ENG: Taiwan's Buddhist nuns are as unique as they are noteworthy. Boasting the greatest number of Buddhist nuns of any country, Taiwan has a much greater number of nuns than monks. These women are well known and well regarded as dharma teachers and for the social service work that has made them a central part of Taiwan's civil society. In this, the first English-language book on Taiwanese women and Buddhism, author Elise Ann DeVido introduces readers to Taiwan's Buddhist nuns, but also looks at the larger question of how Taiwan's Buddhism shapes and is shaped by women--mainly nuns but also laywomen, who like their clerical sisters flourish in that country.RUS: На острове Тайвань проживает самое большое количество буддийских монахинь в мире. Эти женщины хорошо известны и почитаемы как религиозные наставницы, а также благодаря социальной работе, позволившей им стать ядром тайваньского гражданского общества. В этой книге Элиза де Видо знакомит читателей с буддийскими монахинями Тайваня и рассматривает вопрос о том, как буддизм Тайваня формируется женщинами -- как монахинями, так и мирянками.

  • - Contagion in Premodern Islamic and Christian Thought in the Western Mediterranean
    af Justin K Stearns

ENGHow did pre-modern scholars conceive of contagion and the transmissibility of disease in general? Infectious Ideas answers this question by looking carefully at both Muslim and Christian scholarship in Medieval and Early Modern Iberia and North Africa. Recent scholarship has focused extensively on how the laboratory revolution of the nineteenth century changed the understanding of disease in Western Europe. I argue that many previous discussions of both pre-modern conceptions of contagion and disease have been distorted by anachronistic pre-conceptions rooted in the nineteenth century science of bacteriology. In order to truly understand the nature of contagion and contagious diseases in the scholarship of Muslims and Christians in Medieval Iberia, we need to explore the discourses that defined and debated the nature of contagion.RUSКак религиозные общины реагировали на эпидемические заболевания и осмысляли их?

  • - War, Trade, and Settlement in the Seventeenth-Century Atlantic World
    af Wim Klooster
    544,95 kr.

ENGIn the seventeenth century, the Dutch built an Atlantic empire that stretched from the Caribbean to the African Gold Coast and from present-day New York to Brazil. This empire was forged on the battlefields and the high seas, as Dutch armies and fleets extended the decades-old independence war against Spain across the ocean. Dutch transatlantic fleets, armies, and colonies included numerous foreigners, largely drawn from countries in northwestern Europe. Nor would the Dutch have been able to achieve military victories without the native alliances they carefully cultivated. Indeed, the Dutch Atlantic was quintessentially inter-imperial, multinational, and multiracial. At the same time, it was an empire designed to benefit the Dutch Republic.RUSВ XVII веке голландцы построили атлантическую империю, которая простиралась от Карибского моря до африканского Золотого Берега и от нынешнего Нью-Йорка до Бразилии.

ENGThis book emphasizes the centrality of nationhood to Thomas Jefferson's thought and politics, envisioning Jefferson as a cultural nationalist whose political project sought the alignment of the American state system with the will and character of the nation. He appears in the book as the essential narrator of what he once called the "American Story" as the historian, the sociologist, and the ethnographer; the political theorist of the nation; the most successful practitioner of its politics; and its most enthusiastic champion.RUSВ своей книге Брайан Стил подчеркивает центральную роль понятия «нация» в идеях и политике Томаса Джефферсона.

ENG: This book charts how the cartographies of American literature as an institutional category have varied radically across different times and places. Arguing that American literature was consolidated as a distinctively nationalist entity only in the wake of the U.S. Civil War, Paul Giles identifies this formation as extending until the beginning of the Reagan presidency in 1981. He contrasts this with the more amorphous boundaries of American culture in the eighteenth century, and with ways in which conditions of globalization at the turn of the twenty-first century have reconfigured the parameters of the subject.RUS: В книге Пола Джайлза показано, как радикально менялась картография американской литературы в разные эпохи и в разных местах Утверждая, что американская литература сформировалась только после Гражданской войны в США, Джайлз демонстрирует, что это формирование продолжалось вплоть до начала президентства Рейгана в 1981 году.

  • - Dostoevsky's Economy of Salvation and Antisemitism
    af Susan McReynolds
    366,95 kr.

ENGDostoevsky's Russian chauvinism and anti Semitism have long posed problems for his readers and critics. How could the author of The Brothers Karamazov also be the source of the slurs against Jews in Diary of a Writer? And where is the celebrated Christian humanist in the nationalist outbursts of The Idiot? These enigmas-the coexistence of humanism and hatred, faith and doubt-are linked, Susan McReynolds tells us in Redemption and the Merchant God. Her book analyzes Dostoevsky's novels and Diary to show how the author's anxieties about Christianity can help solve the riddle of his anti Semitism as well as that of his Russian messianism.RUSНационалистические и антисемитские воззрения Достоевского долгое время создавали проблемы для его читателей и критиков.

ENGDrawing on a decade of experience leading and teaching in college environmental studies programs, Sarah Jaquette Ray has created an "existential tool kit" for the climate generation. Combining insights from psychology, sociology, social movements, mindfulness, and the environmental humanities, Ray explains why and how we need to let go of eco-guilt, resist burnout, and cultivate resilience while advocating for climate justice. A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety is the essential guidebook for the climate generation--and perhaps the rest of us--as we confront the greatest environmental threat of our time.RUSОпираясь на десятилетний опыт руководства и преподавания программ по изучению окружающей среды, Сара Джэкетт Рэй создала «экзистенциальный набор инструментов» для поколения, озабоченного будущим нашей планеты Объединив знания из области психологии, социологии и экологических гуманитарных наук, Рэй объясняет, почему и как нам необходимо избавиться от чувства экологической вины и как противостоять выгоранию в нелегкой борьбе за климатическую справедливость.

  • - Anthropologist, Russian Socialist, Jewish Activist
    af Sergei Kan

ENGThis intellectual biography of Lev Shternberg (1861-1927) illuminates the development of professional anthropology in late imperial and early Soviet Russia. Shortly after the formation of the Soviet Union the government initiated a detailed ethnographic survey of the country's peoples. Lev Shternberg, who as a political exile during the late tsarist period had conducted ethnographic research in northeastern Siberia, was one of the anthropologists who directed this survey and consequently played a major role in influencing the professionalization of anthropology in the Soviet Union. But Shternberg was much more than a government anthropologist. Under the new regime he continued his work as the senior curator of the St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, which began in the early 1900s. In the last decade of his life Shternberg also played a leading role in establishing a new Soviet school of cultural anthropology and in training a cohort of professional anthropologists. True to the ideals of his youth, he also continued an active involvement in the intellectual life of the Jewish community, even though the new regime was making it increasingly difficult. This in-depth biography explores the scholarly and political aspects of Shternberg's life and how they influenced each other. It also places his career in both national and international perspectives, showing the context in which he lived and worked and revealing the important developments in Russian anthropology during these tumultuous years.RUSИнтеллектуальная биография Льва Николаевича Штернберга (1861-1927) освещает развитие антропологии в позднеимперской и раннесоветской России.

ENThis three-volume book investigates the Russian transformations of one of the central concepts of Greek Christology, the self-humiliation or kenosis of Christ. The author applies rhetoric (paradox, metaphor, metonymy) as a means to elucidate mechanisms of theological persuasion and to trace the representations of the humiliated Christ and his imitations in various media from liturgy and iconology to everyday practice and literary fiction. The exploration of post-Christian literature of the 19th and 20th century (N. Chernyshevskii, M. Gor'kii, N. Ostrovskii, Ven. Erofeev, Vl. Sorokin) demonstrates the existence of a kenotic Christology after Christianity.RUThis three-volume book investigates the Russian transformations of one of the central concepts of Greek Christology, the self-humiliation or kenosis of Christ. This book looks at the history of work and the meanings that are attached to it over time. Taking as its basis a number of international surveys and interviews conducted in Europe, the authors consider. The significance of work for Europeans today.Over the years the meaning of work has changed. It has become more highly diversified, and it is today invested with high expectations that conflict with organizational developments and the changing nature of the labour market. The authors use a generational perspective to explore whether it is possible to reconcile the contemporary "ethos" of work, especially with regards to women and young people, with organizations that are increasingly under pressure to be profitable and productive.Reinventing Work in Europe will be of interest to scholars and students in the areas of sociology of work, employment and organizations, labour studies, digital economy and political economy.

This book is the first biography of Nina Berberova. Based on years of archival research, the author deciphers many of the conspicuous omissions ("умолчания," as Berberova herself put it) which have intrigued generations of readers of Berberova's autobiography The Italics are Mine. A special focus is given to the four decades Berberova lived in the US, which were left out of her book, and which ended up being extremely productive for her both personally and professionally.
