Yet Steve Burt's alluring treatment of these first lesson texts will stimulate the desire to proclaim the captivating tales drawn from these Old Testament lessons. In many ways it is easier for the contemporary hearer to identify with these Old Testament characters. They are less perfect, approachable, very human in their faith struggles and in many respects much like us.Titles include:• What Do You Do When Life Ain't Fair? (Genesis 29:15-28)• The Face of God (Genesis 32:22-31)• Need Help Removing that Roadblock? (Exodus 14:19-31)• But You Can't Get Water Out of a Rock! (Exodus 17:1-7)Steven Burt is a nationally known small church consultant, author, and lecturer. He has taught preaching, writing, and small church dynamics, and formerly directed the Missouri School of Religion's Small Church Program. There aren't any mentions of bamboo in any of the Gospel stories, is there?Richard Gribble, CSC uses this unlikely image and many others to help the reader and Bible student discern more about what it means to follow Christ throughout Lent in preparation for the glorious celebration of Easter. The story of Bamboo in the Garden is a good illustration ofwhat the call of the Master, Jesus Christ, may entail and howmuch might be asked of us.Though we face struggle and even death, the promise of the Lenten season is new life and a return to the home where we truly belong. Each lesson in Walking the Journey of Lent: Reflections on the Scriptures for Cycle C is bolstered by opening and closing prayers, contextual scripture and discussion questions.Lessons Include: "Emptying Yourself Before the Lord" for Ash Wednesday "The Journey of Reconciliation" for Lent 4 "God Restores Us to Life" for Easter"What I find most valuable is Fr. Gribble's ability to find contemporary books or figures or situations that make his reflections quite concrete and easy to understand. It is an enviable gift for a homilist." - Fr. Bill Williams, Pastor of St. Peter Parish, Plymouth, MA"Through his use of real-life stories, engaging reflections, thought-provoking discussion questions, and opening and concluding prayers for each week, Fr. Gribble leads us to the conclusion of Lent where Jesus unchains us from the bondage of sin and we find theglory to which suffering leads us. Fr. Gribble's booklet will enhance the Lenten spiritual journeyof anyone seeking healing and new life in the risen Christ." - Fr. Jim Fenstermaker, C.S.C., Pastor of Holy Cross Parish, Easton, MA"If you are looking to deepen your relationship with the Lord this Lent, look no further. George Anderson, former presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), speaks to the makeover approach to ministry that evolved during the course of more than nine years at a small, struggling congregation in Janesville, Iowa called Messiah Lutheran Church. When Pastor Beth Olson arrived, members told her they weren't sure from week to week if they would see each other in worship or if the church would even be open the following Sunday. How did that same congregation, then, end up building the first new church and education unit in the Northwest Iowa Synod? How did it come to host an ELCA Division for Outreach regional workshop on ministry in action? How did this congregation, which had looked death in the eye, experience a resurrection few might have expected? The answers are in Becoming a Makeover Congregation, a story that shows how things as diverse as glow sticks for Christmas Eve worship, jumper cables as an image for transformational ministry and a makeover scene from the Disney movie The Princess Diaries can bring about resurrection and renewal. Pastor Olson's story will equip you to assemble your own makeover for mission and ministry toolkit so you too can celebrate the power of resurrection in your church.Chapter titles include: Chapter 2: Iowa Skepticism Meets Iowa Determination Chapter 4: Worship, Welcome and a Relaxed Fit Chapter 7: Outside the Comfort Zone: Stewardship and Other Lessons Chapter 11: The Makeover Tool Chest Pastor Beth Olson is the pastor of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, where she has served since 2011. She earned her M.Div. in theology/theological studies from Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1992. She has published articles about including children in worship in the Augsburg Fortress worship resource book Sundays and Seasons 2009, and written prayers for Bread for the Day 2007, 2008 and 2009, a daily devotional book also published by Augsburg Fortress. Her poetry was published in the 64th edition of Lyrical Iowa (2009). She and her family live in Waverly, Iowa.

198,95 kr. What has happened to love? 1 Corinthians 13 tells us: "Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way … Love never ends … And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love (NRSV)." Do we see that in American culture today? More often, we see anger, vitriol, even hatred between opposing parties, often across political lines. But in St. Paul's wonderful love poem in 1 Corinthians 13, we find just the prescription an often loveless modern society needs, because Love - It's the Greatest! Full of wonderful true stories, examples from daily life, and thought-provoking questions, this book makes great sermon material, especially for weddings; devotional reading; or small group study for Christian seeking a better understanding of this much used but not fully comprehended concept of love. Dr. John H. Krahn has served as a pastor for nearly 50 years and has married nearly a thousand couples. This is his eighth book. He is also a much sought after speaker.

198,95 kr. The moving accounts of Jesus? power to cast out demons and heal physical ailments are compelling preaching texts ? but they also present a tangle of problems. This book helps you negotiate a homiletic minefield with a detailed exploration of eleven miracle narratives appearing in Cycle B. It's packed with stimulating ideas and illustrations for developing dynamic sermons, including a chapter with numerous examples of contemporary miracles and healings. ?This is an admirable example of pastoral theology at its best. Aaron's discussions of the historical background and theological significance of each text are thoroughly informed and articulate. Equally helpful are the insights he brings to the understanding of the pastoral implications of each text and the strategies appropriate to preaching the text.? ? David Bartlett, Yale Divinity School
