Documenting arch-conceptualist Mel Bochner's fusion of architecture and quantificationProduced in honor of the 50th anniversary of his first Measurement Room, Mel Bochner: Measurements (1968-1971) revisits this defining period early in the New York-based artist's renowned career. One of the most important conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s, Bochner (born 1940) applied various abstract systems in his artistic practice. Here, measurements--a numerical means of ordering the world--highlight the interplay of architecture and the viewer's relationship to it. Subverting a simple yet meticulous procedure by rendering it as aesthetics, the work challenges conventional understandings of dimensions in space and by consequence one's place in the world. Here, preparatory drawings, poetic artist's notes and archival photographs of the first Measurement Rooms reveal Bochner's thinking and process beyond this pivotal series while a contemporaneous interview with Elayne Varian and an essay by Dia curator Alexis Lowry add essential context.

Particulates is a new book of science fiction initiated by Rita McBride and edited by Nalo Hopkinson. The publication follows the spirit of McBride's Ways series and features 16 texts that are inspired by her 2017-18 laser installation Particulates at Dia: Chelsea in New York. Drawing on her longstanding interest in speculative thinking, the artist saw this exploration through science fiction and fantasy as a natural component of the installation itself. Contributors include Gina Ashcraft, Elizabeth Bear, Samuel Delany, Minister Faust, Nicola Griffith, Nalo Hopkinson, Kameron Hurley, Victor LaValle, Karen Lord, Ken MacLeod, Annalee Newitz, Daniel Jose Older, Sofia Samatar, Vandana Singh and Mark von Schlegell.

In the late 1960s, while still a recent graduate with scant means, artist Bruce Nauman (born 1941) explored a trio of interwoven subjects: the studio, the daily practice of making art and the role of the artist. He outlined the latter, for example, in a memorable neon sign, alongside more commercial counterparts affixed to the exterior of his building. The work's cool spiral letters traced the claim, at once ironic and heartfelt: "The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths." Questioning the role of the spectator and channeling Nauman's inquisitive attitude, this book features contributions by Judith Barry, William Kentridge, David Levine, Gedi Sibony, Gary Simmons, Charline von Heyl and Mark Wallinger.

Artists on Hanne Darboven is the first installment in a series culled from Dia Art Foundation's Artists on Artists lectures, focused on German conceptual artist Hanne Darboven (1941-2009). Established in 2001, the lecture series highlights the work of modern and contemporary artists from the perspective of their colleagues and peers. The inaugural Artists on Artists title is published in conjunction with the opening of Darboven's 1980-83 installation "Kulturgeschichte 1880-1983" ("Cultural History 1880-1983") at Dia: Chelsea in New York City, the first time Darboven's magnum opus has been on view in the United States for over a decade. It features contributions from Gregg Bordowitz, Sam Lewitt, Josephine Meckseper and Matt Mullican.

Finally Available Since 1992, Dia has presented the Robert Lehman Lectures on Contemporary Art. Like the Foundation's "Discussions in Contemporary Culture" symposia series, the Lehman lectures are an example of Dia's ongoing commitment to cross-disciplinary critical and intellectual discourse. The long-term, often site-specific, exhibitions at Dia offer a fertile space for discussion. Edited by Lynne Cooke and Karen Kelly, together with Bettina Funcke, this second volume of collected theoretical and critical essays are by a multidisciplinary group of lecturers, and are focused on the exhibitions mounted at Dia from 1995 through 1998. Nine diverse contributors range in scope from art historian David Sylvester and philosopher Sarat Maharaj to architectural theoretician Beatriz Colomina, from philosopher Mark Taylor to fiction writer and cultural critic Marina Warner. These writers, among others, take on the challenges of illuminating, analyzing, and exploring the work of a disparate group of internationally recognized artists, including Alighiero e Boetti, Jessica Stockholder, Gerhard Richter, Juan Muñoz, Fred Sandback and Andy Warhol. Together, the essays in this book present a broad-based account of contemporary artistic practice, criticism, scholarship and theory.

This third volume of collected theoretical and critical essays focuses on Dia's exhibitions from 1998 through 2000. As in the first two volumes, nine diverse contributors are included, ranging from art historian Jonathan Crary and philosopher Boris Groys to film theoretician Peter Wollen, from curator Russell Ferguson to cultural critic Elaine Showalter. These writers, among others, take on the challenges of illuminating, analyzing, and exploring the work of a disparate group of internationally recognized artists, including Joseph Beuys, Stan Douglas, Douglas Gordon, Rodney Graham, Bruce Nauman and Andy Warhol. Together, the essays in this book present a broad-based account of contemporary artistic practice, criticism, scholarship and theory.

An imaginative meeting of abstract painting and personalized iconography, Alfred Jensen's vivid paintings open unexpected correspondances and act as a key locus for examining diverse questions about the legacy of abstract expressionism and the origins of conceptual practice. Concordance includes many rarely seen works from the artist's estate as well as a late 12-panel work, The Great Pyramid, executed in 1979 and never before published.

This catalogue documents artist Jessica Stockholder's site-specific installation at the DIA Center for the Arts. Incorporating multifarious materials and textures, the installation transformed the 4000-square feet of the museum's ground floor gallery, constituting one of Stockholder's most impressive projects. Since the late 80s Stockholder has made a variety of site-specific installations which incorporate painting and sculpture and suggest architectural forms. She employs a diverse palette of found objects -- from plastic stacking crates, to carpets, to balls of brilliantly colored yarn -- in the weaving of complex structures in which objects and materials, color, texture, form, and space play off each other to memorable effect. This eye-popping and playful book also features two perceptive essays as well as a short piece by eminent avant-garde poet Ann Lauterbach.
