nur biologische Wesen, die sich nicht wesentlich von anderen Lebewesen unterscheiden? Oder sind wir nach dem Bilde Gottes geschaffen und haben gegenüber allen Geschöpfen einen besonderen Wert und eine besondere Würde? Die besondere Stellung des Menschen in der Schöpfung wird oft in der Fähigkeit zum (abstrakten) Denken, Sprechen und zur Kreativität erkannt. Kann Rationalität jedoch den Menschen definieren und ihn von anderen Lebewesen unterscheiden? Wie können wir die Herrschaft Gottes oder die Verantwortung und Rechenschaftspflicht der Menschheit gegenüber dem Schöpfer und den Menschen der Moderne vermitteln?

»Mission in crisis« - this diagnosis makes immediate sense in view of the rapid decline of European Christian churches. However, there is a great deal of controversy as to what exactly this crisis consists of, what its actual causes are and what dynamics the crisis discourse itself exhibits. The contributions in this volume were held on an international conference that took place from November 25-27, 2022 at the University of Zurich. They pursue these questions from a mission-theological perspective and seek to open up new perspectives for the future of the church in both secular and plural societies. Allerdings ist heftig umstritten, worin genau diese Krise besteht, was ihre eigentlichen Ursachen sind und welche Dynamik der Krisendiskurs selbst aufweist. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes stammen von einer internationalen, vom 25.-27.11.2022 an der Universität Zürich abgehaltenen Tagung. Sie gehen diesen Fragen in missionstheologischer Perspektive nach und suchen neue Perspektiven für die Zukunft von Kirche in ebenso säkularen wie pluralen Gesellschaften zu eröffnen.

Observing Theology and the Transcultural« is to be the first in a series of 5 books, each presented under the same question - »What Does Theology Do, Actually?«, with vols. 2-5 focusing on one of the theological subdisciplines. This first volume proceeds from the observation of a need for a highly inflected »trans-cultural«, and not simply »inter-cultural«, set of perspectives in theological work and training.The revolution brought about across the humanities disciplines through globalization and the recognition of »multiple modernities« has introduced a diversity of overlapping cultural content and multiple cultural and religious belongings not only into academic work in the humanities and social sciences, but into the Christian churches as well.

Die Beiträge dieses Tagungsbandes bringen zwei Kernbereiche alttestamentlicher Forschung in ein konstruktiv-kritisches Gespräch miteinander: Pentateuchforschung und Jesajaforschung. Unter verschiedenen Aspekten werden Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen Texten des Pentateuch und Deuterojesaja diskutiert. Konkrete Schnittstellen zwischen beiden Bereichen bilden zum einen die Traditionen von den »Erzeltern« und zum anderen der »Exodus« als Vorstellung vom Auszug der Israeliten aus Ägypten. Die Aufsätze diskutieren anhand dieser Schnittstellen das inhaltlich-theologische und das literargeschichtliche Verhältnis zwischen dem Pentateuch und Deuterojesaja: Bestehen literarische Abhängigkeiten und wenn ja, in welcher Weise? Similarities and differences between texts of the Pentateuch and Deutero-Isaiah are discussed under various aspects. Specific connections between the two areas include the »Ancestor« traditions and the »Exodus« as a notion of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt. The articles discuss the relationship between the Pentateuch and Deutero-Isaiah in terms of theological content and literary history: Are there literary dependencies, and if so, to what extent? What ideas and references does Deutero-Isaiah presuppose when speaking of Egypt, of Abraham and Jacob, of the Exodus from Babylon or the waters in the wilderness?

In an often violent and dangerous world military defense systems exercise a major role in the ways societies and nations function, develop their aspirations, protect themselves, promote their identities and shape their destinies. As we are only too aware at this time in global history, conflict, war and peace are deeply entangled and often morally ambiguous.This timely volume of essays offers contributions from Europe, Africa and Australia. It raises fundamental issues about the indispensability of the virtues in the military; the relationship between military and the public good; the nature of combatants and a soldier's responsibilities for humanity and peace; moral and spiritual injury; and new challenges for pastoral care in the armed forces.

Exegesis has long been characterized by a broad disciplinary diversity, but also ambiguity - combining biblical studies, exegesis, early Jewish studies, early Christian studies, Ancient Near Eastern studies, Greco-Roman, and classical studies in various ways. This is to say nothing of the more recent development of contextual and engaged exegesis as reflected in feminist, liberation, postcolonial and queer Biblical exegesis. Furthermore, how and why scholars study the Bible varies, not only across confessional or cultural contexts, but across institutional-academic contexts. The book engages these complex methodological questions about the interrelations of context, institutions, and knowledge production in relation to such issues as religious belonging, ethnicity, political identity, and postcolonial pasts, among other issues of contemporary importance.

Christian women who put faith in action have been in solidarity with marginalized women in South Korea since the 1960s - most prominently, women workers since the 1960s, women victims of sexual violence since the 1970s, and women migrants since the 1990s. This volume focuses on the marginalized female marriage migrants and their experience of oppression. It analyses their socio-political context through a complementary subjective-objective approach and fosters a hermeneutics of empathy between Korean women and female marriage migrants based on historical scrutiny. In searching the scriptures Joo Mee Hur adapts intercultural theology for liberation, balancing between contextual hermeneutics and textual hermeneutics. Contrapuntally the author also opens a theological dialogue with the arts, which leads to a critical response and ethical commitment.

This volume addresses whether, how, and where academic research has an impact on ethical education, character formation, and the communication of values in late modern pluralistic societies. So führt der Band sonst oft separat betriebene Forschungen über die Traditionsbildung in und nach den Lehren lutherischer, calvinischer und römisch-katholischer Theologen und Juristen des 16., 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhunderts exemplarisch vergleichend zusammen. Insbesondere gehen die Untersuchungen der Frage nach, inwiefern die konfessionell geprägten Rechtslehren miteinander in Wechselwirkung standen. Sie umfassen Themen zu Rechtskonzepten des Gewissens sowie zu ihrer Umsetzung in den Lehren vom Öffentlichen Recht und vom Kirchenrecht aus theologie-, rechts- und philosophiegeschichtlichen Perspektiven.The essays joined in this volume investigate the role of the religious reform movements since the 16th century in the transformation of the Western legal tradition, focussing on a particular topic: how Jurisprudence had to deal with the reference to conscience, virulent for all confessional positions. Research on the teachings of Lutheran, Calvinist, and Roman Catholic theologians and jurists from the 16th up to the early 18th century, most often examined separately, is brought together in a comparative perspective. The essays comprise studies on legal concepts of conscience and on their implementation in the teachings in Public Law and in Canon or Ecclesiastical Law from the perspectives of theology, law, and philosophy.
