In the last 20 years in Europe, the issues related to gender equality have become integrated part of the discourses and the institutional strategies. The 1995 the Fourth World Conference in Beijing is regarded as a turning point and the ¿Beijing Declaration¿ has become the key global policy document on gender equality all over the world. A year after, in 1996, the European Commission issued a statement entitled "Incorporating equal opportunities for women and men into all community policies and activities". In this document the term gender mainstreaming ¿ the main pillar of the Beijing strategy- is used to explain the position the European Union intends to assume to address the issues of the gender inequality. An approach that is not intended as a substitute of the equal opportunities policies, but in addition to them. Gender Mainstreaming is an integrated approach that can be described as the reorganization, improvement, development and evaluation of policy processes. This involves the inclusion of a gender perspective in all policies, at all levels and at all stages of policy making.

The present book is the result of an internship experience within the Reverse Logistics & Liquidations team at Diesel Spa, a well-established company operating in the apparel & fashion industry. The company has recently recognised the increasing importance assumed by product returns in the nowadays business and has therefore pursued a re-organization of the process implemented for managing them. In fact, the development of the modern distribution channels and the subsequent increasing customer protection has forced organizations to allow for flexible return policies, which in turn determine increasing volumes of returned goods. Since product returns cannot be avoided (they have been defined a ¿necessary evil¿ by the current literature), therefore, organizations must find cost-efficient and profitable ways to deal with them. It is this exact consideration that led Diesel Spa to consider the opportunity of implementing a new process for managing product returns, with the final aim of increasing their contribution to the company¿s bottom line.

This book investigates how the experiences of intellectually ambitious women in mid-Victorian England are reflected in two main novels by George Eliot - "The Mill on the Floss" (1860) and "Romola" (1862-¿63) - to analyse the role that education and passions, duty and affections, played in the life of her heroines. It focuses on the unconventional ambitions of Maggie Tulliver and Romola De¿ Bardi: both characterised by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and hunger for love, they find themselves entangled in the conflict between individual desire and moral responsibility; only Romola finally succeeds in her quest for individual fulfilment. The cooperation of the intellect and emotional impulses posited as irreconcilable in Maggie¿s industrial England, proves instead to be achievable in Renaissance Florence. Eventually, ¿the shifting relation between passion and duty¿ can resolve itself into a cooperation not only in that mythical and pre-industrial world untroubled by the constraining 19th-century bourgeois patriarchy that Renaissance Florence was, but also in Victorian England itself, as exemplified by Eliot¿s own experience as an outstanding, unconventional woman intellectual.

I have been living in Dubai for nearly 3 years now, and I have to admit, it is a city where you could live a very comfortable life. It is estimated that out of almost 3 millions habitants in Dubai, only 15 percent of them are Emiratis, while the other 85 percent are expatriates, coming mostly from Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). However, the European migration has grown relatively over time. The UAE, in recent years has attained the status of a favorite destination for Italian immigrants. With a little over 10,000 Italians in the country, UAE has the largest Italian community in the MENA region. Foreigners usually work in the private sector while locals are employed in the public sector, from this the huge duality between private and public labour market. Only 1% of the private sector workforce is made up of nationals. A part from workers and families, the UAE also attracts growing numbers of foreign university students. This is the reason why human resources and education are now a days the center of the economy. GCC governments are investing heavily in the education sector, especially Saudi Arabiäs which invest around a quarter of total government spending.

This Thesis is conducted in the framework of a cooperation between DIAEE (Department of Astronautic, Electrical and Energy Engineering) of University of Rome and the Experimental Engineering Division (FSN-ING) of ENEA C.R. Brasimone, under the coordination of the European project Horizon2020 EUROfusion. Its aim is the development of a conceptual design for the Primary Heat Transfer System of the nuclear reactor DEMO, also demonstrating the compatibility with the main engineering requirements. The activity focuses on the thermal-hydraulic design, the sizing and analyses of the main components of the Primary Heat Transfer System and Energy Storage System. This is pursued through engineering approaches and the application of RELAP 5-MOD3.3, the main numerical tool between the thermal-hydraulic system codes.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), known also as host defense peptides (HDPs), are fundamental evolutionarily conserved components of innate immunity. Constitutively or inducibly expressed in response to invasion by pathogens, they operate synergistically with other defence molecules to combat infections. Despite differences in their size and sequence, many of them share a net positive charge at neutral pH, and fold into amphipathic structures, often after contact with bacterial surfaces. HDPs are attractive alternative candidates for antibiotic treatment, because they offer several advantages over the currently used drugs. They combat pathogens by targeting bacterial membranes, thus impairing essential membrane-related functions, and, in some cases, also target intracellular components. Due to their peculiar mechanism, the resistance towards these peptides would be difficult for the bacteria to develop. As described in this book, several proteins, including proteins apparently not involved in immunity, can behave as sources of HDPs hidden in their primary structures and released by the action of host and/or bacterial proteases.

The aim of this dissertation is to assess the consequences that the successful Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations Education and Science Organization (UNESCO) and in the United Nations General Assembly will have on the dynamics of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. The focus of the analysis is on the role played by the United Nations in past episodes and on the consequences of the bid in a broader strategic framework, drawing considerations on a political and legal level. The first part of this work reviews United Nations resolutions, debates and reprimands from an historical point of view. In the second part, the bid at the United Nations is analyzed in detail. The third part deals with one of the most delicate issues related to the aftermath of the recognition: the possible jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. The fourth part provides a legal analysis comparing the Palestinian case with other episodes of contested statehood. The final part analyses several opinions on the different paths the peace process and the conflict could take.

A conservation law is a partial differential equation, in which the variable is a quantity which remains constant in time, that is it cannot be created and destroyed. Thanks to the conservation laws it is possible to define models able to describe real systems in which something is stored. Fluid dynamic models, which are based on them, have a wide range of applications, because they can be used to describe blood flows, traffic evolution on street networks of big cities or on motorways of big states, data flows on telecommunication networks, flows of goods on supply chains, electric networks, etc. The model of the blood flow in the cardiovascular system will be treated in this book. Because of the increasing request from the medical community of scientifically and rigorous investigations about cardiovascular diseases, which are the cause of about the 40% of death, the research in this field is very active. Most of these disturbs are connected to arteriosclerosis, which leads to ictus, hearth attacks, etc.

The main purpose of the present work consists in the improvement of comprehension concerning directional amplification phenomena of slopes dynamic response by means of analysis of noise measurements. Ambient noise measurement tests, carried out using two kinds of portable sensors having different optimal response within different frequency ranges, have been aimed at formulating a possible generalization of the occurring conditions in prospect of using them as reliable indicators on the slopes behaviour in case of seismic event. A possible generalization should be based both on the comparison of instrumental data recorded during seismic events and on analysis of morphological and geological-technical characteristics of the test areas. In the context of this research project, the experimental tests have been mainly carried out within the municipality of Caramanico Terme, in Central Italy, since an ongoing accelerometer monitoring began in 2002 has provided data on slope dynamic behaviour by means of strong-motion recordings.

This book presents an analysis on sharing economies in the Italian business ecosystem. It is demonstrated that in Europe in general, and Italy more specifically, there is a gap between users and non-users of the sharing economy. Moreover, the gap exists also between the used services on collaborative platforms and the offered services on them. This analysis seeks to investigate the reasons of these gaps in two typologies of these transactions: transportation and accommodation services. These new business models are innovations which are changing quickly the supply and consumption chains. To summarize, the aim of the research is to explore consumer behaviour in sharing economies platforms concerning accommodation and transportation services, in Italy. First of all, a general analysis will be presented of the different definitions on the concept of sharing economies and of all the other terms related to them, such as collaborative consumption, gig economies, peer to peer consumption¿etc. In the second part the empirical analysis is introduced and explained. Conclusions will provide a general summary and suggestions in order to increase the use of those platforms in Italy.

This paper follows the stages that led to the casual discovery (in a certain way similar to a case of serendipity) of subjective synaesthesias and in particular investigates the French-Italian medical contribution, even though starting from a German academic document that is considered to be at the head of chain of references which, however, reveal themselves as a chain of equivocations (by doctors, before the historians). This investigation covers the crucial 70 years from the degree thesis of Sachs in 1812 to Pedronös article of 1882.

This book looks at the developments in EFL from the past to the present. It analyses theories including those from behaviourism to intercultural communicative competence and further recent developments. The necessity of being familiar with the various theories is underlined, including those which encourage autonomous and interactive learning using modern day ICT. The field is in continual evolution and this study examines the long and winding road of the different traditions in second language acquisition and teaching methodology which are often complimentary and interwoven. The aim of the book is to give valuable insight and some practical hints to the EFL professional concerning intercultural and multicultural teaching methodology in this digital world.

The Paschal (Easter) Mystery is the heart of the liturgy and the centre of the liturgical year of the Latin and Syro Malabar Rites. In various texts, the Second Vatican Council speaks repeatedly of the mysterium paschale or Paschal (Easter) Mystery, which signifies the passion, the death, and the resurrection of Christ. It is the accomplishment of the redemptive work that had been foreshadowed in the Old Testament. It is also said to be the fount from which all the sacraments, especially baptism and the Eucharist (SC 5 and 61; cf 10 and 47). The Christian life also gets its paschal character when it participates and incorporates into this paschal mystery through Baptism and the Eucharist (SC 6). Therefore, the council documents not only give the uppermost importance for the Easter Mystery, which is celebrated in the Paschal vigil liturgy, the Mother of all holy vigils, but also remember that it is the first and most important task of bishops and priests to help the faithful to know and to live this mystery (OT 8; CD 5; cf. AG 14) in their ordinary lives.

Human existence moves between the dark and painful interpretation of previous experiences and the openness to possible new scenarios filled with light. In fact, each of us is a ¿star¿: he is important, has its own place in the world and is irreducible. Feeling as a ¿star¿, nonetheless, is the product of our parents¿ lessons in love and tenderness. Consequently, in order to become ourselves, we need to let our origins rest and to redesign ourselves as ¿persons¿ in solidarity with the universe. Being ¿inside the family¿ means to be able to preserve ¿the family from within¿. The culture of stability is therefore a specific educational proposal to give back to family life the most authentic sense of its own ¿consistency¿: to rediscover the times of rest and the spaces of conviviality. ¿Being together¿ is the essential part of being-in-family. If social policies, employment dynamics and parental culture will not contribute to guarantee families a return to ¿togetherness¿, the future society will be inhabited by ¿dim stars¿, by increasingly lonely people, coming from the ¿domestic deserts¿ of today and of a forthcoming tomorrow.
