René Descartes (1596 - 1650) elucidated the idea of a separation between the objective reality and the subjective reality, or, in other words, between the exterior world and the interior world. The pre-Cartesian philosophy and literature did not show much interest in this separation between interior and exterior, or between subjective and objective.For example, Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC) gives the impression to see a harmony between the exterior objects (real forms), feelings and rational thinking (potential form). How fresh, oh Lord, how sweet and clean are these poems! And what nice and historic photographs, from three continents (America, Europe and Asia), and spanning from this year to over 75 years ago!Ana Dediu (1912 - 2010) was a professor of history, but worked in many different areas, and was very lyrically inclined, navigating that unusual intersection of artless business and very suave poetry. She had a distinctive ability to conceptualize the world around her, and to communicate it, through charming poems, to all of us. Virgil Dediu (1912 - 1986), her husband, an electrical engineer, helped immensely in creating a solid and prosperous family. His example inspired my aphorism: opportunities are anytime and anywhere, but only those who are looking for them and take them first, will harvest the rewards.The efforts of Ana Dediu's daughter-in-law, Sophia Dediu, to prepare this book and to translate the poems, are truly magnificent.What luxurious simplicity and infinite joy to read this fascinating book!

Well, suddenly and unexpectedly, to put it mildly, fifty years just passed, and we had our 50th Wedding Anniversary! What a great surprise for my wife Sophia and for me! Lutetia Parisiorum (around 250 BC) is the original Roman name, in Latin, of Paris, and it is mentioned by Julius Caesar (100 BC - 44 BC). Roman Lutetia was initially located on the left bank of the Seine, in the place now called Latin Quarter, with the center close to the present Sorbonne University. Some northern suburbs of Lutetia were on the Île de la Cité, which became the modern center of Paris. Rome exists for over 2,500 glorious years, and the ancient Romans built massive concrete structures that have withstood the elements for more than 2,000 years. Recently specialists analyzed samples from a Roman breakwater that has been submerged in the Bay of Napoli (Naples) for over two millennia, and they observed the technique of crystal chemistry that allowed Roman seawater concrete to resist chemical attack and wave action for all this time.
