Five young men in their early twenties, carrying backpacks and guitars, climbed onto the bus in Mendoza, Argentina, that was to take them over the Andes to Santiago de Chile, where they would play the last show of their South American tour, and then board a plane the day after back to their home country of Germany. In spite of the South American winter, the weather in Mendoza was bright and sunny. The ride was supposed to take six hours, after three of which they would cross the border to Chile at a post called Cristo Redentor, at more than 3000 meters above sea level. Not long after the bus had left the station, the weather started to change for the worse. It started raining, and as the road wound itself higher up the Andes, rain soon turned to snow, and before long, white drifts were growing larger on either side of the road. We can be the new wind: The interaction of punk, hardcore punk, power pop and neo-garage with alternative rock in the 1980's.The hardcore punk scene had two major crossovers, one with heavy metal and one with pop influenced independent rock. A significant number of early hardcore punk bands incorporated more melodic, challenging and experimental elements in their music while retaining their punk backbone and by doing so, they went on to create something new.This book focuses on the crossover of Punk, Hardcore Punk, Garage Revival and Power Pop with the Alternative Rock scene and reports on many of the main bands in the genre.This book's structure is organised according to country, and then regionally. The USA obviously has the lion's share, since it was source of this new sounds melting pot, but the UK is also present as is the rest of the world. More than 160 bands were interviewed and even more reviewed, resulting in a total of more than 1000 bands. In 1994 punk rock fanzine writer Welly Artcore jumped in the van with legendary British punk band CHAOS U.K. for a two month tour around the U.S. Four years later he did it all again with his own band, FOUR LETTER WORD, this time also travelling across Canada. From the impossible drives, to scrapes with the authorities and the bands they shared stages and floors with along the way, with often nothing more than the name of a club on a piece of paper that turned out to be a disused unit in an industrial estate, they somehow made most of the gigs. There is little that I love more than the heartfelt work that goes into collecting and archiving important writing and interviews and Tim has done an amazing job here.Just as with MM during its time as a printed zine, this collection is diverse, passionate, and interesting. It will help preserve this periods history on so many aspects of different sub-cultures - but all from a punk perspective. I always loved that Tim interviews bands that he liked and people that he found interesting or inspiring, rather than the suggestions of publicists. I think that's what made MM retain its authenticity as it grew - that it wasn't a vehicle for promoting the next hyped band, but more one man's passions and preferences. This led to questions that had depth and purpose, and far better interviews than in the average zine.The diversity of the bands and other individuals reflects Tim's loves, and this shines right through the pages. As both a writer, and someone working at record labels for years (Revelation Records for 20 years and now Pirates Press Records for almost two) I understand the difficulty in reaching this balance. I think it's crucial for a zine (or a website) to retain this integrity and it's something Tim's always managed to do. Our history, our thoughts and emotions, and our collective punk scene must be archived in this way or it will be lost. Through this kind of dedication, hard work, and follow through, Tim is once more illustrating how the punk scene, especially in the UK, would have been far less rich and wonderful if Mass Movement had not been one of its cornerstones. And as it continues to be so, whilst Tim diversifies all the more with his writing, we take our hats off to him for putting together this collection for us all to either read for the first time, or take a lovely trip down memory lane.
