Pop Pop is one of five novels John has written. This is a wonderful story about a ten-year old boy who loved to go fishing with his dad. The boy's name was Timmy. On several occasions a huge fish would break his line. While his dad was at work, Timmy decided to use his mom's old clothes line thinking the big fish could not break it. Putting a big hook and heavy sinker on the line, he went down the pier on his own. The big fish was waiting to be fed and gobbled up Timmy's big worm and the fight was on. Timmy weighed 60 pounds and the big fish about the same. He prayed that God would give him the strength to lift the fish over the pier railing. A TV camera close by heard the commotion and filmed this little 10-year-old boy pulling the fish in while his hands were blistering and bleeding. This made headline news which Timmy's dad heard about and he headed home to see the big fish. As he prepared to filet the fish a miraculous transformation took place. The TV cameras were still rolling and the fish screamed. Human arms and legs popped out of him and he ran into the family swimming pool at which time his arms and legs went back into his body. He out-flipped Flipper and did put on a performance the likes of which had never been seen. News quickly reached the White House and the creature was taken there for examination. The creature is called Pop Pop and does miraculous things. The ending is sure to tug at your heart.

This entertaining collection of stories revolves around themes of love and arts, including painting, writing, history, mythology, and conversation, along with reflections on chess, cuisine, confectionary, travel, and literature, all set at the turn of the 21st century, before the rising of social media and the ubiquity of internet culture. A more innocent time, perhaps. Though the stories are related and certain echoes among them, with one exception the characters inhabit separate narratives. The longest piece, essentially a novella, tells the story of a couple honeymooning in Italy, who come across a manuscript that's purported to be a personal diary of Francesco del Giocondo, a husband of Lisa del Giocondo, the reputed model for the portrait known as the Mona Lisa. Does this prove Mona Lisa's real identity? Is the manuscript the find of a lifetime, or just another con job inflicted upon a hapless tourist? The story, which alternates between the text of the diary and events of the honeymoon, raises questions about identities not just historical but also personal for the newlyweds in Italy. Like the other stories, this novella challenges character's beliefs about the nature of art and their relationships.
